Interesting deal proposed on the trade rumours board.

Couture at $4.5M

for

1st
Alex Kerfoot
William Villenueve

I think I'd be happy with that trade.
And the ToskaLOL trade bites us in the ass AGAIN. First we lose out on the guy by making that deal in the first place (okay, technically it was Eller taken with our pick but whatevs). Then we trade ANOTHER 1st round pick to get him back. Lord, will it never end?:banghead:

That being said...that is good deal. I'm in!

EDIT: Hold the phone! I take it back. Couture is 33 with 4 1/2 years left on the deal. Even at 4.5, that's a pretty penny to be paying a guy who'll be 39 in the last year of said contract. Plus, CapFriendly says he has a Modified, 3 team only NTC. And he's got no signing bonuses left on those 4 years, so we couldn't even peddle him to some cash poor cap floor team (*cough* ARIZONA *cough*) if we needed to dump him. So with that...I'm now out.

If Niemela earns a spot out of camp next year do you give it to him even if it means losing an asset like Timmins to waivers?

In theory, give it to the player that earns it, imo.

If Niemela plays better than Timmins and he makes our team better, then the spot should be his.
BUT...
Thinking longer term, what will probably happen is Timmins gets the spot due to waiver status and Niemela is the first man up when an injury happens, to help maintain depth (which is reasonable)

Niemela will probably get the Robertson treatment. He doesn’t need waivers so he’s going down, even if he is better than Timmins. But I doubt that happens.

I still can’t believe we got Timmins. Someone in Arizona must not like him because how was he not playing there

Players don't get a chance under conditions that they can thrive, often do elsewhere. We were the beneficiaries this time. Look at Barabanov. Turns out he's a decent NHL guy, but we didn't see anything from him here, as he had people blocking him.

You’re right. There’s a long list for every team. Marchment, Barabanov probably the two most noticeable in recent memory for us.

Nick Ritchie, too

There is some truth to this though... he found a place that is best for him to "excel". A team devoid of much talent, where his complete lack of speed doesn't matter. It's the best fit for him. This is part of team building too... we talk about bringing in players, but we don't know if they'll fit with us... I'm not even sure how to judge that to be honest. Marginal upgrades, might not be upgrades at all, if they don't find a way to fit.
