I'm not sure why these threads keep getting locked. He's a core player and a UFA at the end of the year, so of course we are gonna discuss him. It's also one of the most popular topics, which shows that people are interested in talking about him. If it's not your thing, you can always skip the thread, just like with any other.

To get things started, I have to say I liked Marner's recent interview. It felt down-to-earth, without any attitude or entitlement, just like any other player speaking. Nice job.

I wonder if he's starting to worry a bit that he's not a slam dunk to be resigned? Considering how badly he seems to want to stay here, that could certainly be the catalyst for an attitude adjustment.

If he can learn how to stop looking so unlikeable in interviews, maybe there's some hope that he can figure out how to be a factor in the biggest playoff games? I can't say I have a ton of optimism in this regard but I'm desperately looking for a reason to believe.

Tre was very vocal prior to signing Matthews and Nylander that the goal was to sign them no matter what.

He's said nothing like this about Marner, at all. It doesn't exactly disclose their plans for him but it definitely says something .

Say that is true who cares? Nobody's got a gun to your head forcing you to click and read these threads.
I've been on these boards for 17 years and never once wanted a thread closed. I just don't click on it. Are there post or thread limits?

If a thread keeps popping up, or it has many pages, it means people want to discuss it... on a discussion board. Funny how that works.

This is exactly it. I like Matthews, there's probably been 100000 threads on the main boards criticizing/trashing Matthews. There's no point going in there and demanding threads be closed. If I don't wanna read it, I just don't click on any of the threads.

Why does it all of a sudden become so different over here?

There will be no discussions allowed on a hockey discussion board. It’s somewhere in the fine print I think

I know nobody has a gun to my head, I just posed a possible answer to the OP's question. Why did it bother you?

That gives me some hope it's not a slam dunk. If it was up to me, I'd wait until the summer and see where we're at at that point and if Marner pulls yet another choke job in the playoffs, I would not resign him. Some are saying they'll sign him when he gets hot during the season at some point which to me is just stupid (if playoff success is the goal).

It’s because it’s pre season and there is no on ice game pressure on him. They woukd be doing him a huge favour if they kept him away from the Mike

There is no way they should sign Marne until after the playoffs. There is no risk, if he is a rockstar in the playoffs and the leaf go far just pay him. If I’d craps the bed again let him walk and move on with a retool

Might be reading too much into that tbh.

I honestly don’t think it says anytging significant either way. All this tells me is they just don’t want the Marner negotiations to be a public one this time around. I also think it’s a negotiation tactic to handle Ferris and put a little pressure on Marner’s camp to come in at a reasonable number if you want to be a leaf.

Well Lebrun had this to say in the Summer. Which somewhat contradicts what Marner has said about wanting to stay here:

Is It Time For the Maple Leafs to Move On From Mitch Marner?

Report: Preference From Mitch Marner's Camp to Start Season with Maple Leafs, John Tavares Doesn't Want to Go Anywhere
Marner and Tavares — UFA's on July 1, 2025 — can sign new extensions with the Maple Leafs this summer.
Nick BardenJun 4, 2024 7:00 AM EDT
If you're expecting the Maple Leafs to trade Mitch Marner this summer, it's possible that doesn't happen.

According to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, the 27-year-old — eligible to sign an extension with Toronto on July 1 — is electing to see what lies ahead rather than attempting to get a deal done this offseason. His camp also isn't putting together a trade list.

"As I wrote a few weeks ago, the Marner camp, led by agent Darren Ferris isn’t putting together a list of teams for a potential trade. The focus for Marner, who has a full no-move clause, is on honoring the remaining year of his contract and seeing where things go from there," LeBrun wrote.

"That also means I don’t think there’s an appetite to talk extension come July 1. The preference from the Marner camp is to start the season and see how things go. Perhaps there are talks on an extension eventually, but I don’t believe there’s a strong desire to get into them this summer."

It's easy, as long as it's happy thoughts only, no matter how stupid or false the narrative can be, the thread stays.

Once you try to counter what are clearly paid morons from his camp, the thread gets closed.

I mean, you had to start this thread by praising Mitch for not shitting a bed in an interview.

On the bright side, they can still ship him before the season starts!

The biggest concern for a player and players agent is that the market is dried up or unwilling to come close to his assumed 13m range type of ask.

Pretty hard to get the 13m you want when the best you can get on the market is about 10m. The playoff performances are not a secret anymore. It's out there and known and you can't put it back in the bottle.

Pretty easy stuff. Willy got underpaid last time and overpaid this time. You got overpaid last time so...

First off all, that’s an opinion piece. There’s no fact behind this piece at all. Not wanting to negotiate during the summer isn’t an indication of not wanting to be here. It’s a negotiation tactic. Also why are you quoting something from June 4th, that isn’t relevant now. As of the first day of training camp all insiders have reported Marner is open to contract talks during the season and they’ve already begun prelim discussions. Usually do post some good stuff, but this was just a complete miss. Not even sure it has anything to do with anything. Auston didn’t sign on July 1st, Willie didn’t sign on July 1st either. So why are we making a big deal about not signing an extension on July 1st?

Every player has different pressure points throughout the season where their appetite to sign an extension is heavier. It doesn’t mean they have less of a desire to be somewhere. We’ve heard all summer Marner’s focus has been to improve his game throughout the summer. So if he’s focusing on that, I understand why he’d want to deal with the extension later. It just sounds like he just wanted to be left alone this summer, he got killed (rightfully so at times) the entire playoffs and months after. Shouldn’t be a surprise he didn’t want the business aspect of the game to consume his summer.

Other than the sit down with Friedman, I feel like his interviews had a negative tone to them.
