I don't get it.

He went alone on the goalie (opted for not trying to score :D), made a drop pass that could be intercepted by defensemen and we are calling it fancy assist / high IQ beauty?

If he scores on a breakaway, he stupid, but not even a shooting attempt and drop pass - Mitch the genius :D
When he did that against Seattle the Leafs were winning 4-1 and it was in the 3rd period. So, maybe he thought it was worth the risk based on the score and it wouldn't try it if they were only leading 2-1.

He has been great, but i expect more. EP should not be ahead if him. Nylander should not be on his tail. He is paid to be among the 5-7 best in NHL. Close but no cigarr. With big salary comes big expectations. Not realy there yet. But i expect him to be at the end of the season.

No explanation on why even strength goals matter for Tavares but doesnf matter for Marner? Can't explain your double standard? I figured as much.

Haha well the fact that you know nothing about time zones makes the rest of your posts make the quality of your other posts lot more sense... Additionally you have 24000 posts since becoming a member in 2017.. Which is double my posts and I've been a member for 10 more years than you. Your on a message board...accusing others I'm the same message board for having no life? Sounds like a good idea to me.

Why do you keep (and fail miserably) trying to make this personal?
Before singing with Toronto when Tavares had 38 goals with the Islanders in 2015, that included 25 goals at 5v5.

In 2019 with the Leafs among the 47 goals he scored, 37 were at 5v5.

The common factor would be him playing with Marner all season at 5v5, so he helped out a lot with those goals he scored.

Taking a guess here but I don't think he said it doesn't matter for Marner because he's expected to setup a lot more goals than scoring them himself. That doesn't mean Marner doesn't want to score goals. However, I don't think anyone had him scoring 35 goals in 72 games last season, when his previous best was 26 goals in 82 games in 2019.

I forgot to mention how last season when Michael Bunting had a breakaway he did the exact same drop pass, and Marner ended up scoring his 4th goal of the night against Detroit when the Leafs won 10-7.

I think that your points are valid and I agree with them.

I just believe that in general, it's a stupid play, not a beautiful assist or pass. If its bad 1:1 dont do it leading 4:1 . Team should try to adapt as much of good habits during the regular season as possible.

In the case of Bunting leaving it for a better scorer in Marner, you have an additional argument for this play.

Earlier this season and I want to say it was against the Blues, the Leafs were losing along with being on the penalty kill and Marner had another shorthanded breakaway and tried that same drop pass, however this time it didn't work. So, in that moment I wished he attempted a shot on goal.

Marner is either super unlucky or does not care for pts this year

He's got pts in 47 out of 54 games

I'm too lazy too look it up atm but that's got to be a better conversion rate than Hart Matthews

Marner should realistically be at around 70-75 pts right now with how consistent he's been

Checked the stats

2022 Matthews went 58/73 for games with at least 1 pt or good for a 79.4% rate

2023 Marner has 47/54 gamehave more
With at least 1 pt which is good for a 87%

He's been incredibly consistent. Should have more 2 and 3 pt games this year

To be fair he needs guys to finish more of his setups how often do you see marner make a nice pass but no finish from our forwards

Do analytics back up that he's created a lot of plays that haven't been finished? Or is this your opinion?

Goal scoring in the NHL isn't easy, Marner is proof, he's got 1 even strength goal in his last 26 games. He's playing with three of the top goal scorers in the entire league (Nylamdrr, Tavares, Matthews) .. It really doesn't get better than he has it.

He’d have another 30 points easily.
.... Yep.. If Marner was playing with anyone other than the regular 40-60 goal scorers he plays with he'd probably have 30 more assists easy.

99% sure that both Tavares and Matthews have more goals while playing on a line with Nylander, rather than Marner.

In Marner's first two seasons he played on lines where his Centre's was Tyler Bozak and Nazem Kadri. It's fair to say they weren't at the level of goal scoring the way Auston Matthews was. He also never had any power play time with Matthews until his third season when John Tavares was signed. Despite that he still set a Leafs rookie record with 42 assists in 2017.

Marner is known for his playmaking skills a lot more than his goal scoring. You seem fixated about him having 1 5v5 goal in his last 26 games, even though he's also had some power play goals and shorthanded goals scored during that time.

Wayne’s hockey IQ was so much higher than anyone else’s… that’s why they referred to his office being behind the net.

The game plays out in slow motion for guys like Wayne and Mitch.
As to who's is better some opl in the nhl have said mitch and some said Wayne.

When it comes to Hockey IQ, it is hard to quantify.
For example, due to McD skating, it allows him to have more space and time than any other players in the league. With more time and space, it allow players to make better decisions, at least in theory.
Point I am trying to make is that Hockey IQ or any sports IQ can only go as far as the players skills. Like anyone knows how to beat Michael Jordan one on one in Basketball, just need to stop him from scoring, but I don’t think a lot of players have the skill sets to do it.
To me sports IQ can be define as mistakes from the players. I am not talking about risky plays, as risky plays are high risk/high reward, but rather just complete boneheaded plays.

Hockey iq is more about reading plays and understanding what's going to happen or likelyhood . Mitch is at the top of the heap when it comes to anticipating plays before they happen and reading evry available option . That's beyond skill . It's reactionary but not enough time imo for a brain to process reads, he just knows what to do . That imo is hockey iq. Hard to quantilfy yes , other than watching with the eye test of how over and over how the hell did he do that . To add to his hockey iq he has incredible timing and accuracy on his passes . It's not any individual pass , it's the frequency he makes them .

Since Mitch leads the team in even strength assists with 23 (Willy is third with 19), I suspect that's not accurate.

A large part of his not scoring lately may be who he's been playing with: Tavares is not a particularly good set up man. Nylander, the only one Mitch doesn't play with at ES, is the only one who is as good as Mitch (they each have 10 ES assists over that 22 game span).

What 22 game span are you referring to?....i appreciate the breakdown. The two stats pages I looked at have Marner with 23 and Nylander with 21 primary assisrs and Matthews and Tavares with 18 each.

Also Matthews has been hurt for 7 games and I imagine Marner played with Tavares over those 7, while Tavares drew the short straw for linemates.

Your sleight of hand is terrible. Good grief

If you look at Hockey-Reference Nylander has 19 even strength assists.

Anyone remember that pass banked off the goalie’s pad… perfectly to Matthews to win the game late in the third?

That play was extreme high hockey IQ… nobody does that. They either shoot or pass… not Mitch, he knows the goalie will kick the puck directly onto Auston’s stick.

Super elite.
One of the few players that it seems like their line could score every shift.
