I'd draw a hard line. No way I am losing kap or AJ. I am not making my team weaker just to pay Marner what he wants. I hope Dubas is not giving into his whims.

There is nothing half-assed about how Matthews plays. People just don't understand different roles in hockey and think every player is supposed to be running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

There was certainly a stretch this past season where Matthews looked disinterestsed, but it very well could have been the injury bug...

Lol, that’s like Chicago saying “There is no way I trade Versteeg or Bolland. I am not making the team weaker just to pay Kane what he wants”...

We have more than enough to sign Marner and keep everybody. If he signs for an outrageous amount it's going to be an offer sheet. And if one hasn't come by late August I highly doubt that it's happening.

The only thing giving Marner more money would prevent is bringing back Gardiner. Which unless we clear a contract slot (we probably sign Neuvirth as well) we can't do anyways.

Sure, but that team won. They were in a much better spot to lose those guys. We are not as good as them and can't afford to lose those guys.

This makes no sense... it’s not like Chicago stopped trying to win or anything...

Leafs want to pay Marner Kane’s 1st contract money, Marner wants Kane’s 2nd contract money. I think they’ll split it down the middle.

1st contract: 5 @ 11.09
2nd contract: 8 @ 15.22

Compromise:

6 years @ 13%

You're weakening a team that has no made it out of the 1st round, while Chicago won the cup. Don't you see a difference? And Marner is not Kane, not yet.

There a no difference... both teams are trying to win.

you’re right, U22 Marner > U22 Kane.

Not sure why you always compare players this way. Every player has a different development curve.

Edit: Just checked the numbers too. Kane had more goals and more total points, what are you basing Marner being better on ?

Probably the fact that Kane had buckets more PP time that inflated his stats beyond Marner.

Ran a comparison of production factoring in ice time a while back:
Salary Cap: - Marner Deal Discussion

Many more PP opportunities league-wide in Kane's time, and the coach distributed the time much differently than Leafs' coach.

Kane had 30 goals and 88 points
Marner had 26 goals and 94 points...

Not really. Ceci has played very well in the 2nd pairing role in the past. It’s first pair duties that he couldn’t handle...

Just a couple of years ago, Ottawa fans didn’t even want to trade him for Hall... this is a young guy too, only a year older than Johnsson!

I’m not saying definitively that he will thrive here, but there is a good chance!

Hope so. I mean, he really just has to be a bit better than Zaitsev to make most of us happy. I just don't think he's going to be as good as some are hoping. If he proves the doubters wrong, we're just gonna be that much better. If not, our current defense is still a big improvement upon the start of last years, although I wish we had Hainsey on the bottom pairing.

His fate is sealed. When Leafs nation chooses a defender to dump on, it never matters how they perform.

Not at all...if he **** up all the time then he deserves the heat. Do you see anyone b*tching about any other leafs defenders other than the one who would screw up at the worst times? Nope.

There were a few shifts in the playoffs that had me wondering if he knows what it takes to win.

So in order to not make the team weaker your solution is to make the team weaker?
