The article makes him seem like TJ Brennan, but Hoefenmeyer has more developmental resources. It will probably be 2-3 years of development if he actually makes the nhl. Still a good pickup though since all except 2 guys made the ahl (liljegren and McGregor).

Hard to write a 23 year old off for sure. He'll just need to keep making strides. But he could be a late bloomer like Holl was in terms of making the NHL.

Marlies win 4-2.
Abramov with a goal
Abruzzese 2 assists
SDA, Villeneuve, Rifai and Ellis with an assist
Woll 36 saves on 38 shots. Marlies were outshot 38 to 33.
SDA left the game and didn't return

Sens started playing dirty in the end, and Marlies were just sticking up for themselves, yet somehow Sens get the PP's including a 5 on 3 in the end, which they scored that they celebrated as if it meant something. Moore as he should have was complaining to the refs how Sens got the PP's. He after the game while walking off had another word with the officials. Feel bad for Woll and the team that their PK allowed a goal that the refs gifted to the Sens. Marlies PK has been terrific lately too

Here is the second scrum. How do the Marlies end up a man short here which made it a 5 on 3?

Moore named head coach for the North Division at the all star game. Deserved honours. I am highly critical of him but he should be there. Good work so far. I'm still not sold on him but he's done a good job.
Despite losing defenceman and not having one of his main goalies almost all year, he's held it in.

Are there any players on the Marlies that deserve an ELC?
It would likely be difficult to keep Hoefenmayer around again next year without the ELC. Someone is going to give him an NHL deal if he keeps this up. Nobody else though.

Rifai was probably the favourite coming into the year, and he's been solid, but he maybe ends up on the McMann path heading into next season. Starts the year on an AHL deal and maybe builds towards the NHL deal.

AHL officials make it really hard to watch the league. i watched the game before and they were awful.

Pretty much Rifai and Hoefenmayer, and neither would be huge losses overall. Another one year AHL contract for Rifai to let him earn an ELC is probably the right move. Hoefenmayer could get an ELC if we think he has value as an AHL offensive defenseman.

The main one was Petruzzelli, who has struggled since getting that ELC but has earned one. Cavallin is another one who is trending in that direction and is already under contract for next year.

Even in terms of guys who should get another AHL contract, I am not seeing too many:

- O'Brien and Budgell will likely get AHL contracts for the Growlers again.
- Slaggert is worth another one year deal.
- Chyzowski has sucked in the AHL but he was given a 2 year AHL contract, a good number of opportunities with the Marlies, and plays a grinding style of game. He may be given another year like an Elynuik was, or may be let go like Brazeau was. Probably depends on alternatives we can bring in.
- I would give Tommy Miller another year. No offensive upside, but he has been a very solid stay-at-home RHD. I think he could be a solid full time AHL depth option next year.
- Don't really care about any of Joyaux, Hellickson, Pietroniro, or Kapcheck. They are all in their mid-20's now and while they have been solid ECHL players, they do not have much of a future with the Marlies. Get a new, younger crop on defense and dump all of them unless you value them as mentors for guys with higher upside.
- Johnstone has been solid as a 4th liner, but as a 96', he is getting old and should probably pursue European options for more money.
- Solow and Centazzo have done well in the ECHL but with Voit and Kressler coming in, do they really have a job with the Marlies next year? Both can probably find better jobs in Europe or with other AHL teams, because they are too good for the ECHL but may not be good enough for the Marlies.
- Walker, Suthers, Kruse and Badini haven't even done all that well in the ECHL so they will be easy to replace. Growlers can offer them an ECHL contract if they think they are worth keeping.
- McKay is already under contract for next year but has been absolutely awful for the Growlers. Never really had much hope for him but figured he would at least be a good ECHL starter considering how stacked the Growlers are. Nope, but at least Cavallin has stepped up big time. McKay can just be an ECHL backup for Cavallin or whoever we bring in to replace him as Growlers starter next year, because the only thing stopping Cavallin from being in the AHL next year is a Woll/Petruzzelli/Hildeby/Kallgren log jam.

AHL officials make it really hard to watch the league. i watched the game before and they were awful.

To be fair, this is exactly what a lot of Leafs fans want... And the AHL is more into that old school type of hockey vs. the NHL.

