Lol is this for real? Him and O'Reilly had some great early chemistry going but his broken finger messed that all up
It's half real. It was more-so just joking around. I'm sure Mess just left out the context and preceding and subsequent paragraphs by accident:

"Now, no longer a rookie, Marner is one of the locker room leaders in Toronto. He's always the first guy to reach out to people when they are acquired by or signed by the Leafs to offer his services or just to welcome someone to the team. As you can imagine, Marner being the sort of outgoing personality that he is, seems to get attached to his teammates and vice versa, I'm sure."

"Holl landing at number one should be no surprise, because we know that Holl and Marner were very close in Toronto, often being vacation buddies and planning their vacations together. Marner also joked that he wanted to put Bunting lower just to mess with him, and admitted that Schenn and O'Reilly were going to be pissed at him for ranking them so low, before admitting that he's going to miss all 6 of them very much."

He pretty much just went by how long they've been part of the team.
It's a ridiculous question to ask in the first place, but it was supposed to be comical, and Marner handled it well.

Yeah that makes the most sense and what I originally thought was the case, no way they could take it personal that way.

I was watching top goals of this past year and saw Marner on about half a dozen of them. His moves were fantastic! How does he not get 50 goals? I don't get to watch any games but playoffs, and I just assumed he was an assist man.

Does Marner not score a ton of goals because he plays with Matthews, or does he just get some fancy ones now and then? I feel like he is underrated.

Phenomenal talent, underrated and unappreciated. He could score more easily if not so unselfish.

Or you know, overpaid and overrated and could score more if he could shoot better.

Or to put it another way, opinions vary. ;)

He lead the big boys on the team in shooting percentage. He just doesn't shoot anywhere near as much. I soopose he would rather puck retrieve everyone's missed shots

Had 35 goals in 72 games last season, 40 goal pace. Not bad for someone who is primarily a set up guy.

Much was made of whether the so-called 'Core Four' of Auston Matthews, William Nylander, John Tavares and yourself should be broken up because of perceived postseason failures by the group. It doesn't appear Treliving wants to break up the band, although Auston and William are entering the final year of their contracts. Rightly or wrongly, how do you four deal with having such responsibility and, hand in hand with that, the potential blame when expectations aren't met?

"Look, we want to take a lot of responsibility. Ya, we definitely have a lot of weight on our shoulders, but it's weight that we've all wanted and have asked for pretty much with what we do on the ice. At the same time, it's definitely a team sport, you need everyone out there, and we all know that we need to be better to achieve our ultimate goals. So there's nothing you can really do about it other than just kind of ignore the outside noise and know that everyone in that locker room appreciates each other."

A Selke for Marner would be great. If Matthews get a 4 year deal for 13.5m, the Selke would help Marner argue that he wants the same deal, of maybe 4x13.6m. Classic win/win for everyone. :)

At a project 92mm salary cap, a kane contract gets him 8 years at 14mm. Maybe close.

Projected cap and potential future worst contract in the league as a comparable :thumbu:
Consider it a bargain. Marner exceeded Kanes ELC contract and is by far exceeding his RFA contract.
Throw a selke in there and we will see quite clearly how generous Marner is to the team.

Defensive side of the puck is definitely a trait the two don't share.
The kid will have a long career. Hoping they can keep all the boys salaries checked or termed for turnover for 2026-2027. Need space for McDavid. JT cap hit is out but will need at least the cost of a burtuzzi type player to sign him. Shouldn't be a problem if they can reign in Willy's greed. Matty will fall into place if they keep Willy reasonable. Best is yet to come.

You're too funny. According to you, Marner's generous, Willie's greedy, and Matty will fall into place, he just needs Willie to go first to set the tone as Matty's a follower, not a leader.

Things are never boring in Bizzarro world.:laugh:

Agreed, they just have to stay the course. Honestly I’d line the Matthews extension up with McDavid expiry. Let Matthews walk bring McDavid home.
