It’s the fourth biggest market in NA, with perhaps the highest concentration of media outside of NY. We’re a huge market?
And unlike a lot of other cities with large media markets following their teams, our team hasn't won anything in a long time and gets constantly disrespected by multiple high ranking league officials, including the damned Commissioner. Of course our media heads are going to see Bettman dunking on the Leafs and say "Hey, why can't we do that?"

And these repeated attempts to make something out of nothing is one in a long list of reasons why the Leafs are constantly having to overpay to get or retain players. Why would you want to play here where the media is chasing players around bitching about anything and everything they can find when you can sign in a place like Florida and be mostly ignored?

It is a stupid hockey saying been used by coaches for years .. it usually means exact opposite .. usually you'll hear your coach say "play like men not boys" .. for so many years he has heard it thru junior and pro .. it get ridiculous how many times you hear it .. most guys tune it out .. but it gets ingrained in your vocabulary

Not so sure its exclusively a hockey or sports saying, if you feel the need to tell someone you are something, you probably have not done a good enough job to let your actions speak for yourself. If you are a "man" and comfortable in your skin, you don't need to tell people you are a man. IMHO I don't think Marner believes the words that came out of his mouth.

This team is so bloody fusterating.

The more time passes, the more I think Babcock was right all along.

There was too much made of the way Babcock treated the players Imo, especially the young ones. What he did with Spezza was stupid and petty though.

My biggest issue with Babcock was his stubbornness with his lines and loyalty to vets who didn't deserve it. Games 6 in the second Boston series is one of the worst coached games I've seen IMO.

Keefe continues to embarass himself more and more. Totally spineless.

Keefe didnt even say anything crazy, why is he walking it back lol

I know right? The team is playing like shite, what harm is there in calling out your team? We got 3 players making more than 10 mil per year, time those guys play like it. There are 40 players who have as many or more points than our highest scorer and we have played 3 of the 4 absolute dirt bad teams in the league, our "stars" should have 10 points each.

For some reason this blast from the past came to mind.

Leafs can't get no... satisfaction!

He knows his time is running out. He wants one more shot at that handshake line and if he upsets the stars too much he will get his walking papers early.

Keefe is afraid of the players…….what a gong show this team is turning into.
Either Shanny or ownership needs to step in and fix this embarrassing mess
Keefe always seemed like a vulnerable/please don't pick on me kind of guy. This is so bad for him now.

Maybe it’s just me but I feel like Keefe didn’t have to have a follow up on his comments. They played bad and he called them out. Are they that sensitive that the Leafs need to make sure there feelings weren’t hurt?
I agree. We are now seeing the results of the participation trophy handed out in the last 2 decades. I am sure our top 4 is not in this group but MLSE is just as they say CYA

When I saw that behind the scene's clip of Keefe asking the team in OT, who wants to be the hero and talked about fluffy glory stuff and zero talk about X's and O's , I was like WTF is he doing? Are you directing a Hollywood movie or are you trying to win a playoff round? Tell your team what to do... tell them who to watch, review set plays, gauge their mindset so you can give ice time to the guys who have ice in their veins and keep the panicked guys on the bench... crazy thought but you might want to try to get them ready for OT and keep the "Win one for the Gipper" ra ra ra speeches for Hollywood.

The guy knows he's a goner if the team is off to a slow start so he's "coaching" to keep his job, IE: Keep the stars happy, keep the GM happy... just fire the guy and lets move on to Barry Trotz.

Maybe after Keefe’s statement he was pulled into Shannys office and was told to say I used the wrong words. So I think it might stem from upper management.

See this is what I think too. I can't bring myself to believe that Shanny is a soft character or one that would just along with this atmosphere. I can believe that Dubas is as he presents himself and I can believe that the players are acting entitled given the opportunity to do so. Shanny as the genesis of this though? I am not buying it or even that Dubas was his first choice.

The comments from MM are being taking out of context. There is no evidence to suggest that Mitch Marner approached Keefe. Additionally multiple reports are already coming out saying it was Keefe who approached Marner.

All Marner said was keefe talked to him and cleared it up. To me that sounds like Keefe, for no reason decided he needed to circle back. I don’t think the players cared. I think Keefe was just in his own head because he lost his shit after game 1, then he lost his shit again. So I think he was just trying to do damage control for his own peace of mind. But in turn he made it into a bigger story than it needed to be

GET OUT OF HERE WITH THIS REASONABLE TAKE!!

Seems pretty clear that the stars are running the room, not the coach. Maybe Keefe isn't the right personality to be coaching that particular team.

Well you're in luck because dubas will somehow find someone even softer as a replacement

Keefe may have conducted some individual meetings on Wednesday where that public soundbite was delivered more elaborately in private, but it doesn’t change the fact that the performance of the team’s top line will equate heavily to wins and losses.

For as much discussion as the coach’s demeanour has generated in the market, there is no evidence that he’s lost his dressing room. A well-placed source says that Keefe still has the attention and respect of key members of the team.

It’s fair to assume he’s not universally beloved – no coach is – and he’s definitely pushing back hard against any signs of sloppiness or complacency.

Calm down everyone.

Absolutely, in fact Marner said that it was Keefe who approached him. It is though, just like the handshake comment which was half a sentence that was presentented as something it wasn't. Of course, the small minded people took that and, since it fit their agenda, ran with it.

Does our coach seriously have to apologize for being mean to players when they're not putting effort in.

WTF has become of this franchise, honest to god.
HR called him in and informed him any type of verbal abuse regardless of how mild it is will not be tolerated and forced him to make a public apology .

Keefe is so weird. The players didn't care he said it, yet he makes it so awkward after forcing them to have to say stuff like "we can handle it". Same thing happened last year when he had to spin back on calling them soft. None of them cared, even Rielly was like he thought they were too soft in that game too, without even knowing Keefe said anything in the first place.

*unless i am reading this situation wrong and keefe was forced to spin back

Agreed I think Keefe is really worried about being Babcock’d he just needs to focus on winning.
