Tbh I really think Willie wants to play with Matthews, but all indications point to Matthews wanting Marner on his wing. Not to get all soap opera but what Auston wants.....

I think what Matthews and Marner want (and they happen to be on the same page) trumps what the rest of the roster wants. I don't think they view Nylander in the same way as a "Big 4" when it comes to how much the organization will accommodate.

They did this with Hands too. They always look for each other and Rielly. It's shocking how bad Ritchie is.
i havent watched many games in full, but Ritchie is in a surprising amount of highlighs for a fighter. The 2-1 save made on Marner and Matthews was a result of a huge hit by Ritchie, afterwards he pummeled Macarron or however its spelled. i also noticed him take a couple wacks at a covered puck in the crease and nobody on the opposing team did anything about it.

he hasnt been great, but i do see the advantages that might not be measurable of having him out there.

in the past, teams seemed to goon it up when it came to playing the Leafs...this year thw entire team seems to be playing a bit bigger and other teams seem to be targetting players less. guessing it has some to do with both ritchie and simmonds.

What's best for the team trumps what any particular player wants.

Absolutely.

Depending on in game situation though, I think what's best for the team would be flexibility in using the Big 4. Overload. Sure. Mix and match absolutely. Split them up. Why not.

It should

But it's no secret that certain "stars" have long since reversed coaching decisions. There are many successful coaches who's tenure with certain teams have ended very suddenly because the coach didn't want to run his bench they way the star wanted it run.

Some owners get friendly with their star attractions and make sure that the star is accommodated. Recent history in Buffalo tells you all you need to know. Trivial stuff like dress codes is maybe where the slide into distractions and finally cracks in team unity start. There is no reason Buffalo should be where they are, some real good talent, decent coaching but was torn apart when a player over ruled the coach.

Lots of stories out of Pittsburgh in the past, and the sometimes so called model franchise the Canadiens, but that as they say is another story.

I mean, whatever may be happening in other places, there's nothing to suggest that that type of thing is happening here.

Nm how well he plays it will never be good enough for this fan base

show me how many people disliked Marner before his new contract. His support changed once he signed his contract...its business not personal. Marner hasnt scored a powerplay goal in something arouns 103 games, he hasnt scored a post season goal in 18.... and he is currently pacing 18 goals and 68 points while playing with a superstar linemate and making 11 million per year. meanwhile his comparables are generally making 7-8.6 million.

any sensible fan would not be satisfied with his play given his contract.

So it's his fault that there's a cap? Sounds personal

They should not play Marner with Matthews.

It's too predictable.

Matthews always wants the puck in the slot or above the circles, to take a shot on goal. Marner always tries to feed him the puck. Every teams knows this, and they cover Matthews in the slot. Marner holds onto the puck. The puck stops moving. The offensive thrust breaks down. That's it.

If Matthews is behind the icing line or along the boards, and Marner passes him the puck, what difference will it make? Matthews will not score from there, and Marner is just waiting for something, like everyone else on the ice, lol.

Last game was kind of funny. A 2-0 game in the 3rd period with the Leafs in control, and Marner and Matthews get scored on by the 4th line of the Rangers.

It needed a fluky bounce off the end boards, but still, they produce nothing 5 on 5 and get scored on by the 4th line in a low scoring game.

This is a defense first team now. Low event hockey. Marner and Matthews should not play together, and there is no need for them to be on the same line.

..... hes not living up to his contract, it effects the teams ability to be successful. Everyone (fans, gms, analysts etc) in every league with a salary cap judges a players worth based on his ability to play to their contract... how is this personal at all? its personal when you get attached to a player and are unwilling to let go of them despite them not livibg up to their price tag. Marner is a great asset... but not at 11 million.

Matthews seems to want to play a very finesse oriented game when paired with Marner. Enters the zone, east west curl back, leave the puck in an area, little touches, swing around the net, look off the shot attempt for another look, another look. It's fine when it's producing but I want to see different looks as well. I think Matthews is more dominant when he switches on the power forward game, actually starts the forecheck with a big hit and then drives into areas. I think he can take a page from the Draisaitl playbook and really simplify his game at times. Go to scoring areas in straight lines with urgency, move the puck quickly, make those long passes to stretch things out and open seams, stick out the elbows in traffic and make room.

Agreed, Marner and Matthews seem way too focused on one another when together on a line. Marner is only looking for Matthews - not the other linemate and refuses to shoot and Matthews is getting too cute. I dont like the two together at all. Id like to see Matthews with Tavares on his wing... Matthews would be better off with Tavares simple approach? rather than the fancy Tom foolery he and Marner get up to.

Team is 12-5-1. What’s your definition of successful?

Can you imagine if Matthews suddenly put on his "bulldozer" mentality and started imposing his will like Sittler or more recently Sundin could when they needed to. Like Clark but from the center position pounding Dmen on the forecheck, making them a lot more cautious on dump ins and more prone to lost battles and/or giveaways. Instead of just Rockets he'd be up for Hart's as well.

That’s all we got until the playoffs roll around again.

Yes. Because that is where we are.

Feel free to log off for 5 months if that is all you can say. No one will miss these "gems"....

If we're talking about Marner's contract and team success, it makes no sense to just look at the standings today and ignore what's happened in the past. It especially makes no sense to ignore the playoffs as what we all want is to win the cup and for that to happen, you need to succeed in the playoffs.

Not losing sight of the big picture and the ultimate goal but when the team is winning 10 of 11 you kind of have to enjoy it right? It’s not that they’ve redeemed their playoff issues but at least aren’t slipping from their regular season poll position.

It seems a bit of an 'eeyore' attitude to continually lament about the past when there is nothing in the present you can do to change it.
