What fans are those? Matthews produced like 2 even strength points in the first 12 games while Marner was on his line. He's probably top 3 in even strength points since being put with Nylander.
I was referring to Matthews goal scoring being down compared to last year and Marner not on his line at 5v5.

.......ok and you think it's because he's not with Marner? Matthews has played on a line with Marner this season AND on a line with Nylander and his Matthews has been SIGNIFICANTLY, SIGNIFICANTLY more productive 5vs5 with Nylander.

Powerplay is irrelevant because Nylander, Tavares, Marner and Matthews all play together. The reason Matthews is less productive this year, has more to do with his time with Marner than it does Nylander. Also note that Matthews is also like a +16 with Nylander vs +1 with Marner.

What your saying makes no sense.

I suggest that you guys stop looking at stats and just watch this guy play.
Not just for the goals and assists but also the little things he does during the entire game.
You guys is really just one. Everyone else can easily identify an elite all around player.

I also question Marners competitiveness relative to other top players. Marner (in terms of leadership) is that he doesn't show much in terms of competitiveness. Kucherov is pissed when his team is down, it's all over his face. It's not a crybaby face, it's a I hate losing expression, it's anger and determination. Crosby in his prime, was physical, fought occasionally, and was undenoably tough...he slashed a gloved finger clean off once. McDavid throws hits and is always screaming at the refs (similar to Crosby), Ovechkin ..physical force.

Marner.... Hangs his head and avoids physical areas. Is it a coincidence he struggles in the most important games?

Your argument just completely went out the window. Competitiveness is not a measurable thing, it’s completely subjective, not objective. To me Marner is one of the most competitive guys on the leafs and that’s been back up by Kyle and Sheldon. He’s so competitive they’ve had to have conversations with him to manage that. There’s no right way to express (whether it be through facial expressions or actions) disappointment.

Just an all around stupid argument on your end. You can’t determine a players competitiveness based on how they act on the bench.

I rather see Marner look disappointed like in Game 6 against Montreal when they made 2-0 because he was in the penalty box due to a delay of game penalty, instead of him looking happy in a moment like that.

Do you think anyone would say Gary Roberts wasn't a competitive player? Anyone here want to say he wasn't? Did anyone know him personally? How could this be determined then?

When did Keefe and Dubas say Marners competitiveness? Marner has had to conversations because he's emotional..some would say he's emotionally fragile because he struggles with criticism (see him needing to avoid his social media).

Marner is pushing up towards an annualize 90 pt per season career average. Currently 88 and on pace this year for 98. My guess is he is over 100 with his typical late season push.
Headed for the hall.
Last season he had 97 points in 76 games. So, let's hope he gets at least 100 points after coming so close last season.

I've referred to him as a 100+ point player despite never actually getting 100 points.
I agree. For all intents and purposes Marner is a 100+ point player, he just hasn't hit that number yet in his career.

Now don't go posting that on the main boards because some people use to call Matthews a 50 goal scorer when he ended up with 47 goals in 2019-20. However, they were told since he didn't hit that number it was wrong to call him that.

Separate point but I lived in the same town as Gary Roberts and he looked competitive enough to blow a vein sitting in a restaurant having dinner with his family.

Again it doesn’t change the fact that it is purely subjective. You cannot measure competitiveness, it is literally impossible.

You’re making an assumption based on your opinion of what you believe demonstrates competitiveness. Which is fair, but it doesn’t mean that you are necessarily right and everyone has to subscribe to your point of view.

I have no issues with Marner’s emotions because it shows he cares about the team in MY opinion. Not everyone is wired to have an emotional output that allows them to go out and kill people on the ice. Some people have a different emotional response and it doesn’t make them less manly or less competitive. It’s exactly that, a different emotional response.

You said competitiveness was not measurable and subjective. I disagree. Do you think Crosby is competitive? Do you think Roberts is? Do you think anyone would disagree that they weren't? I thought it couldn't be seen?

Looking forward to your response.

Nobody said kill anyone... I'd take an angry face and a little trash talk and Marner doesn't do any of that.

I can tell you straight up - I went to a hockey tourney where his son and mine were in the mix, and I stopped and said hi, introduced myself and my son while apologising for being a stupid fan, but quickly saying that I just wanted my son to meet a real NHLer who I thought had an incredible amount of determination and willpower to succeed.

I can't convey to you how hard his handshake was (I'm a big guy, 6'2" and heavy and strong) or properly make you understand how INTENSE his gaze was, but I can tell you that when shaking his hand, I went through a mix of emotions where I thought the chances of him slapping me on the back or punching me in the face were equal.

I KNOW that guy was competitive . . . my lord, drop of the hat competitive.

I've met Marner before as well - skated on the same ice with him with my boy as well - it's a different generation and a totally different player . . .he's no Roberts that's for sure, but I also know he's competitive - he's a superstar in the NHL!!!!

Every player makes mistakes, and it sucks if that results in a goal against. So, one bad play by Marner isn't going to change all the good he has done.
One bad play? Marners mistakes caused both backbreaker game 6 goals against vs Montreal and Tampa. Didn't he have two giveaways that led to goals vs Anaheim this year? Where he was benched?

if he's making these mistakes in the season, chances are he's not learning from the playoffs giveaways.

Competitiveness cannot be quantified, therefore it is not something that can be measurable objectively. It is a quality or character trait that people subjectively give or label an athlete based on their personal opinions or ideals of what they believe competitiveness is. It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree, that's just a simple fact.

Competitiveness can be displayed in many forms, I think Crosby is competitive, I think Roberts is competitive, I think Marner is competitive. All 3 display that in different ways. There is no one set way that defines competitiveness.

Again an angry face or trash talk isn't the set definition of competitiveness. Not everyone has that type of personality, someone who has fun playing the game of hockey they love can be just as competitive as someone who is angry while they play. I'm not sure what part of that you're not understanding.

What bad play did he have against Tampa? On that 5v3 in Game 6 when they tied the game that only happened because of the two phantom penalties which should never have been called to start with.
