Last few years are feeling a bit like 2016/2017 all over again (albeit with less draft capital)... three years from now, our prospect pool is really going to feel the ill effects of going for players with minimal upside like Minten, Cowan, etc. Could have taken swings for guys like Hutson, Gulyayev, Cristall to revamp the pool - guess that's too much to ask for
All we've been doing is taking swings on smaller skilled guys. Like what? Knies and Minten are the 1st 2 guys who are bigger than 6'0 that we took in the 1st 2 rounds since like 2017. Could count Amirov but it doesn't look good for his career atm. Minten scores 31 goals and 67 points in 57 GP on a stacked team with older players that pushed him down the lineup and we are calling him a failure of a pick when he went 38th overall. It's pretty sad at this point but lets go draft that 5'9 guy who has skating issues because he can produce in a junior league and pray that he can survive in the NHL with that skating. Robertson barely able to stay healthy and he can actually skate.

Who was that kid from last years camp who had all kinds of offensive upside and had a good name? Underwhelmed in camp tho.
What happened to that guy?

I hope we invite Mazden Leslie, Tomasso de Luca and Matthew Soto to camp.

De Luca would be my #1, but I am not sure he'd go to a development camp.

I'd add Rhett Stoesser (if he is healthy), Harrison Meneghin, or Stephen Peck from a goalie perspective.

Donovan McCoy, Jordan Tourigny, Samuel Mayer, Hunter Mayo, and Francesco Dell'Elce on defense.

Wouldn't try jumping through too many hoops for forwards outside of De Luca. We have forward depth in our system so maybe look for guys we can target on AHL deals (i.e. Braeden Bowman).

Undrafted FA

Oskar Asplund — LHD, Almtuna IF, 5-foot-11 - Asplund registered 30 points in 49 games as a teenage defenceman in HockeyAllsvenskan

Gabriel Szturc — C, Kelowna Rockets, 5-foot-11 - He was the second-leading scorer on a weak Rockets team, registering 79 points in 56 games (a 96-point pace had he not missed games to be with Czechia’s national team)

Jordan Tourigny — RHD, Shawinigan Cataractes, 5-foot-11 - he posted 41 points in 67 games for a poor Shawinigan team this year. He gaps effectively, he reads the play offensively and defensively well, he’s a competitor, he uses a good stick to be disruptive defensively, and he can move pucks and steer play.

Mazden Leslie — RHD, Vancouver Giants, six feet - Despite having been a top prospect in minor hockey and now a 50-point defenceman in his draft year as the most productive defenceman on a below-average team in Vancouver, and despite having pro size, Leslie is NHL Central Scouting’s 125th-ranked North American skater, well back of his statistical contemporaries. Some of that is because his offensive game isn’t where his defensive game is and he has had to learn to play a little less as an individual. But he also played 25-plus minutes a night for most of this season against matchups he probably wasn’t ready for as a 17-year-old.

Hudson Thornton — LHD, Prince George Cougars, 5-foot-11 - He finished second among all WHL defencemen in goals (23) and fifth in points (74), both of which broke Cougars records. He has worn a letter for that team the last two years, has also penalty-killed for them for those two years, and has worked to harden his game defensively.

How would people fit the new prospects in with our current pool? I'd probably go:

1) Knies
2) Robertson
3) Niemela
4) Cowan
5) Grebyonkin
6) Minten
7) Voit
8) Moldenhauer
9) Villeneuve
10) Hirvonen
11) Tverberg
12) Abruzesse
13) Steeves
14) Hildeby
15) Miller
16) Kral
17) Kokkonen
18) Malinoski

This is a list of guys that I would invite to development camp.

Undrafted "23" prospects
Tomasso De Luca (LW/C)- Great high iq offensive talent, who needs to work on his skating mechanics.
Hannes Hellberg (RW) - Probably the best sniper available of the undrafted bunch. Good puck protector.
Arvid Bergstrom (D) - Incredible skating dman, but with really raw offensive skills. Plays big for his size.
Ty Halaburda (C) - Probably the best skater of the draft who went undrafted. Just a high energy speedster winger.
Jordan Tourigny (D) - Competitive offensive minded dman. Good mobility and great IQ. Needs to add strength.
Tomas Suchanek (G) - He was incredible in the WJC, one of my favourite goalies this year that was left undrafted.

