Predictions for the Traverse City Roster?

Forwards
LW Brandon Lisowsky - C Mikhail Abramov - RW Pontus Holmberg
LW Pavel Gogolev - C Fraser Minten - RW Max Ellis
LW Beau Jelsma - C Braeden Kressler - RW Ty Voit
LW Ryan Chyzowski - C Graham Slaggert - RW Pano Fimis
LW Orrin Centazzo - C Brett Budgell - RW Avery Hayes

I suspect the Leafs are not going to bring any of the guys who could realistically challenge for an NHL job this year, which eliminates McMann (who is 26 anyways), Abruzzese, Robertson, and Steeves. With a glut of centers, Douglas and SDA are also left off of the list despite being further away from the NHL. Both have been to 3 tournaments each as it is, and I think they will make their pitch in the upcoming training camp and AHL season.

The top 3 lines are, as you can probably figure out, the guys who you want to be showcased, while the other 2 lines are more AHL contract guys and filler. It is small, but not short on work ethic and ability to be tough on pucks.

I am curious to see how Lisowsky and Abramov work together, as both are versatile offensive threats with good work ethic and something to prove to scouts (with Lisowsky going in the 7th round and Abramov being relegated to more of a defensive bottom 6 role on the Marlies and not putting up great production). Holmberg could use a tournament like this to get some more games on NA ice ahead of training camp, and makes the line a nice two-way threat.

Gogolev has a lot to prove as one of the older guys that should be in this tournament, especially after last season, and needs to dominate to prove he can be a legit prospect. Putting him in the Knies role on the Knies-Minten-Ellis standout line from development camp will hopefully set him up to do just that. He could gain a few things by emulating Knies, because while he has the size and shooting ability, he does not have that same work ethic and drive that makes Knies an elite prospect.

Jelsma was by far my best ELC candidate going into development camp, and proved it in camp. He has earned an opportunity to showcase himself with Kressler and Voit. He may just end up with that ELC.

Fimis did not do anything to really stand out and prove he had the tools that were missing throughout his draft year. However, he does have a nice tool box and prestige, and there were not really any better alternatives out of development camp. He did not fare well on the wing in the WJC, but we need guys who can play RW and he is a RH playmaker. We will see if he can get things to work out properly with a pair of older depth AHLers. If the Leafs like someone who was not at their development camp, like Hardie, Fimis may be out of luck.

Last line is mostly one which should resemble the top line for the Growlers this year, except Hayes is there over O'Brien. Hayes did well in development camp, but I am not sure he is really the kind of guy who is worth an ELC. He likely goes back for his OA year in the OHL and then may be someone we bring in for the 2023-2024 Growlers, so this is more of a future AHL contract showcase.

Defenseman
LD Mikko Kokkonen - RD William Villeneuve
LD Marshall Rifai - RD Axel Rindell
LD Noel Hoefenmayer - RD Tommy Miller
LD Kasper Larsen - RD Grayden Siepmann

Mostly just pairing guys who could end up together at some point this year, plus a pair of the more promising development camp invitees. Larsen is fighting for an AHL contract and would be a good fit to round out the Growlers' defense. Siepmann was at least one of the highest rated guys who went undrafted (according to CSS). I would be open to inviting someone who didn't go to development camp instead of Hoefenmayer and Siepmann though.

Goalies
G Keith Petruzzelli
G Luke Cavallin
G Marco Costantini

McKay would have likely been here, but I don't think he can participate with his suspension. Costantini was invited to the development camp so he can be the placeholder. I would personally just give Petruzzelli and Cavallin two games a piece though.
Great write up I appreciate it and imagine everyone else does too. Do the European prospects not play in this because their seasons are already started? I know NCAA guys don’t because they would lose their eligibility.

Exactly it. Euros aren't making the trip when their seasons are already going.

LW Nick Robertson – C Semyon Der-Arguchintsev – RW Pontus Holmberg
LW Alex Steeves – C Nick Abruzzese – RW Adam Gaudette
LW Bobby McMann – C Curtis Douglas – RW Max Ellis
LW Pavel Gogolev – C Mikhail Abramov – RW Logan Shaw
LW Kyle Clifford - C Graham Slaggert – RW Joseph Blandisi
RW Wayne Simmonds

LD Carl Dahlstrom – RD Victor Mete
LD Filip Kral – RD Jordie Benn
LD Mikko Kokkonen – RD Mac Hollowell
LD Matt Hellickson – RD William Villeneuve
RD Axel Rindell

G Joseph Woll – G Erik Kallgren
G Keith Petruzzelli

Not sure keeping Simmonds really makes sense unless someone higher in the lineup gets claimed on waivers. We may give him a chance elsewhere. I'd also expect Rindell to get into the lineup before Hellickson, with one of Benn or Mete moving to the LD when Dahlstrom, Kral, or Kokkonen need a day off.

