Hirvonen's team was in the Spengler cup. He played 2 of their 3 games. Made a nice pass for a primary assist on the tying goal in 3rd period of the QF but then took a 4 minute high sticking penalty(that had 5 and a game for cross checking to the face potential) that the opposition scored on so they're out.

It's kind of funny, but in watching the World Juniors, and the game tonight between Germany and Austria, I've enjoyed watching one of the D. He made some excellent plays tonight, and at times really stands out. He's not going to be a flashy guy, 6'2" RD.

Some of the scouting reports...

Mature and well-rounded defender who processes the game at a high level. More substance than flash but projects as a reliable top-four NHL defenseman.

When a 17/18-year old player is 6’2”, 187 pounds and finds himself playing 15-20 minutes a night - and sometimes more - in a league as strong and established as the Swiss NL, he’s going to be getting the attention of the NHL community one way or another. Throw in his righty shot and offensive inclination as an adept-skating, transitional defenseman, and that player will rarely be seen as anything other than a top 90 option in the draft. His rise to notoriety is something we at McKeen’s followed with an asterisk already last season, when his club played in the Swiss SL (editor’s note: where Brennan Othmann and Mason McTavish were busy cutting their teeth while the OHL was shut down several seasons back) and the 17-year-old quietly, yet impressively, put up 1-10-11 numbers accompanied by a +16 over a 27-game span. He was then naturally part of Austria’s WJC outfit this past summer and chipped in nicely with two assists and an even +/- rating over four contests, which isn’t easy in light of the herculean task that his nation faces at the WJC.

You go to this mock draft... and yup, they have us picking him, which I'd be thrilled with, if it happens.

Niemela assist today.
Kloke had an interesting comment on Niemela in his Liljegren article yesterday. He said if Leafs will stash him in the AHL and follow the Liljegren pathway, or if the Leafs deem him good enough to start in the NHL.
This isn't the first time Kloke has mentioned this either. It makes you think the Leafs are thinking about this. Niemela is also ahead defensively than Liljegren was at the same age. With a good camp next season, does Niemela get a chance to at least start in the NHL? Of course that could depend on if Dubas and Keefe are back next season. Looking ahead to the deadline, it does seem Niemela is an untouchable along with obviously Knies, and Dreger did seem to indicate that.

Really enjoy Kloke’s work but im not sure he’s a talent evaluator or have much inside contacts with the leafs so I’m not sure there’s much to read into there.

I think he’s going to need a fair bit of AHL time but I guess you never know until they come over!

How do you square away "great brain" with "extremely suspect decision making"? Decision making is the #1 job of the brain no?
For me the brain/IQ is about seeing where the play is heading before it happens. For me the best example is Marner in that he's got arguably thr best IQ in the league, but his decision making is suspect at times (improved so much over the years).

Its arguably Minten's best trait with his shot. He's just fantastic at being in the right spot all over the ice. The decision making is coachable and I'm excited to see what the Lesfs will do when they get a hold of him.

Will Kressler make the Marlies next year or do you think they'll make him do an overage year?

I think he can play on the Marlies' 4th line. He may start there and then the Leafs can always send him back mid-season. I think Slaggert comes back, but taking on that kind of role.

Again, I just dont really agree. If 6 months after drafting a prospect in the early second round people are hoping he's as good as david kampf that is a loss in my opinion.

Edit: I dont see people saying things like "gee, I sure hope Niemela is as good as Justin Holl! He's an every day NHLer and that would be a win!"
17.2% of players selected in the 2nd round play 100 NHL games.
If you get one you beat the odds.

Liljegren
Timmons
Niemela
Villeneuve

We got enough young RHD, we don't need more, especially because he's 6'2 ... too tall for Dubas' taste :sarcasm:

Joking of course, you can never have enough good young Defencemen. I frequent that site too, its great to get an idea of who's available at our 1st pick based on the teams current position in the standings. I just read the scouting reports and stats on this guy and not seeing even him play a single minute of hockey i'd be okay with us taking him

This graph sums up to 100 %, so I'm pretty sure it means 17.2 % of the players with at least 100 NHL games were selected in the 2nd round, not vice versa.
The number you are looking for is in the following paragraph of the article, 34 % of the 2nd rd picks become NHL players with more than 99 games.

I'm not sure you can clearly ascertain where a player is on the development curve before you've seen them graduate to the AHL. Liljegren debuted in the AHL at 18 the year after his draft and was understandably raw. Niemela has stayed in Finland for D+3.

Maybe Niemela comes over at 21 next year and is ready out of the box like a Pontus Holmberg. Maybe he'll need a year or two. Who knows?

So the NCAA frozen four ends on Apr 8. By that point, there are only 3 nhl games left.

If Knies goes all the way, he might get one nhl game in, but I doubt he plays in the playoffs. Maybe 4th line minutes.

You doubt he plays in the playoffs? They are talking about him being the deadline acquisition for the 2nd line.

If Knies signs he’s going to be on the 2nd or 3rd line and he’s going to be a problem for whoever we face. We don’t even need him to score we just need him to go cause havoc in front of the net like he’s been doing at Minnesota. He’s probably the perfect add for the team.

I hope you're right but that might be a bit optimistic.

I think the point the other poster was trying to make is that if Minnesota goes to the Frozen Four, it won't leave much time for Knies to get acclimated to the NHL before playoffs and I'm not sure you want to throw in (or depend on) a rookie to jump in and be a difference maker in the playoffs.

I hope Knies can come in and be a beast but I'm tempering my expectations.
