This was the Minty goal, but just watch Mac on this shift...

Mac putting in lots of little things together, including gaining possession after losing the faceoffs.

I want to point out how important LaCombe was on this shift as well. Mac got thrown down near the blueline, but kept the puck on-side. If LaCombe, his speed, and IQ to circle back/support was not there to quickly snag the puck, then it's a 2 v 0 breakaway for the Canes. Also, LaCombe doesn't stop skating at the blueline. He saw the forward covering Strome still at the blueline with Strome already deep in the OZ, which means it's a 3v2 situation if LaCombe keeps driving.

Can you imagine a couple more years from now when Mac fills out completely? He won't get shoved around as much! Well, that's my hope.

I don’t do twitter or other social media. But I got plenty tired of reading Stephens’ mailbags where all he wanted to do was talk food and music. He works for The NY Times now, surely they can find him a suitable gig where he’ll be happier and more enthused about what he writes.
I read every one of his mailbags on The Athletic and only remember him talking about food and music occasionally. I enjoyed his mailbags for the most part.

The thing about them that slightly irritated me was that he never seemed to have an insider perspective to share. Whether that was the Ducks being tight-lipped about everything or Stephens being too polite to really dig in and get some sources, I don't know. But while I appreciated his insights and perspective as a hockey writer, I was always left a little bit wanting by the lack of an insider perspective.

This was a fantastic sequence by all the young players. I know that there are going to be plenty of mistakes on these sorts of plays that lead to fishing pucks out of our own net, but I can handle those if it leads to goals like this.

My how times are changing.. the ducks now have TWO(!) 'freelance' journalists covering them!

This guy Patrick has great analysis on his twitter threads.

I cancelled the Athletic because of Stephens and his pompus attitude during his Q and As. I don't know anyone on here that ever thought of him as some insider.

He's a beat writer, and was working at The Register long before he went to The Athletic. Most of those guys, in all sports, have sources or can share insight from organization members that they can mention casually but aren't allowed to quote directly. Stephens has seemed to do that less than most.

I also have no idea what pompous attitude you're referring to. Stephens has always come across as incredibly humble and grateful for his readership. The guy used to personally respond with a thank you to every comment that praised his writing. Whether that's just an online persona, I don't know. I've never met him in real life, although various commenters who have met him have had great things to say about their interaction. Either way, I have never see any pomposity.

Huge kudos to Mac on all his hard work that shift but it probably should be noted that if he falls slightly different then it’s a breakaway for the canes at their blue line. He got a smidge lucky in that way I’d say

A potential 2 v 0 breakaway. The forward attached to Strome was playing up high and ready to engage Mac before Mac fell. I noted this two posts above you.

I get the legitimate criticism of Stephens like he's late to the party on breaking news about the Ducks, or that he started covering the Kings in addition to the Ducks and it cut down on the number of Ducks articles he puts out... but some people really, really like to disparage him at every opportunity which smells funny to me and I'll leave it at that.

McT leading all Ducks in FO's so far (total and percentage), he improved considerably at the dot from the last season, it's plain to see.

If the improvement is not plain to see...

McTavish
  • 2022-23
    • Games: 80 games
    • FO: 725 attempts
    • FOW: 307
    • FOW %: 42.3%

  • 2023-24
    • Games: 6 games
    • FO: 82 attempts
    • FOW: 44
    • FOW %: 53.7%

The sample is still small, but it's still nice seeing improvement. Let's hope Mac can keep it up. Looks like the off-season workout is helping.

Just me or is he getting thrown out of the face-off circle a lot?
He definitely has been and he yaps to the linesman afterwards. To this day, the best fo approach I’ve seen. Is when Kesler would get frustrated he would just slam his stick on the ice kind of in a “ ok let’s go” type of tone. These linesman are so insecure you can’t say shit to them

IDK I prefer Vermette's strategy of hitting the linesman

Agree future captain choice is becoming clear. Hes the one who leads by example in all facets of the game, excelling under this coaching staff

Mac was gonna excel regardless who coaches because it was an expected jump in development from his rookie season, especially with a normal summer off. I've been saying his ceiling is unknown when we drafted him as his skills improved vastly in this D+0 season. Also, he is a different type of forward compared to the recent forwards Murray had drafted b/c Mac drives the bus.

I will have to also praise both Vatrano and Strome for putting in work this past summer b/c their defensive play last year left much to be desired.

Cronin gets praise for honing in on details, but Verbeek gets lots of praise b/c we have been without two top-6F (Killorn and Carlsson) as well as top pairing D (Drysdale). We have a lot of talent and talent depth on this team this year. Our defense folded like a cheap tent when we lost Drysdale last year.
