Easiest way to get more prospects at the WJC is to draft outside of Canada/US/Russia, but thats been most of our recent picks.

Voit is good enough to be there anyways, US will always look for a way to not take the CHL kids

It kind of makes sense to take the kids who stay under their control, as long as they're as good or almost as good as the free agent.

What are people's reasons for wanting to see McMann over, say Gaudette?

They're both kind of straight-line players, and both older. Gaudette, we kind of know what he is at the NHL level already, McMann is a mystery box.
Is it just the allure of the unknown in the NHL?

Or is it that, where Gaudette relies a little more on speed, McMann relies a little more on strength, and people like the shimmer of power forward they see there?

I'm down for McMann getting a shot, but just curious what others think. Neither would really break above the 4th line, but I keep seeing flickers of hype around McMann and have heard literally zero on here about Gaudette since the season started. It's like one is being held on to as a prospect, and the other is being written off as a journeyman.

McMann brings a consistent physical game. It would be nice to fill out the roster with players that do that.

Neither are overly special, but McMann is a LW and there are more opportunities at LW than RW right now.

Even with Malgin gone, Gaudette has to go up against Anderson, and Anderson has had a much more promising season than Gaudette at both ends.

Problem is, McMann, at best, can replace a guy like ZAR/Hunt right now. They play the same kind of game but they have more defensive upside. McMann has some offensive upside, but he needs to show it more consistently and has to do more than just grind his way to goals if he wants a legit chance with the Leafs.

That's great, but it is pretty worrying that Minten has only 4 ES goals.

I read a report last month that while he's improved his overall offensive game, his inability to get his shot off at even strength (less time, more pressure, etc) is noticeable and definitely something he'll need to keep working on at the next level.

What is his overall points breakdown?

Looks like a PP specialist.

His strength is his defensive game.
All the scouting talks about that.
His shooting pct is around 16% so it must be insane on the pp. He is tied for 3rd in the league for ppg and the 2 guys above him are 20 year olds. Or his shot volume on the pp is much higher so he plays differently at es. Kamloops is going to be a bad team next year if they lose all their 20 year olds so we'll see if he is still a pp specialist when its just him and Levis.

Just noticed that 6 players from the Leafs 2018 draft have played at least 1 NHL game so far.

Early days in the grand scheme of things, but has the potential to be quite a productive draft for the Leafs scouts

There's a reasonably likely chance that 50% of our picks since 2018 end up as full time NHLers by 2024/25. Obviously not all for our team and only a handful of them in top-6/top-4 roles but still incredibly impressive considering where our picks were.

It's really only the 2020 draft where it would be hard to hit 50% but that's a function of having 6 picks in the 6th/7th round and Amirov getting sick. Even still, Hirvonen, Niemela and Villeneuve seem like pretty safe bets at bottom-6/bottom pair players at least and one or more of Amirov, Akhtyamov, Ovchinnikov, Miettinen, Tverberg is likely to break through eventually.

Nice little story behind the paywall on the Athletic about Noel Hoefenmayer, but I'm still doubtful that he ever makes it to the show.

If he keeps working at it, he might eventually carve out a nice career in Europe, though.

- A lot of words to describe his journey from ottawa 67 > echl > ahl
- Won top dman award in ohl as an overager
- Didn’t complain when he was demoted to echl
- teammates trust and like him
- spent last time with randi, skating consultant, to get more efficient and fast with his skating
- talks to rielly and watches his tape
- 17/24 points are 5v5
- 38/65 of his pim came from 2 games. 65 pim is second highest in the league
- lhd who can play right side, has a good shot
- can get beaten by faster forwards according to the article
- does crossword puzzles

My opinion: he’s better than the guys we drafted in 2017 except liljegren. Free wallet.

If anyone wants an article from there, i can take requests.

Didn't realize he was drafted in 2017 two spots of when the Leafs took Ian Scott in the 4th round. Wonder how much Dubas was keeping tabs on him leading up to that selection. Arizona took him.

How legit of a prospect is he right now? At 23, as a d-man, with this kind of jump in production .. there seems to be something there. Or is his skillset looking more like he'll be TJ Brennan type?

The article makes him seem like TJ Brennan, but Hoefenmeyer has more developmental resources. It will probably be 2-3 years of development if he actually makes the nhl. Still a good pickup though since all except 2 guys made the ahl (liljegren and McGregor).