Oh boy...

The apparently gave it to Pietronrio for roughing. I was guessing it was that or Rafai getting the extra shot in at the end, far left of screen.
Either way, suuuper soft call.

Literally your guy is involved in a two-on-one (so you're not even third man in), and the linesman is already there tackling the three guys down, and you go in stick your arms in to help guide them down, AND the ref is literally two feet away watching it with a front row seat, and you get called for roughing. Woof.

We don't have a WJC thread but watching Bedard...please don't let him come into our division...please lol
Please no to the Habs or Ottawa especially. Let Vancouver get him (blah that would suck too) but if this guy ends up with the trojan condom or toilet seat on the chest of his NHL jersey i'll be very upset

I think it was Minten that talked about being a Canucks fan growing up and looking up to Bo Horvat.

You can really see it in his game and maybe best case scenario for him. Their numbers at the same age are very similar.
I get very strong Horvat vibes. Easily the first player that comes to mind when I think of Minten's ceiling. If he does reach that level that will be one hell of a selection in the 2nd round.

I was not overly sold on the selection at the time it was made, but it didn't take long to notice why the Leafs loved him so much. The kid is highly intelligent and didn't even begin playing tier 1 hockey until he was 14 years old. If I am not mistaken he is a classically trained pianist and that took a large portion of his extracurricular time away as a youth. He didn't even start dedicating himself to the sport until his bantam draft year. So his ascension to where he is now is remarkable to say the least. Especially when you consider the hundreds of thousands of dollars parents spend in Canada to put their kids in the best spots to be seen and train prior to their junior careers. Fraser, although growing up in one of the most affluent areas of the country, seemingly didn't even consider hockey to be a potential career until 14.

His skillset as it stands is highly projectable to become an NHL player. He has the frame and defensive awareness to become a very solid bottom 6 forward at worst IMO. But there is a level of untapped potential there that we are already starting to see glimpses of.

Is it concerning that the majority of his production comes on the PP? of course. But if I am not mistaken he is playing a secondary role on this Blazers team. Even with Stankoven being out of the lineup at the WJC, Minten was still slotted as the 2nd line centre last night as per instagram. So he is making the best of his opportunities to produce when they come. That said, I've not watched any Blazers games this season, and I am basing my entire opinion on what I've read. Sounds like he is struggling to get his shot off 5v5 as there is less time and space. SO it's something he'll have to work on if he wants to take that next step. But again, only 4.5 years of top level hockey under his belt, I really don't think this kid is anywhere near where his potential could be.

Does anyone know why Fraser Minten wasn't picked for Team Canada?

I mean his team mate Bankier is with the exact type of production.

Does Fraser lack foot speed ?

He didn't make the team because he's 18. Pretty sure Bedard and Fantilli are the only forwards younger than 19. The 9th overall pick wasn't even invited to camp.

Yup.. Add Korchinski and Shane Wright but yea.

Minten should get a shot next year.

Mateychuk/Savoie/Geekie/Pickering/Lamoureux are all 1st rounders who were not invited.

Bingo.

this has always been a 19 year old tournament. Typically speaking the more 19 year old players you bring, the better your team will be. It's still early, but you can kind of see this being the case for the USA. They brought 10 kids with a 2004/2005 birth year in comparison to Switzerland's 6, and Finland's 7. It may not sound like much, but that extra year's experience is so massive for a lot of these kids. It might be a contributing factor to USA "stumbling" out of the gate and Switzerland's "hot start"

Obviously smaller hockey nations don't really have the depth to take age into consideration, and often times their competitiveness in this tournament varies year to year as a result. But Hockey Canada has always taken this approach and it's probably why we are one of, if not the most consistent nation in terms of medaling. USA has got a really good thing going with their USNDTP, but it really lives and dies by that program. It has really paid off in recent years, so if they end up having an off year, it's really not the end of the world. That is a nation on the rise for hockey.

Minten realistically never had a chance at making this roster given Hockey Canada's historical selection process. It's a relatively proven formula for Hockey Canada, so who are we to judge. This is a really strong Canada roster. For Minten to even be involved at any level of Hockey Canada at 18 as a 2nd rounder is good sign IMO. Even if that was just a summer camp. It should bode well for his chances on making next years tournament.
