It's interesting to do this without Sandin and Liljegren finally. My top 15 right now:
  1. Amirov
  2. Robertson
  3. Niemela
  4. Knies
  5. Kokkonen
  6. Abruzzese
  7. Hirvonen
  8. SDA
  9. Holmberg
  10. Tverberg
  11. Steeves
  12. Abramov
  13. Hollowell
  14. Kral
  15. Akhtiamov
HM: Miettinen, Rubins

My risers over the last year: Knies, Tverberg, Steeves, Abruzzese, Kokkonen
My fallers: SDA, Abramov, Hollowell, Miettinen

I just don't see the upside to Miettinen at the pro level. I like him though. Make or break AHL season for Kral and Hollowell, they both need to show another gear in their production and play.

I could see Rubins rising a lot this season in the rankings... the definition of a late bloomer player. I wouldn't be surprised if he was called up first.

I appreciate that he's 27, but no mention of Semyonov at all, who is the Marlies points leader, and playing C for them, with Ho Sang and Steeves... their most productive line.

I think Semyonov has looked good but it would be tough to include a 27 year old in a prospects list.

I feel like 24-25 years old is a strong cut off for a prospect ranking. Semyonov is good but I think what you see is what you get with him. A strong depth center. If you want him included in this, I'd put him probably between Hirvonen and SDA.

If you think he should be considered a prospect in this ranking, you're welcome to make your own list with your own criteria's.

Early season over reaction and thus top ten prospects:

my current prospect rankings are probably something like

  1. Topi
  2. Amirov
  3. Robertson
  4. Knies
  5. Abbruzzeze
  6. Kokkonen
  7. Hirvonen
  8. Holmberg
  9. Abramov
  10. Miettinen
HMs: Steeves/Kral/Tverberg

Damn Abruzzese at 5 and Niemela at 1?? Both having amazing starts and both moved up a tier for me too. I'd probably go:

1. Robertson
2. Amirov
3. Niemela
--
4. Knies
5. Kokkonen
6. Holmberg
7. Hirvonen
8. Miettinen
9. Abramov
10. Abruzzese

I’ve been high on Abruzzese for most of my lists, I really like him

He's a guy I just can't get a read on. He produced so well for two years before injury, but he's also old af and still not playing pro. Holmberg is .3 years older than him and is currently in his 4th year playing as a regular in the 3rd best league in the world. Steeves is .5 years younger than him and he's already out of the NCAA and playing top-6 in the AHL.

Not to mention the major surgery scares me as we have no idea what will happen to his body over a full season. Don't get me wrong, I love the way he plays and I do think he's got a strong shot at being a NHL player in some capacity, but he's probably the most boom/bust guy we have without him showing that he can transfer his game to pro.

So after a year off and way to early to go off pace, Voit and Kressler are pacing 30+ Goal/80+ Point and 20+ Goal/50+ Point seasons respectively.

Thoughts? Where do you slot them if that's where they sit at the end of the year?

My top 15 without Liljegren and Sandin:

Amirov
Robertson
Niemela
Knies
Kokkonen
Hirvonen
Holmberg
Abbruzzese
Miettinen
Steeves
Kral
Abramov
Tverberg
Koster
SDA

I expect Tverberg to crack my top ten soon and for Koster to do so as well. Koster is a very good two way defenseman with silky smooth skating and underrated puck skills. I think he carves out an NHL career of some sort even if I'm not sure it's with us. He's one of my favourites. Tverberg has been nothing short of a stud for UConn. He's got good speed, fine hands and a solid shot that can beat a goalie in tight and mid range. My favourite thing about him though is he combines really good skills for a seventh rounder with a very intense game. He's always physically active, hustles and is not afraid of going to the dirty areas. Knies looks very good every time I've seen him. He's not a burner but his skill level for a big guy is unreal. He also has a bullet shot with a release that kind of reminds me of Matthews a bit. If he gains even a step or two in his skating he's going to be an easy top six guy, maybe even top line. I also think Topi overtakes Robertson by seasons end and maybe Amirov if he comes back and plays worse.

I agree with this.

Ideally he has another massive year in the NCAA this season and signs with the Leafs once his season is over. Let him finish off the season with the Marlies (who will hopefully have figured their shit out by that point and are poised for a deep run).

Maybe he’s JT’s centre in a couple years?

I’m not gonna post a top 15 other than to say, I still really like the top 15 guys in the system.

I agree with all of this.

I think my rankings are pretty well identical to yours as well, with kral being a couple spots higher on your board. But overall I think this is exactly how our rankings are ATM, with Topi fastly emerging as our top prospect by years end.

Me too. I was convinced we were picking Debrincat at 31. It was too f***ing logical.

I remember having the draft on TV but for some reason the pick was made before the broadcast started. I remember looking at twitter on my phone thinking who the f*** is Yegor Korshkov.

God damnit.
I watched Debrincat live enough times to want Toronto to draft him. Of course they never did though. Pelech was another one I wanted, nope, same shit (probably different draft year). At least they got Dermott.

Topi really is something else. I loved his hockey IQ and transitional defense when we drafted him. I did not see this kind of offensive impact coming both in the Liiga or against his junior aged peers at the WJC.

Both are approximately near the 19-22 range using our ranking list.

Kressler has a high floor, but low ceiling. Bottom six most likely unless he can drastically improve either his playmaking or shooting. He’s by far our best pker prospect. He’s in the same tier as:
- ovchinnikov (both play pp, pk, and 5v5, but i like ovechkinov more because he attacks medium and high danger areas a lot more)

- schingoethe (he is a faster skater than last year, but still meh)

- i have a feeling he’s in the same tier but nowhere near as good as hirvonen (i don’twatch much liiga),

Voit needs to prove he can handle the physicality of the harder leagues. Higher ceiling, but large bust potential. He has a good one touch pass and if my memory serves me correct, his zone entries are good. He evades checks at the ohl level, but can he translate that to the nhl? His rookie camp appearance was odd as he didn’t show his elusiveness and kept running into bigger players. He’s in the same tier (though not as good as) as abruzzese (nick is better at commanding the pp though), sda (voit is faster, but sda’s one touch pass is better), abramov (abramov projects better at the moment),

So it's the strict definition of "prospect" then... that's cool. Thanks
I agree with you. When I say prospect, I mean anyone who has not established themselves in the NHL but has potential to do so. Regardless of age.

I'm reading (on local Twitter feed) that Kristians Rubins has been called up to Maple Leafs. Any chance he sees any ice-time or is this a paper move?

Dermott is day-to-day. Rubins is the 7th D and not playing tonight.

Akhtyamov just having an awful year in the VHL, now down to a 2.89 GAA and .892 SP through 18 games. Most goalies in Russia put up great stats so this is concerning.
