Tribute Marner Appreciation Thread

Put up the article. I really want to see which idiot attributes Bunting with the same impact as Marner. It is just so stupid, an award should be given.
My question is where has the Bunting effect been this year?

He's been on Matthews' wing virtually all year yet Matthews is pacing less goals and points than last year.

Honestly if Matthews is to get back to last year's form, it's probably going to be when him and Marner get reunited.

Matthews with Marner
12 games 6 g 12 points +1
Powerplay points -12 games 4 g 8 p
Even strength - 12 games 2 g 4 p +1

Since splitting up Marner and Matthews
27 games 13 g 33 points +17
Powerplay 27 games 4 g 7 p
Even strength 27 games 9 g 26 p +16

Seems Matthews has been better off without Marner.

Looks more like a powerplay issue to me

Here are Matthews stats from last season and this season, so you can see his exact stats after 39 games played with and without Marner.

On the eye test level, I've never seen Matthews bobble so many pucks as this season. When it's a game of millimeters and split seconds to snipe so many of those goals, I don't think it's linemates. Matthews is just off peak right now.

Man, 500 points. Seems like not too long ago Marner was streaking off the wing scoring his first goal vs Boston.
His 1st NHL point was that goal against Boston, so it's fitting that his 500th point was a goal.

In fact, among my collection of Leafs memorabilia is a signed framed picture of Marner after he scored his 1st goal and this is what it looks like.

We are still waiting to see Marner without an elite linemate. We already know Tavares and Matthews are ppg players with lesser linemates.

You realize players get better with age right? Marner had 69 points in his second year in the league and after getting out of Babcocks doghouse had over a pgg in his final 50 or so games playing with guys like kadri and jvr.

JT only had 4 extra total points but 15 extra even strength points as JT and Marner didnt get a lot of pp time that season compared to most other top point producers in the league.

Congratulations to Mitch! I was proudly wearing my Marner jersey last night, as I watched him accomplish the milestone!

You didn't read my post very well. I said Marner seems to benefit from playing with these guys more than the other way around. Where's Marner without Matthews?

Are we forgetting that Marner out produced Matthews early on in their ELC years. Let’s not act like Marner wasn’t destined to be a star in this league.

Marner had 61 points in his rookie year playing primarily 3rd/4th line minutes and being on PP 1.

I think we have to give both players credit, Marner and Matthews have proven they can be fine without each other.

I much prefer rolling the current lines to selling out future for some top 6 rental player for sure. We should be favorites to beat TB and we should be able to give give Boston a good fight as well. Beat TB, get some confidence and if the goalies play well, we can beat anyone.

Still think we need a top six forward to solidify things. Hopefully we can find a Nick Paul or Brendan Hagel type.

Someone low cost but can provide offense and two way play.

Or maybe Knies is that guy for us

Marner is a dynamic, must watch, player right now and if he had someone to play with it'd be scary fun.

Or two defensively responsible forwards to play with Johnny Marleau and then stack a line with Marner, Nylander and Matthews.

Wore my marner t-shirt last night.
Hadn't wore it since before their good streak, but they kept losing on those nights so I put it away.
Figured all the bad luck would have been washed out of it.
Was right, so now it's in the wash.
Better win tonight, or I'll have to wash it every couple of days!

I need to realize this? Have you not been reading the posts in here that Matthews scored more once put on Marners line? Matthews was a 40 goal score as a rookie, playing with another rookie (Nylander). He was pacing 44 the next season playing primarily with Johnssom, Marleau, Brown.... Yet because he hit 50 in his 6th year, with Marner certain posters are saying it was because of Marner?.

Didn't see you on that can't pointing out getting better with age. Do you agree that Matthews hit 60 because of Marner or do you think Matthews just got better with age?

I've read multiple advanced statistic articles that showed evidence that Tavares was the line driver in 2019 and that Marners advanced stats (during last year's hot streak) weren't that great relative to other top NHL players. I posted the articles and nobody proved the articles wrong, instead those posters slung insults at the writers (but provided no evidence to show the writers were incorrect).

How about the other Leafs fans who have said one reason Matthews is scoring less goals so far this season is because Marner is not on his line at 5v5.

What fans are those? Matthews produced like 2 even strength points in the first 12 games while Marner was on his line. He's probably top 3 in even strength points since being put with Nylander.

I also question Marners competitiveness relative to other top players. Marner (in terms of leadership) is that he doesn't show much in terms of competitiveness. Kucherov is pissed when his team is down, it's all over his face. It's not a crybaby face, it's a I hate losing expression, it's anger and determination. Crosby in his prime, was physical, fought occasionally, and was undenoably tough...he slashed a gloved finger clean off once. McDavid throws hits and is always screaming at the refs (similar to Crosby), Ovechkin ..physical force.

Marner.... Hangs his head and avoids physical areas. Is it a coincidence he struggles in the most important games?

Fun fact: Marner has at least a point in 35 of the team's 40 games this season.

No surprise, as we all witnessed his franchise-record point streak.

Really speaks to his high level of competitiveness, leadership, determination, ability to generate chances from dangerous areas, and ability to elevate his game in important moments.
It's really obvious how much he hates losing.
