I hope some of these guys gets an opportunity to play with the Leafs

There is no reason why Petan Malgin should getvany nods when calling up players

Just give your players proper opportunity

Petan probably not anymore, but Malgin should be given an opportunity (if he is not traded before next year).

Really? Since when?

2018 I guess. Hollowell, Abruzzese are both. Holmberg, Durzi, Kral and Rindell were OA and under 6" but not tiny. Two of these look like maybe legit NHL prospects so far and except for Durzi, not high picks. I would like to know how much of this is Dubas driven and how much is the scouts exercising their knowledge. KD would hardly have watched any players outside of the first round so it isn't like he is really driving those specific selections. Is he saying he wants older guys closer to jumping to the pros? Go small or go home?

He picks for IQ. He is not going to draft a large player who is the best player. People can not like that strategy, but that is a strategy that has worked for teams more often than not.

There have been a number of guys who have grown to 6'0"+ anyways. Or have grown from 5'9" to 5'11" or something.

Yeah he picks some smallish ( I guess that means 6 feet and under) but the other was talking about signings referring to Beaucage.

This is my end of the year prospect breakdown. I will start at the bottom at #20 and make my way to the top. There will be a separate post for every prospect. I will try to make one daily. By my criteria, Liljegren and Sandin are still prospects so they will be included in this one. I will also be revealing who I feel took the biggest step, dropped the most, and most underrated prospect and so on. I will bold the new info I added.

#20. G. Jospeh Woll
LY Rank: 10
Overview
Woll is the 2nd and last goalie in the top 20 in the system. You could make the case he could be higher as he has more upside, then the few of the players ahead of him, but I think 10 makes sense. Woll was drafted in the 3rd round at 62nd overall in 2016. He spent 3 years in Boston College where he is was a solid goalie, and improved his stats every year going from .913 to .915, and then .919 in his final season. His efforts were rewarded with an ELC. Woll started his pro career with the Marlies this season, and even posted a shutout in his pro debut. Unfortunately, this was one only one of very few highs as Woll really struggled in his first pro season. He had a 3.75 GAA with a .880 SV%. This season Woll showed a little more improvement, but was plagued again by the same 2 things like his rookie season. Allowing soft goals and the team being a complete mess in front of him. There is still time for him to turn it around, but next year is a big season for him.

Statistical Analysis
As mentioned, Woll was a good goalie in Boston College. His numbers were consistent every year with improvement as well. Woll had a slow start in his final season, but really bounced back afterwards and was more like he was in the previous 2 seasons. This season Woll went to the Marlies and had a shutout in his 1st game, and was the 1st rookie goalie in Marlies history to post a shutout in his 1st game. The rest of the season didn’t go well as he battled consistency all year, and was frankly lit up in a few games. Sheldon Keefe however raved about him all season even in tough games. Some of his performances weren’t even on him. There were many games where the team in front of didn’t show up, and that’s not good for any goalie. However .880 is .880, so Woll needs to be a lot better as well. This season he had a decent start but then battled consistency and bad goals, with again the team not showing up for him in front. The good thing he is was better in the final stretch so that leaves things for optimism.

Goalie talent evaluation? Not my thing, but I can give some information on Woll having watched him.
He is a solid fundamental technical goalie. He has good abilities all around the net, and doesn’t swim which is a good thing. His movement in net are not overdone and tracks the puck well. His rebound control I felt is also fine. Honestly thinking about it, this poor performance in his 1st season came as a surprise. However even though he was better his second season; the bad goals where they go through him remain.
One of the biggest things Woll is known for is working on his craft. He studies video on his game, and trying to see what he can work on. He is a big student of the game. He goes the extra mile in terms of preparedness and learning. Keefe couldn't say enough good things about Woll from his time with the Marlies.

My future projection: The first 2 seasons were disappointing, but it’s tough to evaluate Woll when the team is very rarely good in front of him. With that being said, the next season is important. Even though I am down on him, I feel he will figure it out.

NHL Player? Yes, but goalies are goalies, so we’ll see.

Are we gonna get a thread about the draft/draft prospects put up soon? Or am I just blind? I haven't really looked too much into the draft this year since we got 3 picks but I like to see others who have and look up players they like.

There is a thread, it is just not stickied... So it gets caught up with the dozens of threads about shooting people to the moon.

What’s the point? Dubas traded all our picks away at the deadline

He is better than last year. Still gives up bad goals but if he had even a semi-respectable defense in front of him he is likely 2 full percent better than his current save percentage (that is how bad the Marlies defense was).

Not counting on him being a starter, but he could be a 1B or a good backup.

I know the defense was a complete tire fire, but he rarely seemed to show that ability to keep the boys in games. Something we see a lot from in Freddy when he was the starter with the Leafs. I think a lot of goalies look great in good defensive structures. For example, the NYI have not had a bad goaltender for the last 3 seasons under Barry Trotz. In fact they have even taken on somewhat reclamation projects in Lehner and Griess and propelled them into legitimacy. I wouldn't necessarily write Woll off because he does have the pedigree, but he really just looked lost at times. This season was the deepest I got to look into his games, and I have to say he just didn't look great. Confidence is everything though, and maybe he just needs a team to play in front of him to realize that he can in fact play. You're absolutely right, next year is a bit of a shit or get off the potty year for him.

I really think the Leafs are going to look to draft a goaltender this year. I know they don't have many picks, but I expect them to address this in some fashion this year. As it stands, goaltending prospect quality is very clearly our biggest organizational deficiency. We have about 5 C+ to B- level Goaltenders, with maybe the most promising being Artur Aktyamov, who as luck should have it is likely the furthest away from NHL action.

nice post, look forward to reading the rest

I wouldn't read too much into his numbers this year. I watched pretty much all games in the last half of this shortened season where Woll got a ton of starts but that Marlies roster was absolute garbage and Moore's was awful as well. I had myself wondering every game why I was even watching. There was just way too many games where the team was giving up cross ice plays for onetimers and back door plays. Plus no one covering their man on rebounds. In a lot of instances Woll was making the first save and didn't have a chance to get to the rebound.

