I think it's the other way around. Matty said he'd sign for a discount, and then Willy said if Matty did, so would he.
If they can reign in Matty's greed, Willy will fall into place.
On evolving hockey, Aho was projected to sign an 8 year deal at 10.3. He signed at 9.75. Not a huge discount given a margin of error and he was paid with a NMC.
Willy pegged for 9.5mmx8 from their model. I don't think anybody would be upset with that but definitely not much more.
The problem is with any desired lower term. If the leafs have aspirations of making a move on McDavid, they might choose to lower the term just in case. 3 yrs 8.2 and 4 yrs 8.6.
I dont think anyone would be upset at that. Nobody is really looking at Willy giving a discount. If he gives any on his value, it will be small. The question is on over pay. Matthews is but a distraction to the discussion. A rounding error on his pay is big money to Willy. While bringing up Matthews might seem like a great PR idea, it amounts to nothing that is really tangible from a contract perspective.
If the leafs are looking to massively discount the numbers above, I can totally buy into a discount buy in from Matty but who actually thinks that a discount from Willy will look massively lower than those?
We are chasing pennies