Leafs still need to cut some cap, and we will need a new #7 if Holl or Sandin are not there.

LW Orrin Centazzo – C Brett Budgell - RW Zach O’Brien
LW Brandon Kruse – C Ryan Chyzowski – RW Zach Solow
LW Keenan Suthers – C Jack Badini – RW Ryan Johnstone
10th C Todd Skirving
C Nolan Walker

LD Marshall Rifai – RD Michael Joyaux
LD Noel Hoefenmayer – RD Tommy Miller
LD Matteo Pietroniro – RD Brennan Kapcheck
LD ??? – RD James Melindy

G Dryden McKay - G Luke Cavallin

I think Kasper Larsen fills the last spot on the Growlers, but we should be fine for depth at all positions throughout the organization otherwise.

What's the story with Gogolev? I thought he had some upside
Not a good skater?

Is Brodie McConnell-Barker the future Soo Greyhound really need and want?

If you want a January 2006 Prospect to watch... this is your guy... Aron Kiviharju at eliteprospects.com

I doubt we are in position to draft him though.

We passed on his brother who was a 4th overall pick in the OHL. Selected Moldenhauer 2 picks before him.

He is not even in the top 3 from that Soo draft class. If you are going to suggest someone, at least suggest Brown, Miller, or Virgilio. They at least seem like they have legit NHL upside. McConnell-Barker was a 3rd round pick and will have a tough time cracking that team this year, and possibly even in his draft yet.

McConnell-Barker has the hyphenated name though. Could get him on a line with ZAR and NAK.

Been watching the soo closely for the last few years and this year the 06 McConnell-Barker has had a impressive showing in pre season games. Goal and assist in the first 3 games. He will need a year to develop into the OHL but may make soo team based on his play so far. I predict he'll be a top D in the Ohl in a couple of years. Has high IQ, quality skating, sees ice well but needs to work shot. Once he gets going he could be the next Cale Makar (heard it hear first).

The 04 McConnell-Barker will have a breakout year covid didn't help any ohl player in missing a year. Also he was buried on 3rd line till Dickenson got hurt. If he was on top ohl soo power play last year which was ranked #1 in the league he would have had at least 30 more points and drafted earlier. He will be over 80 points this year. Already 2 goals and 1 assist in 2 games as he sat out the 2nd game of preseason. Dubas will regret not picking him up when he had the chance was tired of media I suppose of taking another soo player.

Robertson is small, physically immature, had a very late birthday and has had some injury issues, plus Covid. Some unique circumstances

If he doesn’t make it this year OR next year, he might be into BUST territory, yes.

We all have to remember that prospects are on their own development time line, and it doesn’t need to align with fan expectations or desires. What will be, will be on its own time.

Robertson is pretty driven, I’d think he makes it at some point this year.
Unless you are marner, mathews, Nylander, McDavid and ect. You will need to learn to play without the puck and be defensively responsible. The star are given time to figure this out in the NHL.
Roberston for example he is a goalscorer but on our team it will be tough for him to play in the top 6. He needs to be air tight in those other areas.

If Hirvonen and Palola continue to build up chemistry, Hirvonen will be having a 40, or even a 50 point season - he has come a long way from last season.

I used to hate him for always just skating to the o-zone and shooting the puck right after crossing the blueline. Now that he has some maturity in his game, he actually tries to slow the game down and mostly makes great plays while doing so, it's really refreshing to see - the fact that HIFK has some great continuity in the team this year, makes the chemistry factor even bigger, as Hirvonen seems much more comftorable with the way everyone around him play.

Knocking on the door': Robertson confident he's ready to be full-time Leaf

The opportunity to finally crack the Maple Leafs' roster and becoming an everyday NHLer is there for Nick Robertson and the forward is confident that he has what it takes to contribute to the roster in an expanded role.

Usually comes from a lack of confidence. In Marner’s first camp with the Leafs, as soon as he got the puck, it was right back off his stick. The following year, he was holding onto it and working his magic like he was in Junior
