Have we ever actually found out what has kept Amirov out for so long? Seemed like he was hurt...came back for a few games and then just gone for like 2 months lol

Thank god. As much as it has been nice seeing the progression of Knies, Tverberg, Niemela, Rindell...etc. Our 2 highest ranked prospects pre-season have been out with semi serious injuries all year. We really need to see them both back in action ASAP and developing.

I honestly think Rodian was due for a big campaign this year. Still a decent amount of time left, but if he shows that he can play in the KHL this year, with the expanded role he was expected to get, we may see him in NA sooner rather than later. Ideally he'd be ready this next coming season.

3 years of Rodian on ELC, and 2 years of Robertson on ELC could really allow us to compete for a couple of years. Provided they are ready of course.

Amirov - Matthews - Nylander
Robertson - JT - Marner
Steeves - Kampf - Kase
Bunting - Spezza - Simmonds

having those 2 ELC deals on the books next year would make a Campbell extension a lot easier to manage, and the expiry of Roberston's/Steeves' ELC's would also align with Mrazek coming off of the books. So we really could maintain the strong goaltending duo that we presently have.

Obviously this type of scenario requires 3 ELC players to crack the lineup on the left side next year, and they'd need to be ready to play on a consistent basis. But in all honesty, how much worse could Amirov be in comparison to Ritchie/Bunting? same with Robertson and Steeves. Yes losing Kerf would be a big loss IMO, but something will have to give to resign Soup.

Hell we could even bring Holmberg over to be our 13th Forward and have 4 guys rotating in and out for 3 LW positions.

Our Core group are no longer kids, they need to mentor the next wave. I really am hopeful that Amirov can make the jump to the NHL next year at the very least. It would make our "cap nightmare" far easier to navigate if he can play meaningful minutes for us.

I don't like how well Mercer is doing, making our Amirov pick look bad
No it isn't. So when Jarvis didn't make team Canada, does it make our Amirov pick look great? People need to stop over reacting to other players looking good and then saying it makes our decision look bad. Amirov if not for injury has looked really solid so far.

I know again it’s far away and anything could happen but does anyone think this year with it being a very deep draft, Dubas could trade back a bit and get 2 picks for either the first round pick or the 2nd round one?

Remember how Laine was a better scorer and player than Matthews?

Fun times....

It's honestly pretty weird how Laine was the new Ovechkin and Matthews was billed as a two-way 1C and here we are with Matthews not just being a better scorer than Laine but one of the best of the last decade. In retrospect, a lot more should have been made of an 18yo putting up 24 goals in 36 games in the NLA. Laine "merely" had 17 in Liiga. The WC MVP went to a lot of people's heads.

That has been his style in past drafts, so it is definitely a possibility.

Ya, that never made any sense to me. Roughly equivalent leagues, and Matthews smoked his league more than Laine did.

Where do you think Topi Niemelä would go in a re-draft?

He's starting to look like a steal in the 3rd round

Knies, Steeves and kral next year will be with the leafs.
In 2 yes amirov, kokkonen and Robertson

I'm not discounting these guys as players, but to expect two additional new D men on the Leafs, is quite the expectation. Maybe eventually, but keep in mind how long it's taken us to season Lilly and Sandin.

Yup. Kral could get a game or two this year with injuries, but I think theyd prefer to use Rubins in that role. Next season he's gonna have to fight two [better] guys in Niemela and Kokkonen for minutes, and potentially for the first callup due to injury.

There just doesn't seem to be a fit for Kral next year with 5/6 spots locked for years. Kokkonen i can't see as a full-time guy until 2024-25. Niemela probably the same timeline unless he comes over and Sandin's the AHL.

That's the thing. Muzzin and Brodie are signed until the end of 2023/24, Rielly until infinity, and Sandin and Liljegren look set to be here for years to come as well. Whether Dermott and or Holl are, is to be determined. But if even the latter two aren't, it leaves just one roster spot available for years to come. Sure, there is also #7 spot available. There is also the philosophical question of do we need/want someone with more physicality and size, because none of these guys are the answer to that question.

Having talent coming up is great, allows us to make trades, using either them, or they replace people we moved. But there isn't a lot of opportunity on this roster for these guys... unless they really excel, and push someone out the door, which would be absolutely fantastic.

We will need some currency, perhaps to trade for the rights to Jack McBain, if he doesn't intend to sign with the Wild. ;)

Honestly it's the number 6 spot that is open in the future. I'd say Rubins has the inside track to be that number 7 guy for the foreseeable future. All depends on him though, if he wants that role, or if he thinks he has more, in which case that could still be here.

I wonder if Kallgren keeps up this level of play, if they let him get an NHL game in the next time the Leafs have a back-to-back.

He was good in preseason and had a shootout performance that had me asking
WHO IS THIS GUY???

You often here management will keep giving chances to the guys they drafted. Woll was a 3rd round pick. Is this what is happening?

It looks to me that the better goalie at this moment is Kallgren with his .923. Coming off a .930 playoff with Vaxjo.

i think Steeves is certainly going to be a Leaf next year, and maybe Kral might get a game or 2 or operate as our 7D if Dermy and/or Holl depart. But he will also have to fight that out with Rubins likely.

As for Knies, I think its a bit early to bring him in. We could also use a bit of staggering in our ELC usage as well. Having him sign the year following or even after his junior year will help us remain competitive with lower AAV ELC deals. With other options like Holmberg, Steeves, Amirov, and Robertson able to play the LW side in the mean time, it just seems unlikely he will be a Leaf next year.

Needless to say, I think with the expected return of Soup combined with Lilly and Sandin bridge deals, we will likely have to utilize some ELC contracts next year. Given our lack of high end talent on the LW side, this really will open the door for those 4 guys I have listed above.

My guess is around 15-25, he might be the biggest riser in the entire draft class.

Today I think that honor might go to Carter Savoie although I don't think he would crack the 1st round. Really looking forward to seeing team Finland in the U20s. Too bad Tverberg won't be there. The Leafs are due for a real win outside of the 1st round and 2020 could be it.
