Nylander should have been the sacrificial lamb to set the tone

You really think that would have changed where we are today?
Marner not only sees himself as as good or better than AM and JT, but also wants to be "respected"
Nice way of going about it

Nope. Still Wrong. Makes no sense.

AAV - 3rd in the league
Full Contract $ - Nowhere close to top 10

"Based on term" is a BS notion made up by this board, no evidence behind what term is worth (I know it's less AAV for less term, as I have never argued).

They are both valid points.
Matthews is not the highest paid player - fact
HOWEVER, he probably will end up with more money than McDavid after 8 years. - highly probable

And of course his full contract isn't close to the top 10, he only signed for 5 years.

it all evens out though

McDavid 2nd contract will be monstrous say both players after 10 years of post elc contracts McDavid will be so far ahead in career earnings it will be unfathomable. For the record I wouldn't mind the leafs giving McD that monstrous contract if it were possible

I still think Jake signing in CAR means something is close enough that management told Jake sorry dude. Yes I know, we would've had to make a small move or 2 to fit him in, but I think 2 things; first Marner deal is close and second is that, the deal isn't a bridge because we couldn't keep Jake.

Think if Jake signed for 4.05m I almost bet he would've taken slightly less to stay BUT..well Marner is the BUT.

All things considered; LeBrun stating leafs working hardest to sign their RFA, Jake leaves, multiple options (Dubas said) on term Marner is open to. I feel he may well sign before camp

feel like ferris is going to push this to the last second and then cave because he needs to focus on making sure taylor hall gets 15 million next season

Is Dreger on Marner's payroll?

He seems to enjoy hyping-up Marner's bargaining position based on little to nothing, unless there's some added incentive.

Would certainly seem like he’s on the Marner payroll, but he also enjoys telling it like it is to Leafs Nation. Seems to enjoy baseless fear mongering.

Werenski is a better player at his position than Marner is, and just signed for $5m x 3y.
This really isnt true. Werenski was demoted to the third paring for a good chunk of the start of last season.

Marner is a top 5-10 winger already while Werenski is not really close to that and probably will never get there due to his less than stellar defensive game.

Long term, I question the viability of building your franchise around a guy who has that sort of chip on his shoulder against his own organization and is comparing himself vs his teammates. Bergeron, Marchand, Chara don’t look at Krejci and say “we are all better than that guy. Pay me.” They like their situation, are going to be paid handsomely anyway and are just rolling with it.

This kind of pursuit for respect would be more productive if carried out in the pursuit of excellence.

If Marner wasn’t from the GTA, I don’t know how the public would be tolerating these Alexei Yashin tactics.
awfully strong response. Did I read the quote wrong or was this not just Feshcuk thinking out loud about what Marner probably/maybe/sorta thinks about stuff?

I was pointing out that you're trying to sit on a moral high horse that you shot and buried yourself. I have no idea what any of this have to do with the point I was making.

Oh, and if you compare an elite scorer to one of the worst forwards in the league, you're not making an intellectually honest attempt at "quantifying the issues." Congratulations, you proved that position isn't the only thing that matters.
So in case you were not paying attention, people here have been slamming Marner for everything under the sun. Asking for precision in someones opinion doesnt condemn me is any way imo. I need to establish with a good example why goals alone dont tell the story. The point you are making is exactly the point that i was making. If we are to look at goals at the exclusion of points, we are missing the mark. Draisaitl is not better than kucherov because he managed more goals. Centers do not automatically get paid more than wingers. Everything counts. At the end of the day, at what point do specious points of debate become talking points in a battle that seems to run in a circular manner. Is it not important to agree on a benchmark of performance over time to conclude this? The high ground includes the most complete points of fact. If a logical argument is moral then so be it. If the argument is resolved by establishing a future performance benchmark then im not altogether sure why you decide it is necessary to spit vitriol at an attempt to resolve the issue.
Here is the thing. People are allowing their emotion drive their conclusion instead of articulating a logical assessment. If you are triggered by my questions, dont respond, especially when i didnt address them to you. Id be happy to address points of arguments but this bit of vitriol is drama that id rather limit to my better half and my kids. Really not interested in ad hominems today. Ive asked variations of the same ones yet they remain unanswered. I thought that an easy way to resolve it is to establish what success means in the future. Address that as a relative comparison or move on to someone else.

Honestly. If McDavid pulled the chute in Edmonton and demanded a trade, I would be dangling Marner pretty fast on that one.

As much as I'd like to see it happen here especially, I don't think any NHL team could ice a centre group of McDavid-Matthews-Tavares. For a number of reasons. Guess one of them could play on the wing though! ;)

C'mon everyone. It's too quiet haven't heard a thing, Jake left and was widely speculated he'd only leave Toronto when he was told "sorry have no room."

A dominoe will fall between now, and Thursday. With reports also suggesting Dubas is working the hardest to sign Marner, as well as Dubas saying that their are multiple choices with term that Marner is comfortable with, now it becomes a question of $ for each option, that suits the player and the teams cap situation the best.

Dubas' shoes, I'd sit down with Ferris and say well these are the options, let's focus on the best one in your eyes and hash out the $, bonus $, signing bonus.

Also JT kind of said today as well that Marner is preparing like he will be in camp and hopes that something gets done in the next couple days.

Yes, playing the victim card is the perfect way to gain respect. :sarcasm: Respect for his camp is just another word for greed.

If true, that's a nice development but nothing surprising.

All of his teammates, from day 1 have said they expect to see him at camp. It's common language when attending camp or preparing for training camp for all players league-wide to say this about their respective teammates who are without a NHL contract.

Let's hope he's there though.

This is how you know HFboards General is full of losers.

Laine has literally said he doesn't know if he's going to be a Jet this year, there are trade rumours around him, there are locker room issues rumoured at yet it's the Marner discussion that's gone 10+ threads lmao.

Problem is, people are allowed to troll the Leafs around here for some reason.

This!
