Tribute Marner Appreciation Thread

"Mitch Marner has legitimately been one of the best penalty killing forwards in the league for the last 3 seasons"

That is probably a more appropriate caption for that tweet.

I think one thing that gets lost in Mitch's game is that his anticipation and ability to see the play develop does not stop with the puck on his tape. He has elite vision, and it is always on full display offensively. It is what makes the SC top 10, and what the Lehman NHL fan know him for most. But his vision defensively is every bit as impressive IMO. It really gets showcased on the PK as you really need to read the play to ensure youre body and stick are in the right lanes. He's always scanning the ice to identify where he can gain a tactical advantage or usher the opposition into a less threatening position. Also, his ability to make plays under pressure is right up there with the best in the world. I was skeptical having Mitch kill penalties when they first put forth the idea, but he is definitely our best PK'er, and I'd easily put him in the top 10 league wide. Probably higher TBH. Just an elite elite player in every aspect.

It's amazing what Marner has done on the penalty kill and setting up a short handed goal like this.

It’s to the point where I think opposing teams have to game plan on the PK knowing he’s put there, at least be very aware of where he is and the dangers he presents. His PK ascendance is under appreciated.

When he had that short handed breakaway against Florida, was he looking to make that drop pass he's done before? Watching it I was thinking to myself why he didn't attempted to shot the puck, although I can't remember if he was not able to and Kampf wasn't close enough to get the pass back.

I don’t disagree with anything being said recently, but I think it’s crazy to think that Marner’s ability to understand and anticipate the developing play is getting lost. Personally that’s what I consider hockey IQ and me and fellow Leafs fans I know consider his hockey IQ to be by far his strongest attribute and probably tops in the league for my money.

Marner’s weakest stretches of play imo are always when he is too focused on making a certain play he thinks he needs to play rather than just following his god given instinct.

Oh and also I thought it was kind of ridiculous how long it took for us to start using Mitch on the PK, anyone who watched him on the Knights knew what an absolute beast at killing penalties he was.

Earlier on in his NHL career, how much of that was due to Mike Babcock and not wanting him to be drafted 4th overall in 2015.

I'm bored and listening to 590, Nick Kypreos. He's singing the praises of Marner, smartest player he's ever seen, etc. Wasn't it Kypreos who was beating the 'trade Marner ' drum just a few years ago?
I don't think he wanted him traded because he thought he was a bad player but to spread the cap around differently.
He wasn't the only one.

At that time Marner was still on his ELC and in his 2nd year. So was he really that concerned about the Leafs salary cap or said that to generate headlines in the Toronto media?

Also, I just listened to the link you provided. He had Hyman and Connor Brown ahead of Marner as far as depth goes. It's a bit of a ramble, but it seems like Kypreos was arguing that Marner should be traded because the coach (Babcock) doesnt utilize him. I understand that hindsight is genius, and I also understand that his job is to generate headlines, but really, that was an awfully silly stance. Anyway, the Leafs ended up doing the right thing and got rid of the coach.

And further to your salary cap point, not many, if any, were predicting at that time that Marner would end up getting as big of a contract as he did.

Marner does seem to be a lightning rod any time his play slips a bit. I personally love the kid. He's great.

Marner had been demoted to the 4th line that year and worked himself up a bit. I think that Kyper felt that as a 4th overall who played his first post draft year in the OHL, that Marner didn't fit in the organization given the brief demotion. He really wasn't doing that well as it seemed Babcock killed his confidence. He did manage to show everyone up though because following the placement on the line with Kadri in December, Marner managed 1.13 ppg for the rest of the year. The fact that he only finished with 69 points tells you how poorly he was doing. Interestingly, Marner has not dipped below a 90 point level for 82 consecutive games since.

I wonder how much of Marner getting demoted to the 4th line was due to Babcock not wanting Mark Hunter to draft him?

I know it's easy to say with hindsight why Kypreos said what he did, however we only see that now after what came out after Babcock was fired and his treatment of Marner.

Doing really well. He is tied with Nylander and Hyman for points. I know what you're going to say, ya ya Nylander and Hyman have more goals and Hyman has played 1 less game and makes less money and all that. It doesn't matter though until it does.

Go Marner!
