He did throw a hit last night, which was a nice change. He does still get outmuscled a lot though.

Do you think it's outmuscled? I see it more as being outskated, losing position and thus the battle. I think he still needs to improve his quickness, but I could be looking at it the wrong way.

I don't think he's a Kesler type, Kesler was physical, in your face and downright mean sometimes. Mac has not shown that at any level.

I see that too. But I also see him being bent back at the waist when trying to bump guys.

Not to get too far off topic, but if McTavish became close to prime Kesler then that would be a HUGE win.

Kelser's peak was insane. A 20 minute a night, 57% faceoff, physical, shut down center, that just happened to score 40+ goals and 73 points. All while playing against the other team's #1 line and taking just about every PK and defensive zone faceoff, literally every game.

And he didn't decline for no reason. In 11-12 he started getting injured and that trend basically stayed the rest of his career.

Anyways, I love Kesler. Back on topic.

Mac's still got a ways to go to build his body. He's 20 years old trying to play that physical game. I'm ecstatic at the progress between last year and this year. Last year, he looked timid to engage a more physical game along with being more passive with shooting the puck more. I got used to him abusing everyone in juniors. Maybe he was overwhelmed as a 19-year old in the NHL as well as being shifted around from 2LW to 4C to 3C and eventually sticking in the top-6C.

We're gonna need that physicality, even if he does get outmuscled, in the 3rd period to weather the storm that HC Cronin expects when holding a lead.

If Mac keeps adding more strength as well as improve his burst skating, we'll hopefully be in delight in the near future. Just stay away from stretching for pucks in the off-season.

I don’t see them as similar players at all. McTavish isn’t poor defensively but he’s not going to be in Selke conversations like Kesler was.

And I think it’s very possible that McTavish has some 40+40 seasons in him or possibly even higher

Agreed with not seeing the similarities in Mac and Kesler. I think Matty Beniers is more like Kesler due to his speed and shutdown qualities. Mac is more of an offensive weapon.

I still think Mac's closest comparable is Pavelski. Low-end 1C/high-end 2C who perennially hangs around 70-80 points in the regular season and hits another gear once the playoffs start and the intensity ramps up.

If thinks work out well, or come close to these players potential, Could have three 1C's on hand. That is a very good problem to have.

This was the Minty goal, but just watch Mac on this shift...

What I love about that play is McTavish's awareness of the blueline and LaCombe's ability to puck handle just enough to make the pass to Strome without bringing it offside.

99% of the time you see guys just bring it over the blueline and it completely deflates all the offensive momentum. Fowler is probably the most egregious at that and it bugs the shit out of me every time he does it - especially on the power play.

With McTavish, the only real similarities I see to Kesler are the fact that they're two-way second line centers and it pretty much ends there.

Stephens reads HF for takes confirmed. Multiple posters, including myself, have said he gives off ROR vibes.

Stephens has been mailing it in for quite a while now. Hockey ranks third for him behind food and music.

Love to see Derek Lee get more exposure. He’s got the enthusiasm Stephens lost years ago.
wish i could both like and laugh this post haha.

Also, love how Derek is posting full-length post-game media availabilities from Cronin. Stephens could've done that for years, but of course he wouldn't have taken that step haha.

I've never been on Twitter, so I can't comment on his activity there. The only Tweets I see are the ones posted on Ducks message boards.

But his passion for Ducks hockey seemed to be roughly as good as it ever was up until The Athletic forced him to split his time a few years ago between the Ducks and Kings. Not only was he not able to be around the Ducks as much, but I got the sense The Athletic emphasized that the Kings were in the bigger market and deserved more attention. I interacted with him a few times through his mailbags and comment sections over there, and he seemed to want to do more Ducks stuff but didn't have the capacity.

Understandably, there also hasn't been as much exciting stuff to cover with the Ducks the last six years since they've been a flaming garbage heap on the ice.

Maybe he can concentrate on his actual profession now that the Dodger season is over.

I don’t do twitter or other social media. But I got plenty tired of reading Stephens’ mailbags where all he wanted to do was talk food and music. He works for The NY Times now, surely they can find him a suitable gig where he’ll be happier and more enthused about what he writes.

McTavish is like a strategic player who's doing all the right things at the perfect time, just seems to have a huge plan instead just skill. Guys like leadership vibes like he's Jon Snow with a plan on how to win.
