You are "pretty sure" you didn't compare Marner to Gretzky? Nothing more needs to be said.

Sound the alarm captain over analyzer is on the loose again.

I know I haven’t compared him to Gretzky, but it’s fun to get you to jump to conclusions as always hahaha

He's a much better player when he is looking to shoot first. You gotta have balance.

When teams start to worry about MM shooting, that’s when they’ll get into trouble. Just seems that it’s all too easy to read these days when MM is going to dish to AM. Now if we could get it to where they had no idea, they’d kill it out there. My personal feeling is that the two of them can be super effective out there in the future but right now switching it up is in everyone’s best interests.

We roasted Babcock but he knew what he was doing splitting up Marner/Matthews and putting Hyman with Matthews lol

Yall - Marner's been pretty dayum good this year. With everything that's been said about him and the pressure of a contract year, and for all the reasons he's been legitimately criticized over his stink attitude and his playoff misfortunes - homeboy has just brought it and come to play this year (even throwing his little backside bodychecks- lol).. Looking good, Mitch. Keep it up!!

Marner is the closest style-wise to Gretzky since Gretzky. Even his skating looks a bit similar. And his quick slapper looks really really similar. Kind of weird actually.

It’s been said many times in this thread. No one gives a shit whether Marner is kept or signed. But currently he’s a maple leaf and I’m going to support him because he’s a maple leaf. I want him to do well so we can do well in the playoffs. It’s a simple as that. I would never actively root against a player on our team.

Lmfao please quote me when I have compared him to Gretzky? You won’t be able to because I’m pretty sure I have never done that.

And lol like I said the other day, The Marner Fan Club, Marner Only Fans, that joke is unoriginal and just flat out sucks ass. Come up with something funny and creative at least to troll and make it interesting!!
The only guy I heard compare Mitch to Gretzky was Gretzky himself. Check please.

He's great at driving his own line without Matthews. He's the alpha without Matthews and it works.

Last year it was clear Marner and Matthews wasn't working and Berube went straight back to it, even though the team played best when Matthews was with Domi and Bertuzzi.

Give Marner Knies and give Auston Domi and have Nylander and John on the other line. Then you may actually have 3 lines to use.

I think it’s one of those things where the coach has to see it for himself before splitting Matthews and Marner up. Coaches seem to like having one line that they can match up to any in the league, understandably, but with Berube’s style of play it might make sense to split up the stars and have one elite player going after them shift after shift.

I think they are both just better apart too. Marner looks so much better when he’s not always looking for Matthews. Teams don’t know what he's going to do and it’s very difficult to defend. Marner was much more like that earlier in his career.

Matthews looked better without Marner last year too. He had to take on a bit more of a playmaking role without Marner carrying the puck all the time. He’s just a way more complete player without Marner.

I honestly think there is something to this idea that Matthews advocates to play with Marner. We keep hearing it, it makes sense too, suspect that is part of the equation.

On what basis do you suspect that to be true?

What's so crazy about having all 3 run their own lines and distribute the minutes evenly? Play the fourth line less

Auston & Mitch apparently want to play together, and for whatever reason(s) they get their wish.

I get the idea, and mostly agree with spreading the wealth but Mitch is one of the best passers in the game so it seems like a bit of a waste of his talents if he's feeding guys like Holmberg, Jarnkrok & Domi the puck compared to Matthews.

This issue exists of course because being so top-heavy cap/talent-wise the Leafs don't have the depth to spread out the scoring. The best (only realistic) strategy then may be to just find the ideal top 6 that work well together and count on them to deliver when it counts. It hasn't worked out so far, but there really isn't a plan B when your team is built this way.

The thing with Marner is he's proven time and time again that he produces no matter who he plays with.

Time and time again?

Whats his stats without 11.5 million Matthews and without 11 million Tavares?

He very rarely has played without them since 2019. Here is ALL the mins Marner has played without Tavares or Matthews. Be prepared there is ALOT:

2024: 16 mins with Domi and Bertuzzi outscored 2-1.

2020: 47 mins with Kerfoot and Mikheyev
outscored 3-1.

So there is really no evidence that he produces without Tavares and Matthews and he most certainly hasn't done it "time and time again" lol.
