its super early. And we need to sign him to an ELC but this is exactly what we need. We need a blue chip goaltending prospect. I wanted Lindberg who went to pit. But we need to develop a 1 goalie.

Under 25.

blue chip C. Matty
2 star wingers. Check.
Good checking/depth wingers. Hopefully some of Robby. Knies. Amirov Anderson. Googlev tveberg mark. If 2 hit that’s huge.
If steeves can be a top 9 C and kampf is a checking c

With rielly. Sandin. Lilly. Niemela. That’s a good start.

A No1 goalie puts us in great shape.

The guy is also 6'05"

I only bring this up because he is a goalie and I don't care what people tell me size does matter when it comes to goalies

Not Leafs related but Sokolov got called up by the Sens and he's a player I don't understand why the Leafs didn't sign with an ELC back when he was at their prospect camp the year before he got drafted. Seemed like an easy decision to me.

I watched Sokolov the year before he was at our camp and he was one of the ugliest/slowest skaters I've ever seen. He probably didn't show enough at that camp to get a contract but then had a great year to get drafted in the second round as a 20 year old. I actually find it incredibly hard to believe he's now in the NHL but good for him, he's made some pretty wild improvement.

They made a similar mistake with Durzi and Hollowell. Had them both in camp and ended up waiting and using draft picks on them.

Translation:
Our forward Dmitry Ovchinnikov has been called up to the Russian Olipy national team! He will go there right after tonight's match.

I'm guessing this is for the World Juniors, not sure what Olipy means though.

This must be for the World Juniors. But regardless, him going to the WJC would be amazing. I honestly think that could be a bit of a coming out party for him. His speed and ability to make plays at that speed is a joke. He has shown an ability to dominate against his peers in the MHL. Granted this is widely known to be less competitive in comparison to any CHL league. But if he goes to the WJC, and is given an opportunity to showcase his stuff, it really would show us what we potentially have in him. I suspect he will show well. His skill level is off the charts IMO.

Might be a long shot, but any chance Peksa gets a look?

his MHL numbers are pretty solid this year. Second best GAA in the MHL

Based on his numbers and the fact he was drafted in the NHL, he should get a look, but I doubt it, he didn't get any camp invites over the summer for other U20 tournaments. I assume Yaroslav Askarov is a lock and then there is also Zakhar Vinogradov who is playing well in the VHL and was at the U20 camp for the Four Nations cup. Yegor Guskov was also ahead of him this summer but Peksa has better numbers this year.

I say talent over size no matter what position. There are lots of goalies 6'3+ that can't stop a beach ball. Saros is 5'11 and had a .927 sv% last year and should have been a vezina finalist. He has a .925 this year. Khudobin is 5'11 and has a had a very successful career posting many seasons above a .920 and carried his team to the cup finals. Guys like Quick and Lundqvist are considered undersized at 6'1 but have been among the leagues greats the last 15 years.

I wanted Dustin Wolf when he was still available in the 7th round a few years ago. Kid had multiple seasons in junior around a .930 sv%. Now to start his pro career in the AHL, he has a .925sv%. Meanwhile Woll who is 6'4 has yet to break .900. I will always take a flyer on a kid who has talent and has numbers to back them up over a bigger guy, hoping he can evolve.

these smaller goalies need to be able to play upright ...look at Hutch, once he goes into his crouch (which is always early) it looks like there is 2 feet over his shoulders to shoot at, he makes himself smaller than he even is. size is likely the reason Carolina dumped their young #1 and picked up Anderson, 'small' goalies just cat cut it in the long run.

Definitely. I didn't say Dubas specifically. I just meant the Leafs in general.

Meh, I am not concerning myself with the prospect decisions of guys from the past regimes... There were much bigger mistakes made than that.

Hutch is 6'3. Same as Campbell.

The point is that some of these guys are passed over in junior because of size even though they have numbers to back up their play and they still go on to have lengthy NHL careers. A lot of smaller goalies aren't even getting chances just because of their height. Like we pass on a guy like Wolf in the 7th who has had outstanding numbers and goes on to keep on having great numbers at the next level but instead we will take a bigger guy in the late rounds like Bouthillier who is 6'2, who has mediocre numbers in junior and hasn't improved since. Again, I take the talent first over size. Especially in the late rounds. How many big goalies have we drafted over the years and none have panned out. Sparks, Bouthillier, Bibeau, Woll(?) Scott (injuries) etc.

I doubt the reason the Canes moved on from Nedeljkovic was his height and probably has more to do with committing money to a guy who has been a proven starter and top 10 goalie in the league when they are in win now mode and contender status.

Those are very nice numbers for Peksa but those in a junior league. The other Russian goalie Akhtyamov put up numbers not far off those at the same age in a professional league last season (VHL). Akhtyamov is probably still the better prospect thus far although he isn't having a great year to date.

Peksa played again today and stopped 50 of 52 shots in a 3-2 shootout loss. He allowed 1 goal in 5 shootout attempts.
god I so desperately want to get excited about a goalie prospect.

I think I would be stoked about Peksa's performance maybe a year ago, but seeing how Artur's game has not translated at the next level is concerning given how great he was last year.

Maybe I am just a bit guarded lol. But hey, at least it's better than him sucking at the MHL level :sarcasm:
