Gotta feel for Nick at this point. Injuries are part of the game, but he's had a careers worth of injury in his first 3+ years of pro hockey. It was always the risk with a player of his size. To his credit he has built up his strength as best he can, but he tends to play a lot bigger then he actually is and it can get him into trouble. I love his compete level, and his willingness to go into the dirty areas to hunt pucks, but if he cannot protect himself in the process he will need to adapt the way he plays. Afterall, the best ability is availability.
NIck's got a top 5% release and shot by NHL standards, and he has above average vison and creativity with the puck on his stick. His speed doesnt hurt or help him, but his strength on the puck continues to be a bit of an issue. Again, to his credit, he has come leaps and bounds from when he first turned pro with respect to his strength on the puck. Even last season, he spent at least 10+ times/game on all 4's, picking himself off the ice with even the slightest of contact. He improved immensely in that regard this season.
The one thing I have always noticed with Nick, is that he is far too busy away from the puck. He never lets the play come to him, and it prevents him from finding the quiet areas of the ice. It's almost as if he is trying to do too much. Nick will most likely never be a player who drives play, or is even expected to. He needs to get lost in the play, and become available more. All good goal scorers do this. If you Iso-cam Auston he is one of the very best at this in the world. So many times will we hear announcers say, "how do you leave a guy like that so wide open" when talking about Auston, and it's not a fluke.
I want to say every one of Nicks injuries have come as a result of his play along the boards, and not anticipating or bracing for contact the way he should be. Part of that lack of anticipation is because of Nick wanting to do too much. He wants to be first on that puck, he wants to play in the hard areas, but sometimes you need to play with the cards you're dealt. I understand it's unfair to keep referencing Auston with respect to Nick, But how many times have you seen Auston willingly avoid contact in the corners, allow the opposition to gain possession, only to use his legs and active stick to strip the puck away almost instantaneously. Of course Auston is one of the best player in the world at that as well, but even a guy like Kerfoot understands that sometimes you are not in a position to make a physical play on the puck.
Nick has all the talent in the world. I still have hopes for him as his shot is legitimately a difference maker. Or at least should be. But he needs to adapt the way he plays IMO. These injuries are equal parts him not protecting himself and bad luck. But as I've said with Nick since the day we selected him, this kid wants it more than anyone. That drive is hard to come by. Still such a young kid, and he'll have plenty of opportunity to make the lineup in years to come. I just hope all of these scars are building a bit more of a case to adapt his game overall
