I agree with you. When I say prospect, I mean anyone who has not established themselves in the NHL but has potential to do so. Regardless of age.
It pretty sad to see SDA at the bottom of this list. I really had high hopes for the kid. I guess unless you have really great vision like Marner, being a small, skilled, soft set up guy as opposed to scorer is a pretty high bar to overcome.

I'm pretty down on our prospects so far this year. The only guys who are really exceeding expectations are Niemela, Tverberg, and Steeves. Everyone else has been quite underwhelming or injured. I would put Knies, Holmberg, and Abruzzese in the category of guys who are meeting expectations.

Seems like we have 7 prospects that are legit and a whole lot of ifs and buts after that.

Amirov, Robertson, Niemela, Abbruzzese, Knies, Hirvonen and Kokkonen.

And not like those guys are blue chippers either.

There are a lot of quality guys after that too.

Our pool is in the middle of the road, and that is without Sandin and Liljegren included. If we had those two included, it would be among the best, especially for teams that are not hoarding prospects like Ottawa, Detroit, LA, Anaheim, etc.

Holmberg has a .67 PPG as a 22 year old 1st line player in the 3rd best league in the world, to go along with a 2.3 rel.CF% and 1.3 rel.FF%. Not to mention he won the Conn Smythe of the SHL last season when his team won the championship with 14 points in 14 games. He's a guy known for defense and transition play, and the offense has skyrocketed since the beginning of last season. He is absolutely worth putting in that group above as if he was undrafted he'd be a guy 32 teams would be lining up for right now.

Former Leaf property, Jesse Blacker is top 5 in KHL D-men scoring, with 21 points in 26 games...... Aaltonen is seventh in forward points scoring,

Plenty of AHL level guys in the top 10 of both D and Forwards scoring there.

With all the talk of Topi, watch this video that breaks down his game (posted on the 3rd), and get even more excited than you already are.

I couldn’t care less if his offensive game doesn’t translate to high-end output at the NHL level if his transitional defense ends up somewhere near Brodie’s level.

Love the breakdown but would have liked to see more shot analysis. IMO his ability to sneak shots through blocks is just as impressive as the activation.

If he can add power to his slapper it’ll change his offensive game. He uses it in Liiga but you can tell it’s underpowered.

Cracking our top 15 is still impressive, but he needs to develop his shot and his two-way game if he wants a chance.

Been low on him since junior but this is the first time where I genuinely see some sort of NHL future in SDA. In the games i've watched, he drives his line and is using his shot a lot more but not hitting the net/finishing. Also looks stronger. There's been times where my jaws dropped watching him dance other teams. Might be a stretch but his hands look elite at times against pros. Not sure why people are souring on him now.

Stylistically, he looks like a poor, poor man's Suzuki minus the laser shot and defensive acumen. Like you said, if he can develop the D game there's a future for him.

Hes doing what 3rd rounders do
Try to make the 4th line

lol then your expectations are WAY TO HIGH, so many of Dubas picks look like legit NHL players. Dubas is consistently hitting on SO MANY picks outside the first round right now that we are all spoiled

Look, we need to temper expectations a little bit. Sure, many of these prospects are doing well, exceeding their draft spots... but this is a numbers game, and there are only a very limited number of new spots open on the Leafs each year. If two or three of our current draft picks, outside of round one ever hit and become fulltime roster players in the NHL, that's absolutely fantastic. That's not a comment on the players, I don't know more than anyone else, it's just a reality of numbers.

If we have such quality, it just means those making it are better quality, and some marginal guys either won't, or will be traded to other teams for futures.

Rindell makes his Karpat debut today skating on the top pair. Niemela on the 2nd pair.
I don't know about you guys, but there is something exciting about 2 of your prospect defenceman playing on the same team even more so then forwards.

I don’t think my expectations are too high, it’s just a fact that our prospects have been disappointing as a whole this year. If they don’t improve each year then it seriously reduces their chances of making the NHL.

I would say the quantity of solid prospects is reason to get excited. It all comes down to asset management, and the more quantity we have, the more options for effective LT asset management. This is one area where I think Dubas has generally done well, but he has to stop pissing away our draft choices on ST needs - like a 3rd rounder for Dave Rittich?

Show your work.

Seriously, "as a whole" is a pretty wide reaching statement. Should be able to rhyme off more than half of our top 15-20 guys and show how they've disappointed relative to your expectations.

Edit: Will add my own.

From our pre season poll

1. Rasmus Sandin - 53.2% - Made the Leafs out of camp
2. Nick Robertson - 50.9% - injured, N/A
3. Timothy Liljegren - 56.9% - made the Leafs out of camp
4. Rodion Amirov - 90.6% - injured , N/A
5. Topi Niemela - 62.1% - shredding Liiga
So out of the top 5, 3 fantastic starts to the season, 2 injuries, no disappointments

6. Matthew Knies - 45.4% - strong start to freshman season
7. Roni Hirvonen - 61.1% - offensive stagnation (fair to call disappointing)
8. Mikhail Abramov - 47.5% - slow start to pro career (fair to call disappointing, but reactionary)
9. Mikko Kokkonen - 44.7% - steady eddie in Liiga
10. Veeti Miettinen - 49.4% - hasn't taken the step to dominance we hoped for (Fair to call)
this group has more of a case. No doubt we we were all hoping for more from Hirvonen/Abramov/Miettinen, but it's still early

11. Nick Abruzzese - 40.2% - killing it
12. Pontus Holmberg - 27.2% (tiebreaker - 57.1%) - not quite picking up where he left off, but well ahead of where he started last season, playoffs weren't a blip.
13. Dmitri Ovchinnikov - 27.2% (tiebreaker - 42.9%) - I'm not personally disappointed, disagreed with this placement and had low expectations
14. Semyon Der-Arguchintsev - 29.6% (tiebreaker - 53.8%) - not lighting the world on fire, but solid transition to pro NA play
15. Pavel Gogolev - 39.5% - big time slow start

For me, 1/4 disappointing, 1 that shouldn't have been there

16. Filip Kral - 57.6% - great camp, steady start with the Marlies, better than when he came over last season
17. Mike Koster - 48.8% - injured, but good start before hand
18. Alex Steeves - 17.2% (tiebreaker - 74.5%) - great rookie camp, fantastic start to season
19. Axel Rindell - 40.5% - can't comment, similar to Ovchinnikov for me
20. Artur Ahktyamov - 34% -disappointing

Again, maybe 1-2 out of five

21. Mac Hollowell - 23.1% - meh
22. Ty Voit - 26.5% - producing well and justifying the pick
23. Ian Scott - 33.3% - injured
24. William Villenueve - 39.4% (tiebreaker - 57.1%) - can't comment
25. Ryan Tverberg - 39.4% (tiebreaker - 42.9%) - killing it

This far down the list Hollowell/Scott/Villeneuve could be permanently healthy scratched and Voit and Tverberg would outweigh that.

Honestly his skating style and offensive instincts are eerily similar to Morgan Reilly in that highlight pack. I never drew that comp when I watched him at the WJC, maybe because he seems to pay more attention to his own end more. But there were some clips in that highlight pack where I thought I was watching a right handed Reilly
