Callahan is due his money, he did not make a lot in the first few seasons playing here. A guy who scores around 50 points, is a two way shut down forward, special teams specialist, is certainly worth around 5.5 to 6 Million, imo. This guy bled for this team, became the captain, worked hard every night even with injuries, and he gets thrown out for an aging elite forward who did not want to play for his GM anymore, come on now.

No one cares, Callahan is not worth 6 million a year...In fact he wanted 7 million

From the beginning that trade never made sense. Anyone who thought this team was a 39 year old 5'8" player away from the cup were delusional. Just a vicious cycle of being so short sighted. We should have just traded cally for a second round pick and be done with it or just keep him and lose him in off season for nothing . Don't trade away two valuable high picks you moron ugh. Fk this I'm done

That is how the negotiations started, in the end it was job security that Sather did not want to give him. was not the money.

Yea, okay, Callahan wasn't worth what he was asking. The mistake was trading him AND a first round pick for St. Louis. I'd much rather have had traded him to San Jose for whatever they were offering or just letting him walk. Sather does it again.

He was that. He is not anymore. Why would I want to pay a guy 6M/year for 5+ years as a thank you for what he did in the past when he is not that player now?

The only thing that I can say about this trade at the moment is that when Tikkanen was originally traded to the Rangers at the trade deadline and I'm thinking that was the the 92-93 season when we missed the playoffs--he was horrible. But the next year he was an integral part of our Stanley Cup winning team. Maybe the same thing with St. Louis. Right now he looks almost like a lost soul.

God I hope so. At least with MSL, I have some faith in him to turn it around next season because he's performed in the playoffs before.

Nash on the other hand...he's never done it, he's currently failing miserably in the playoffs, and I don't see why anyone would believe that he'll turn things around in the future.

Seriously cannot believe how bad MSL has been. Where are those ripped calves? He's like a feather on the puck, and every pass he makes leads to a turnover, whether directly or indirectly. He can't pick corners, can't win puck battles, and he can't even handle the puck on the rush.

The Nash and MSL trades might set us back for a LONG time....hopefully we can find a way to ditch Nash, and somewhat make up for that lost '15 first rounder.

tikkanen was 38 when he got traded to the rangers?

Its appalling how bad St. Louis is right now.

Its not even lack of production, he almost looks like hes purposely sabotaging the Rangers.

When Crosby is 40 years old and about to retire, will he sign a 5 year 200 million dollar contract to play for the rangers? Then get bought out the second year?

This is a serious question

I know he's the most skilled player on the team and I'm not excusing him at all by saying this... but that describes every New York Ranger right now.

I'm not giving up on St. Louis. Part of that is simple pragmatism, along with my solid belief that his talent did not disappear.
That doesn't necessarily bode well for success, though. So much more has to happen with this team. How many years now have we wanted an in his prime true first line centre? Of course they are not easy to come by, or Sather would have purchased one by now.

If there is one singular iota of information out there that might disprove your theory, I will post it below....

....nope. Nothing.

So frustrating that this guy is a PPG player and then gets traded here and isn't even half that during the same season. It doesn't make sense.

Taking these three posts together--I'll start with my own--just to make a disclaimer--this team doesn't have a Messier or a Leetch. McDonagh is a very fine d-man and the current defense corps is a very solid one IMO and Lundqvist is IMO a better goalie than Richter---it's just that even if St. Louis rebounds this team is average at the center position. I think that St. Louis might find his game again with the Rangers but that doesn't mean this team is winning a Stanley Cup anytime soon.

But to the last post--Tikkanen was a very good player--could put up some points. He was never really ever the go to guy on any team he was ever on. St. Louis has been.

I cannot think of worse comparison than the acquisition of Tikanen versus that of Martin St. Louis.

How does anybody really think that the two can be compared? Look at the teams they joined. Is anybody really comparing the powerhouse Rangers team of the early 90's to this era?
The roles they were to fill are completely different.

Except its nothing new. Every. Shortcut. Acquisition.

It would be odd if he did perform well. This organization will never learn. Next season Sather will try to find the missing element with another short cut fix.

Meanwhile MSL is like all the other UFA's with that retired mentality. Work ethic is gone. No sacrifice. No second gear. The ultimate slap in the face is the assets we used instead of the standard UFA contract. But at least he is redeeming himself by saving our conditional 1st with his no show performance.

I think the broader point was that we shouldn't give up on a player acquired midseason who struggles out of the gate, especially when his pedigree suggests that he is a much better player than we're seeing.

I'll be honest, it's getting really tough to stay patient with Marty and want to see him on our roster next season...

This.

How anyone can be surprised by this is honestly amazing. And a little scary.