NCAA Prospects invites
Gabriel Seger (C/LW) - Sizeable 200-ft center who had a great season for Cornell. Great hockey IQ as well.
Ben Steeves (LW/C) - Similar to his brother, he's a competitive high energy forward who had a big breakout year for Duluth.
Marek Hejduk (RW) - Milan's son, great two-way player who does everything right in his own end. Great skater. Inconsistent offensively though.
Kaidan Mbereko (G) - Smaller goalie who had a phenomenal season. Absolutely deserves an opportunity

Older CHL/USHL Guys
Kocha Delic (C) - Consistently one of the hardest working players on the ice. Versatile center who doesn't necessarily have any elite categories.
Ruslan Gazizov (LW) - Some untapped offensive potential, great hands, vision and edgework. Speed needs to improve.
Niks Fenenko (D) - Great mobility, and plays well on both ends of the ice.
Spencer Sova (D) - One of best skating dman you'll see. Needs to round out defensively, but I can see him having a breakout year in the o this year.
Ethan Whitcomb (C/LW) - Sizeable 6'4 winger who plays inside and out. Has good speed for his size and showed some offensive potential this year for a bad Muskegon team.

One could argue Greb in the top 3. The kid had one of the best ever seasons in the KHL statistically for an U20 player. Hirvonen should probably be higher since he's been a solid player in a pro league for a few years now.

I would probably have

1. Knies
2. Niemela
3. Robertson
4. Grebenkin
5. Hirvonen
6. Voit
7. Cowan
8. Minten
9. Hildeby
10. Tverberg

13. Abruzzese
14. Moldenhauer
15. Kokkonen

What?!?! We can invite Soo players (or draft picks) even though Dubas is gone?

I like Hedqvist. The rest are either AHL contract candidates or filler, but Hedqvist has a legit shot at getting drafted next year.

2nd straight year we invited Elias. I can't remember if he made it last year but he was invited. We also invited De St. Phalle once before, and he has a deep connection with Hardy so I imagine he is getting an AHL contract at least from us after this upcoming year.

I feel like we should have been able to either aim higher or convince more impressive prospects of coming here; especially given our lack of picks and ample opportunity to develop and get ice time here long term. This is a whole lot of underwhelming.

Nice to see both Peksa and AA at camp.

Also nice to see a Sundin in the mix.

Pier-Olivier Roy is an interesting invite. Could step into the ECHL I think and be depth for the Marlies.

It is the defenseman (the guy who put up a PPG+), not the forward. He is not eligible to be in the AHL until after next year (which, unless he gets an ELC, likely won't happen).

Plus he is as much of an offensive defenseman as they come and his skating is not good enough IMO.

Definitely not the most exciting bunch of invities.

The ones I feel we're worth the invite include:
Alex Assadourian - He's certainly an interesting invite. Struggled in Sudbury but exploded when given more opportunity in Niagara. High energy player who can skate.
Spencer Sova - as I said earlier, he's one of the best skaters available on Defence. I like him, he still needs work defensively.
Jacob Frasca - Definitely not at the top of my list of O guys I wanted to invite, but he deserves the opportunity. He finally found his consistency this year becoming a ppg player, he uses his size well for positioning. He lacks speed though.
Isac Hedqvist - Didn't look out of place. Despite his size he's very competitive and tenacious. Kind of reminds me of Trevor Moore.
Pier-Oliver Roy - Had a phenomenal season offensively boasting a ppg as a dman. Obviously has skating and defensive flaws, but after his season he's worth it of an invite.

The rest are not necessarily much to talk about.

The @MapleLeafs have extended qualifying offers to goaltender Ilya Samsonov and forwards Nick Abruzzese and Semyon Der-Arguchintsev.

The club did not extend qualifying offers to defencemen Mac Hollowell, Filip Král and Victor Mete.

I’m surprised we didn’t extend an offer to Kral.

Interesting side note... Twitter now requires an account to view tweets

If you are no longer seeing tweets, when people post them, it is probably because Twitter has now blocked this, if you don't have an account, or aren't logged in, on the device that you are using. I noticed a few members were questioning their ability to see Tweets earlier.
