I don't see a lot of people who were advocating for giving into his contract demands.

Which is relevant how? Concerning the specific poster I quoted, who definitely would have given Callahan the moon, it's more than hypocritical to take a shot at MSL for wanting to "retire" in New York when Callahan wanted the exact same thing.

If the person posting that wasn't Callahan's biggest fan, you might have a point.

I understand the anger here, but to me this is just sad. It's insane to me that MSL hasn't just been ok, he's been downright terrible. It should be shocking to see a player of his calibre struggle so much but we're so used to seeing it as fans of this team that it's not a surprise at all.

I actually had high hopes for this team when things started clicking late in the season, but I guess that was just a mirage. These guys are severely outclassed by the Pens right now, and MSL looks finished. Sucks for us.

MSL was not the right player to bring in. His roots are elsewhere. Callahan meant more to this team then MSL regardless of the talent level.

They should have pursued a player that they could grow with even if he wasnt as talented.

I would not keep MSL

Who said would give him the moon, 7 Million is way too much for someone like him, but 6 Million I think people are getting a little worked up over. Can argue this till we are both blue in the face, but a lot of teams want him, Rangers wanted to keep him but the business part of things took over here. This trade actually increased his value.

Don't take it out on me just because things are not working out for the Rangers. I was against this trade not because it involved my favorite player, but it put pressure on the Rangers to win now. Also hurting their future by giving up picks.

MSL wanted to come to the Rangers, he really did not know what he was getting himself into. Rabid fans, aggressive media, and an arena of fans who will tell you how they really feel.

How is pointing out that you are a hypocrite and notorious Callahan fanboy taking anything out on you?

LOL @ MSL didn't know what he was getting himself in to.

I liked the trade at the time but it's become an unmitigated disaster. This city does awful things to veterans. Would rather have kept the draft pick, kept Callahan, and let him walk if he didn't come down on his demands (because yes, 6x36 is too much, NTC or not).

So where are all the old man backers now. Sure lets give a 2014 1st or 2nd and that prized 2015 first pick away for this old man. I don't even care about what Cally wanted. The right play was to trade Cally away for a couple of draft picks and be done with it. Giving away some possible future players in draft picks for this old man was beyond me and I can not understand how anyone could defend it. This team was nowhere close to winning the Cup this season, even if they had a little hot streak, and to think they had a chance and to mortgage to future on a pipe dream is why this franchise will be a bubble playoff team every year.

I'd really like to hear from all those who defended the trade at that time, and then while St Louis was floundering during the regular season told us St Louis is still breaking in and will take us to a new level in the playoffs.

I'd like to read one post from you that isn't reactionary, irrational and based solely in hindsight.

Yeah, because when I went into the St Louis thread right after the trade and voiced my displeasure, that was based solely in hindsight. :shakehead

My goodness what a reactionary and irrational statement by you.

Oh, and...address the post, not the poster.

The wonderful thing about your "wait and see" approach is that it can be recycled forever.

Actually it's the harder position to take because we do have to wait and see before all of the games are played and the results lie before us without relying on speculation, trends and history. No it cannot be recycled forever because eventually June 2015 will arrive and we will know rather certainly whether or not the acqusition of MSL for the pricetag was indeed worth it. If MSL was set to be a free agent this year we would be very close to eating crow right now, but unfortunately for everyone involved we have another year of this soap opera before the final decisions can be made without overreactions.

It's easy to just come here on a game to game or series to series basis and start reacting to the current wave of emotions.

Funny reading some of the St Louis backers quotes. "The Rangers Offense will be light years better", "you only have a chance to acquire a player like this once in a generation" (yes last time was when we got Marcel Dionne). "He will further improve our PP".

Okay.

He was the best forward in the first round not named Dom Moore.

He looks like complete trash in the 2nd round, just like every other roster player on the team.

We get it. You didn't like the trade then, you don't like it now, you won't like it in June 2015 and you won't like it in June 2020, or June 2025.. Looking forward to hearing about it until this forum shuts down.

Yeah how stupid are people for predicting things that, given the stats from the rest of a player's career, would suggest are likely or at the very least probable.

I think the thing that bothers me most is Sather doing the same thing over and over and over and over again and expecting different results. The definition of insanity.

So can the "woe is me, every move is horrendous unless it ends up building a cup winner" approach.

When Sather constantly mortgages the future with moves that do not even come close to building a cup winner - it is painful.