Having said all that, we can still evaluate how he looked in those games. I found he slowed his game down quite a bit this year compared to last. Not as many scramble plays. I was disappointed in the fact that Scott looked more solid in his one game in the AHL than Woll even though he has 2 less years of development under his belt. Woll Also really needs to work on playing the puck. Even though I thought he looked better this year and the team was crap, he still has that tendency to give up goals he shouldn't. He also needs to come up with more saves on blind plays through traffic from the point. For a guy his size and with his technique he shouldn't be giving up as many goals as he has on those.

In a lot of instances Woll was making the first save and didn't have a chance to get to the rebound.
For sure. I saw a bunch of this. But I also saw plenty of opportunities where Woll burped it back out onto the lady's tee's for an easy tap in. It is really hard to completely evaluate his play given the atrocity that was the Marlies this year, but there was plenty in his game that left question marks. Rebound control being one of them. Steering the shot into the corners is a massively undervalued skill that Woll seemed to struggle with. Not to mention I really felt he struggled tracking the play. Maybe that's just me, but I can remember a handful of cross seam passes for goals where Woll was no where close to making a save, and it always stemmed from him not tracking the play initially. Those passes occur all the time in the show, but the finishes are just that much better and more accurate. If he is struggling to read the play in the A, it will only get worse at the NHL level.

Again, hard to be completely critical of him seeing as though he had zero help in front of him, but he also didn't help himself at times. I was really hopeful that Woll would come out hot this year, we desperately need some "close to NHL action" promise in the cage. Woll, Scott, VV, and Erik Kallgren all seem like a bit of long shots at this point.

The Isles defensive structure definitely helps but they also hired Mitch Korn around the same time iirc. He is arguably the best goalie coach in the league.

It will be very nice to draft and build a goalie in house. I look at teams that won stanly cups they have won it goalies they drafted

Fleury pittsburg
Bennington blues
Thompson and Rask Boston
Vaislievsky Tampa
Crawford Chicago
Quick in LA
Holtby Washington

All goalies drafted by their teams

Tim Thomas started his career with Boston and so did Rask. But you are correct

I also forgot to add Matt Murray to the list from Penguins

None th less, the list is significant of how many stanly cup winners used their own drafte goalies

I don't mind drafting and developing a goalie ourselves and I use to think that'd be the way to go, but now I think trading for a good goalie or signing one is probably the better course. Looking at some of the younger goalies in the NHL most still take at least several years to develop if not longer so if the Leafs are looking for a decent goalie right now, waiting for our prospects to get better isn't the immediate answer.

Woll was drafted in the same year as Matthews and yet he still looks like he has a ways to go before he might be ready to get a shot with the Leafs unless he dramatically improves. So drafting and developing our own goalie to become a starter would be nice, but its a long term project which the win now Leafs probably don't and can't wait for.

Drafting a goalie would make sense if your organization was a finely tuned draft and development machine and some years you had an extra high pick to get it done.

Problem with Toronto is we've gone down the old mortgage the future route through big ticket acquisitions, contract dumping and ill fated rentals over the past five years which has emptied out a huge number of picks and prospects who could be used to fill roster spots and now we see gaps in draft classes beginning to pop up.

Circumstances have not helped the progression of guys like Sandin, Liljegren and Robertson, and behind Amirov it feels like the more recent draft classes are stocked with players who have no obvious use in rolse to support the core group.

Trading away picks, while not amazing, had a lot less to do with it than the fact that Hunter netted us practically nothing out of the 2015-2017 drafts outside of Marner, Dermott, Liljegren, and Matthews (and I guess Grundstrom since he was moved for Muzzin). That was despite having 27 picks in that 3 year span (14 of which were within the top 95 picks of the drafts). Most of the other picks have flat out busted by now, with Woll, Scott, and Brooks being the only ones with any sort of reasonable promise remaining (+ Korshkov and Timashov if you count guys who are now out of organization).

4/27 is inexcusable, especially when 2 of those 4 were top 5 no-brainer picks and the lowest of the entire bunch was a 34th overall pick in a stacked draft. Even 7/27, which is what we get if all of Scott, Woll, and Brooks to turn out, is subpar. The only saving grace has been adding a bunch of free wallets like Holl, Zaitsev, Mikheyev, Moore, etc. over the years to make up for it.

Compare that to the past few years where Robertson, Sandin, SDA, Durzi, Hollowell, Kral, Abramov, and Holmberg have already made it further than most of the prospects we've drafted in 2015-2017, and we've got a number of others who look extremely promising (Kokkonen, Abruzzese, Koster, Niemela, Hirvonen, Miettinen, Villeneuve, etc.). We don't know if they make the NHL yet, but at least they are making it to the AHL. Out of the 27 picks we've had, only half (14) were even good enough to earn an ELC. 8/15 in 2018 and 2019 already have an ELC, and that excludes Abruzzese, Kokkonen, and Koster. Outside of Stotts in the 3rd round, it is looking like the guys who are not progressing amazingly well are the 7th round picks (Loponen, Kizimov, and Bouthillier). It's too early for most of the 2020 guys at this point, especially since many of them are NCAA bound.

To conclude: Number of picks is important, but it doesn't matter if you are busting on the majority of them anyways. Having only 3 picks in 2021 is not great, but I guess Dubas and Co. are not comfortable with the crop and that makes it the best time to have 3 picks (if there is a best time).
