hard to believe Knies tonight has more points (3) than Tyler Boucher does all season (2). What a wild pick by Ottawa, who are normally a pretty good drafting team.

I can't wait to see what Knies can do at the world juniors
It will be interesting to see if their past 3 drafts will yield good results. Their picks seem to contrast what the leafs are doing.

PPG as a freshman in that program is pretty darn good eh? College players are always tough to gauge but the start by Knies jumps off the page.

The Leafs over the last 20 or so years have been awful at drafting from the NCAA/USHL. It would be nice to finally get a blue chipper from that league.

I haven't seen much of Kokkonen, but from what I've seen I would be surprised if he ever makes it as a regular in the NHL. Kind of weird to see people expecting that of him, he's more of a "there's a chance, but it's unlikely" type of case. That said, Niemelä and Rindell aren't much higher on that list. Niemelä's production so far this season is absolutely phenomenal(he leads the league in points, a 19-year old D!) but at the same time, he's smallish, and not exceptional in the offense. He just has good instincts, knows when there's open ice and takes it. I think it will be difficult for him to transition his game to the small rink and the bigger, faster opponents he'll face especially in the NHL. Rindell, well, it's still early. I'll have more of an opinion of him later in the season.
At the risk of being a Niemela cheerleader (I can be seen celebrating his goal at the 19 second mark of the video posting here)

I hope he's going to be in competition as our next generation top 2 defensemen. Similar timeline to Sandin's development, Rielly will be here for a while, but in a few years he will degrade, so pairings of Rielly/ Liljegren - Sandin/Niemela- Dermott/Kokkonen or Free Agents mixed in the bottom 2 will be pretty good in the future.

If you consider Sandin and Liljegren graduated, who is our 2nd best dman prospect after Niemela. Kokkonen? Hollowell? Kral? Rindell? Other?

Kral and Koster for me.

Kokkonen is probably most people's consensus next best though. 180GP in Liiga at only age 20. Rindell is another Liiga sleeper with 8pts in 4GP after getting traded to Niemela's team.

I often forget we have Amirov.

How would one rank our top 10 forward prospects?
My list kind of goes like this

1. Niemela
2. Amirov
3. Knies
4. Robertson
5. Abruzzese
6. Hirvonen
7. SDA
8. Steeves
9. Tverberg
10. Abramov

but below Robertson is massively in flux

It is either Kokkonen or Kral. I will always question Rindell's defensive ability, at least until he gets here and proves otherwise. Hollowell is getting scratched a lot right now, and is not very good. I still think the Leafs move him (like Kivihalme, who is equally bad), but worst case, both he and Kivihalme should not be back next year.

I would make a case of Villeneuve but he does not put up a ton of points, and then Koster is really the only other noteworthy defensive prospect we have right now. Fusco is underwhelming, we are likely letting O'Connell's rights expire this year, and Loponen is heading in that direction as well (although he has one more year to prove himself).

To those saying Kokkonen is only "good" on the PK, you need to watch him specifically on the PK. This guy always has his stick in the best position to block shots, and take away passing lanes all at the same time. His stick work is very Brodieesq like. Very very active stick, and he is simply never caught out of position. This whole notion of needing to be big and physical needs to go away, that is simply not the game anymore. Separating the puck from the other team and moving it is how defense is being played these days, and Kokkonen is phenomenal at this.

By all accounts, Kokkonen is a faster skater than Sandin. Sandin gets caught all the time due to pinches and trying for offence. Kokkonen doesn't get caught because he doesn't push for offense. Basically the same player with different views on the game. Offense vs. defense.

Hindsight is 20/20 but Tucker Robertson would have been a nice player to throw an ELC at before the OHL season started.

A completely random thought and observation but if the Marlies do make a coaching change in the near future, I wonder if Travis Green would fit as a Marlies head coach if he does get canned in Vancouver (seems to be going that way).

He gets to work in a high profile location while he waits for a NHL call again. He knows Toronto as he played here in his NHL days. He seems like a solid coach to me. He'd probably be a good mentor to Snowden or whoever else is here.
