Marner is the Leafs franchise player and possible future captain, there is no way they do this.

And I could see how Marner is too unproven for a team that's less familiar with him to risk trading a #1D, so doubt Anaheim would want in either.

To put it more bluntly, Marner might be better than Matthews. He's been our best player the past two games, regardless of the 4 goals. You're not getting either unless you offer up a Norris contender, not a mere #1D.

Darren Helm has been our best player the last two games.

Helm for Rielly?

So what I've got out of this thread is the Leafs have the first and second best player in the NHL after 2 games?:shakehead

This is a 22 year old top pairing D. He's more valuable than any prospect.

Not all prospects are equal. McDavid was more valuable than any other player in the league before he even played a single minute last year.

Leafs picked Marner over Hanifin, and Marner has looked better and better since then. Why would they give him up now for a different defenseman who doesn't meet our need for a RHD?

Agreed. We should close this thread and open a Larkin + for Lindholm thread instead.

Think what you'd like but Marner will be better

You're missing the point. Point is is that a 1D is more valuable to a team than a 1W

Sure but 1d and 1w glosses over huge discrepancies within each category. Like, I think Jamie benn is pretty clearly more "valuable" than (insert whoever you feel is a low end #1dman here). we can't confidently say how good either lindholm or marner will be for your statement to have much meaning here

Would Buffalo be idiots to not trade Eichel for Lindholm? How about McDavid for Lindholm? Marner was drafted right after those guys.

Leafs stick with Marner, no question.

Both those players have alot more value than Marner...

Can you quote anybody where they say in absolutes that Marner and Matthews will be the first and second best players on the NHL? Or are you just being dramatic

This would make sense if we could trade Gardiner for Trouba..

Not that far off

and find a way to abolish the salary cap so we could actually afford both of them..

Both can be easily afforded once Toronto sheds garbage contracts

and then find a new top line winger on an ELC without giving up assets. But other than that, definitely doable.

Top 5 pick in 2017

Lindholm Trouba
Rielly Zaitsev

Toronto already has their top LHD spot locked down for the future with Rielly. They don't need Lindholm, especially if Marner, who's one of the cornerstones of their forward core going forward, is coming back the other way.

I'd definitely do the trade as a Ducks fan if Lindholm requested a trade and officially cut off all negotiations with the team. (in other words, if it was confirmed that we weren't signing him) Marner's a young, cost-controlled asset who can play well now and has a ton of upside for the future. If Lindholm gets signed, though, probably not. We've lacked a true 1D since the days of Niedermayer and Pronger. Lindholm is our best shot at that. Even if we're getting a high-end young forward, it's not worth losing out on a possible elite defenseman, which is something we could definitely use.

Don't think Toronto would do it though.

If we're going to give up a guy like Mitch Marner, I'd rather aim high and try to get Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

He's a lot better than Lindholm.

Leafs fans are kidding themselves if they believe management wouldn't think about an offer like this. #1D are crazy tough to acquire in a trade, borderline impossible, and the Leafs have a need for one. That being said I'm not sure if they'd do this, having Marner is amazing too. But it certainly would be considered if the Ducks offered it

While I think the value is there for both teams, I can't see the deal happening. Toronto is not going to give up on Marner who I don't think it is a stretch to imagine will be among the league's top scorers in the not to distant future. I fully expect that the Leafs will continue to build through the draft and free agency, not through trading away their top prospects. It would be a huge shock if Toronto traded any of Reilly, Marner, Matthews or Nylander, though I could see other valuable high end prospects such as Kapanen or Brown available in the right deal.

At the same time I don't think that the Ducks want to move Lindholm, nor should they. The Duck should be looking to move someone (anyone!) else to keep this guy as he is their best defenseman and is a team cornerstone.

Just gotta say as a neutral fan - the homerism/fanboyism from certain leaf's posters is reaching orbital cringe right now - please take a step back and realize how ridiculous you are being.

This kid is being heralded as the second coming of heyzeus/gretzky/kane all in one, I know it's been a rough ~ 50 years but get a grip.
