Tribute Marner Appreciation Thread

All pro athletes are extremely competitive, it's one of the things that separate them from us mere mortals.
Yep. And beyond that, you certainly don't become one of the best players in the league in all situations in the most competitive league in the world by not being competitive.

But I guess claims like that are the only thing left when there's no actual, valid arguments against a player.

He just needs to elevate in the post season.

Signs that someone didn't watch the games and is making judgements from game logs

Don't you know? Every single bad thing that happens is Marner's fault, and every single good thing that happens is because of everybody except Marner.

Also he sucks because he doesn't have resting grumpy face.

:biglaugh:
I should have known he was wrong some specific bad play by Marner against Tampa because nothing came to my mind.

I know against Montreal he had that delay of game penalty against Montreal in Game 6 that gave them a 5v3 and it resulted in a goal against. However, I always thought that was Keefe's fault for challenging the previous goal and since it failed that resulted in a penalty. So, if that never happens the Leafs aren't on a 5v4 penalty kill and chances are Marner doesn't clear the puck into the seats.

My opinion of Marner hasn'tchaged much, his vision on the ice is probably as good as any player I've seen. I mean ANY player. It's not anything you can teach, probably honed by many hours playing FPSgames (I played them too growing up), great for developing hand eye coordination and quickly identifying patterns..

What makes him elite in the regular season at times, can be a major burden at times. An even much higher risk of a burden come playoffs.

I will give you a prime example, outside of the flubbed pass up the middle last night that lead to a break/goal, his plays when he almost comes to a complete stop across the bue line, surveys the landscape and finds his man for a goal.

It's a nice play when it works. Come playoffs against elite teams, they will be planning for him. They will try to stand him up all the blue line, force a turnover/odd man rush. Habs did it, Tampa does it.

Nylander was similar in his approach, now he is far more.North/South in his play. Hard on the puck, looking to get it in deeper and THEN he performs. It's a matter of a couple of feet and momentum but it can be the difference in a series. Caution is the bettrr part of valor.

Nylanders OT goal last week was a.perfect example of how much harder he is on the puck today thsn say a couple of years ago. He fights through a D Man along the boards and scores on a break. A pure "I won't be denied" goal.

Marner was playing more like this earlier this seasoin, I fear the point streak loosened him up. Playoffs are not an East/West affair.

2:59 of this video....marner can pass backwards to a defender, or he could put it off the glass towards bunting, or he could ice it...instead he glances and see Matthews steaming down the center and throws a lob pass (that he likes to do) at Matthews which is intercepted by a Tampa player who picks it up at nearly full speed catching leafs defenders unprepared for the counter..

But tell me what you see on this play....

@dekesfordays already said that this wasn't a pass attempt and also that it was Matthews fault for falling...even though the puck was behind where Matthews fell.

Here is Marner in game 6 vs Montreal... Down 1-0 with 14 mins remaining. Similar play, he has tons of space to clear the puck and he overplays it and flips the puck out of play. Leading to Montreals 2-0 goal. Leafs lose.

How are these not Marners problems? Both are critical, back breaking and unnecessary mistakes.

I mentioned the mistake Marner made in Game 6 against Montreal. I guess you missed that or how I said if it wasn't for Keefe challenging their 1st goal and a penalty as a result of that Marner would have never been on the ice in a penalty kill and cleared the puck into the crowd to give them a 5v3.

The other video you posted against Tampa says it's not available in Canada, so I can't see the specific play you are referring to. Hell if you're going to bring up mistakes why not mention the drop pass Kerfoot made in Game 6, which Ondrej Palat picked off and scored unassisted to give Tampa a 1-0 lead. Since the Leafs lost 4-3 in overtime I say that mistake is worse than anything Marner did in that series.

Here's the Marner mistake I remember early in the second in Game #7 vs Habs which directly led to the first goal. Yup, Soup should have had it.

In that moment I remember thinking that Campbell should have stopped that shot.

Marner also made a mistake which led to the goal, however I remember he got more criticism for the delay of game penalty he took in Game 6, giving Montreal a 5v3 and them scoring to make it 2-0.

1. There is no way for any players not to have a bad play or two in a 7 games playoff series. It is normal and common but you can’t just use those bad plays and claim the player underperform. Ofcourse, if said player didn’t produce and stuff, that’s another story.
2. You can argue MM tends to overthink sometimes(less so this season) or his Dad used to open his mouth way too much(to me, all athletes parents and families should really keep all comments to themselves) or MM can’t shoot or MM is not worth his contract when he signs or even now….but you can’t deny he is a very talented player, one of the best in the league.
3. MM is a great player but he is not McDavid level and nobody in the league is McD level, even those who come close(MM included) are at least a tier below McD.
4. Just bc another Lesfs is doing well doesn’t mean MM sucks and vice versa.

In conclusion, MM is a great player and like all greats before, present or after, he will make mistakes like Wayne did, will have bad games like Howe, will struggle at times like Mario and will also make amazing plays shift in and shift out like Orr.
