So the Leafs have quite a few prospects succeeding in the AHL and have even more on the way in the minors, college and overseas, and yet the Leafs have nothing?
I didn’t say nothing but it’s thin. We don’t have cheap, elite talent and nothing to replace Tavares. We also need a big defensive dman. We have holes that need filling.

What top teams have elite prospects waiting to replace their elite players? For where we have been drafting the last 5 years our prospect pool is great.

I think your expectations are completely out of whack. What top teams, consistently at the top, could you say have drafted elite talent? I mean, look at their recent picks and could you realistically say any of them have drafted elite talent?

That's because a majority of our prospects are 21 and under. It's unrealistic to think players that age to be playing in the NHL on a top team. Especially ones that aren't top 10 picks.

Holmberg has been a solid contributer so far. Robertson was getting reps before injury. Hollowel filled in nicely for his 6 games with injuries. Kral as well in his 2 games. Knies will likely be a huge addition this year for the playoffs if he signs after his college season. It's not like we haven't seen any prospects getting NHL games.

In the next 2 years we could be seeing Steeves, SDA, Villeneuve, Woll, Anderson, Abruzzese, Minten, Tverberg, Niemela and Hirvonen all playing games in the NHL or even being regulars. Maybe even Kokkonen and Abramov as long shots.

Amirov may have been playing for the Leafs this year if not for having brain tumor shortly after being drafted.
I know man. I was pointing out to the guy that the Leafs have lots of potential players that could make an impact, more so than many other teams in my view. You 100% misunderstood my response.

Marlies win 7-5.
They trailed pretty much all game and 4-2 in the third. They tied it 4-4. Rochester took the lead again and Marlies tied it again, and Abruzzese scored with 9 seconds left to take the lead. He also added 2 assists
Anderson goal and 2 assists
Hoffenmeyer goal and assist
Villeneuve goal
Kokkonen and Abramov assist
Woll 27 saves.
Shaw with a 5 point night
Shots were tied at 33
How has Kokkonen looked

From the 2020 draft, the Leafs have 2 players who have been playing against men for 4 years.
Also a couple college players who're finishing their 3rd. year?

Be interesting to see if any of them get any minutes with the Marlies/Leafs this year.

I'm guessing it'll be next year, and the college kids might go full term.

Tverberg (hearing Muppets in my head) will be 21 this month.

5'8" 145lbs.... Maybe he can contribute at the ECHL level, but I don't see much of a future for him above that.

I’m going to be brutally honest. Of the 5ish games i have seen of uconn, i did not know this guy existed. If anything, i thought the other 5th year, justin pearson, was a lot more noticeable.

Nicky Bobby number of games by season:

2017-18 - 62
2018-19 - 59
2019-20 - 50
2020-21 - 27
2021-22 - 38
2022-23 - 17

I love this guy's fearless playing style but he needs to change something, clearly his body can't handle it. Hope he's fine for training camp.
I’m not convinced his body can’t handle it. It may just be bad luck.

On this note, Wheeler is releasing his ranking of each team's prospect pool counting down day by day. So far:

32. Colorado
31. Tampa
30. Boston
29. Pittsburgh
28. Vancouver
27. Islanders
26. Florida
25. Washington
24. Ottawa

Ottawa has done poorly on drafting or maybe it’s the player development part?

Moreso terrible managing. Their prospects have developed well to a certain degree. From Tkachuk to Stutzle to Batherson to Norris, Chabot, Sanderson, etc. They might be missing a superstar but they have more than enough top end players to be a playoff team.

Their team has been terribly managed though and their supporting cast is pretty bad. Coaching has been subpar as well. Their recent ranking is a mix of a lot of graduations and trading a bunch of top picks for veterans, which has not good well.

Also while Sanderson looks good early in his career...Chabot looks to be just kind of bad. Creates a massive hole in their defense when the building block they were counting on for the defense actually sucks and you have already committed to him long term and all of a sudden need that much more from Sanderson.

Gotta feel for Nick at this point. Injuries are part of the game, but he's had a careers worth of injury in his first 3+ years of pro hockey. It was always the risk with a player of his size. To his credit he has built up his strength as best he can, but he tends to play a lot bigger then he actually is and it can get him into trouble. I love his compete level, and his willingness to go into the dirty areas to hunt pucks, but if he cannot protect himself in the process he will need to adapt the way he plays. Afterall, the best ability is availability.

NIck's got a top 5% release and shot by NHL standards, and he has above average vison and creativity with the puck on his stick. His speed doesnt hurt or help him, but his strength on the puck continues to be a bit of an issue. Again, to his credit, he has come leaps and bounds from when he first turned pro with respect to his strength on the puck. Even last season, he spent at least 10+ times/game on all 4's, picking himself off the ice with even the slightest of contact. He improved immensely in that regard this season.

The one thing I have always noticed with Nick, is that he is far too busy away from the puck. He never lets the play come to him, and it prevents him from finding the quiet areas of the ice. It's almost as if he is trying to do too much. Nick will most likely never be a player who drives play, or is even expected to. He needs to get lost in the play, and become available more. All good goal scorers do this. If you Iso-cam Auston he is one of the very best at this in the world. So many times will we hear announcers say, "how do you leave a guy like that so wide open" when talking about Auston, and it's not a fluke.

I want to say every one of Nicks injuries have come as a result of his play along the boards, and not anticipating or bracing for contact the way he should be. Part of that lack of anticipation is because of Nick wanting to do too much. He wants to be first on that puck, he wants to play in the hard areas, but sometimes you need to play with the cards you're dealt. I understand it's unfair to keep referencing Auston with respect to Nick, But how many times have you seen Auston willingly avoid contact in the corners, allow the opposition to gain possession, only to use his legs and active stick to strip the puck away almost instantaneously. Of course Auston is one of the best player in the world at that as well, but even a guy like Kerfoot understands that sometimes you are not in a position to make a physical play on the puck.

Nick has all the talent in the world. I still have hopes for him as his shot is legitimately a difference maker. Or at least should be. But he needs to adapt the way he plays IMO. These injuries are equal parts him not protecting himself and bad luck. But as I've said with Nick since the day we selected him, this kid wants it more than anyone. That drive is hard to come by. Still such a young kid, and he'll have plenty of opportunity to make the lineup in years to come. I just hope all of these scars are building a bit more of a case to adapt his game overall
