With Matthews on a 5 year deal and one D'man signed for next year and Kadri moved, trading away 1st round picks ... Mitch has a lot more leverage than people think
Precisely why he has none. We can't afford an overpay. If no offer-sheet comes, no more money is coming that what Dubas is offering.

One industry estimate had Marner currently earning a sum in the range of $2 million in annual off-ice income from his wide range of corporate partners, more than double the base salary of his entry-level contract. Leafs all-star centreman Auston Matthews acknowledged Marner’s knack for attracting such opportunities last season: “Mitch is the clubhouse leader (in endorsements), for sure.”
So while the club could argue that Marner ought to look at his off-ice income as a unique benefit of attaching himself to the Maple Leafs brand — a benefit that ought to be taken into account when it comes to arriving at a contract value — Marner’s camp could make the case that it’s Marner, on the basis of his boyish magnetism and on-ice dynamism, who’s earned every dollar of those deals. And no, as has been made clear, Marner’s not interested in cutting the Leafs a discount.

If Marner wasn't a Toronto Maple Leaf, I wouldn't give a crap...just like I don't really give a crap for McDavid, though I respect his tremendous talent...nor do I give a crap about Kucherov...so no, Marner didn't just earn those endorsements because of his looks and dynamism...MacKinnon is a bigger talent than Marner, and more thrilling and dynamic, yet all he could do is ride Crosby's wave in those rare Tim Horton's commercials. Where are those MacKinnon and Matthews Apple commercials? Those sponsors are speaking to the fans of one of the biggest brands in hockey in the Toronto Maple Leafs through Marner.

Marner breaks the silence with "I'd prefer to keep the silence"

Which is actually good on him. **** Masters and all the reporters, this event had nothing to do with his contract.

Nobody in Toronto would care if he's not a RFA with the Leafs still owning his rights.

Eh, it's a bit of both. No doubt the market helps but we weren't getting cool Apple commercials before we had talents like Matthews and Marner.

Right but if they weren’t leafs they’d go back to not having cool Apple commercials. Why doesn’t kucherov do Apple commercials? (Actually he may do Apple commercials on Russia I don’t know) Why doesn’t mcdavid do Apple commercials?

So your point falls away under a little bit of scrutiny. Marner gets these deals because he is a leaf who has elite talent. Not because he is an elite talent.

If he went to New Jersey he’d be doing car dealership ads on the radio at absolute best. For example

Does Laine have Apple commercials playing in Winnipeg? He's been compared to Ovechkin in terms of his shot and one of the youngest elite goal scorers in a long time, and a 2nd overall pick behind Matthews.

He’s still an RFA. He can sit all year like Willy should have been stuck doing.

  • we just gave a team a 1st to take Marleau
  • we traded Kadri for a guy that's a UFA next summer
  • we traded a lot for Muzzin who is a UFA next summer
  • Matthews is on a 5 year deal
Leafs are going to cave soon or Dubas should be fired at season start

We traded kadri for a D who has outscored him by 15 pts and a forward who is 5 years younger and put up 2 less points.

The funniest part is that Nylanders contract will most likely look by far the best out of the 3 when's all said and done.

Nylander made the most sense. He knew he got sandbagged by burning the extra year. He knew he was the most likely
To be sacrificed

He held out to stay.

Just because you wouldn’t give a crap doesn’t mean that advertisers don’t too.

Stamkos did great, amongst the top earners in endorsements.

Star players are picked up for national... and international deals.

Unless you think Comwave and Boosterjuice are amazing local opportunities.

that's, not the point, Dubas traded away a lot of draft picks, prospects, and players for next season and people think you can sit Marner next season, zero chance of that happening

Advertisers speak to the fans...they are there to sell...and Stamkos would do much better in endorsements if he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I agree that it would be far better for the Leafs to trade Marner.

Have you heard of the fact that Canada is about 1/10th the size of the USA?

Raptors final was amongst the least watched in the states despite their popularity here.

MacKinnon and Crosby have national Canadian ads playing in Pittsburg and Colorado. JT had one when he was on the Isles. If you do well for Hockey Canada, you will get advertising money here because a lot of brands like to play on that nostalgia. Hell, Jordan Eberle had one this year.

:laugh:Nylander will finish within 15 points of Marner this year for 3-5 million dollars less. Hardly a cave
You keep spouting this nonsense about willy.
So what you think is willy will get 80 points this year but marner has peaked and won’t get more than his 94.

In order for willy to get 80 he will have to actually go to the dirty areas and in the corners. Something that he has shied from in the past.

There is no guarantee willy will be playing with Matthews and even if he is his best season was 61 points. Last year without Matthews he stunk up the joint.
