Is he coming over next year? The whole signing guys and having them play in Europe while using up contract spots seems annoying to me. It's not the end of the world but it just seems needless. We had what 5 guys last year on contracts in Europe? Hildeby, Niemela, Hirvonen, Ovchinnikov, and Amirov(different case but was signed while playing in Europe). Just seems like it's not the most efficient use on resources.

Surprised to see him get an ELC. Good on him, guy had a good VHL season.

Kallgren must be gone.
I think we have 5 goalies under contracts next year either on ELCs or AHL deals and Kallgren has been pretty bad on the Leafs and Marlies since he got here. Cavallin and McKay have been pretty good on the Growlers so we could see those 2 back there ad then have Petruzzelli and Hildeby on the Marlies. Idk if this means Peksa is coming over but that'd be nice to see and have him in the mix. Could be a good problem to have on those 2 teams down there considering it seemed like we just kept going through goalies this past year or 2.

I think for them to be able to come over here after their seasons ends and play/practice with the team they need to have an ELC so that's why they do it. Amirov they did it for medical reasons to help him out.

I'm pretty sure they signed Amirov before his diagnosis. He was signed in April 2021, played the following season for a bit and then stopped and it was announced in February 2022 publicly.

Are we sure Niemela and Hirvonen couldn't sign PTO's after their seasons ended? Or sign the contracts then? I don't have an issue with it in special cases. But the number of times we do it feels like it squeezes a bit too much. We were essentially running at 45 contract last year, 44 once Muzzin was done. We managed, and you can always move guys to open up room, though it'd close to impossible to claim someone on waivers, but it also got pretty close to moving guys with value. Abramov was traded essentially to open up a contract slot. Gaudette too. Those guys feel like they're more useful than most guys who get moved for the same reason.

To be honest I'm not sure how it works when it comes to contracts and having players playing in other leagues come over after their season ends. That's just my assumption so maybe someone with more knowledge on that could give you a better/right answer.

Looks like a young Fleury in that vid
Do you think a move around a lot style can work at the highest level? Peksa might need to tone it down as he develops but would too much change take away from what makes him effective? I know guys like Thomas made a career out of it.
We saw with Samsanov when he was calm in net, he was really good. When he struggles he was all over the crease. However maybe what makes Peksa good is how active he is. I wouldn't want a goalie coach to change his style up. I am confident we have found a good one in Curtis Sanford just based on this year.

To call Peksa “a bit of a swimmer” is and understatement. Guy’s Ryan Lochte in the crease.

That level of erratic doesn’t play in the NHL, generally. Gonna need him to chill

Just going to put it out there that I do not have very high hopes for him. Hasn't even cracked the KHL yet and that is probably the best place for him unless the Marlies really do plan on having a 3-man rotation again.

I would assume he plays next season in the KHL with numbers like that, yea? We also have plenty of goalie depth here in North America, so we have time and resources to allow him to develop at his own pace, no?

We can afford to let a Russian goalie or 7 see if they can make their way

I find it interesting that Dubas has somewhat become known for "if you have time, use it", meanwhile he seems to be developing a habit of signing prospects year(s) before losing their rights and then loaning them back to their European teams. I can understand in some cases (mostly looking at Ovchinnikov, maybe now Peksa) you want to have more control over their development even while they're playing overseas, that's fine. It's more puzzling to me that when you have a prospect with 1 year left contracted to their European club (Hirvonen, Niemela, Holmberg, even Lindgren and Johnsson), why not just wait an extra 9 months (or however long until you can sign ELCs that start the following season)? Are you really scared that a guy is going to decide not to try the NHL because you didn't give them their ~$90k signing bonus a year earlier? The only other thing that I can think of is that Dubas and his braintrust think that it's better to get young prospects onto their 2nd contract ASAP, rather than maximizing the value they can extract from just the ELC itself.

We only have 4-6 spots to place a goalie with our 2 farm teams.

Matt Murray
Hildeby
Petruzzelli
McKay
Cavallin
Kallgren

That leaves the rest to play in Europe and get some solid PT.

Samsonov - Leafs
Woll - Leafs
Petruzelli - Marlies
Hildeby - Marlies
Peksa - probably loaned back to Europe
McKay - Growlers
Cavallin - Growlers

It wouldn't shock me to see another goalie signed anyway.

He looks very small. Needs to put on some weight for sure.

It is harder for small goalies, but not sure putting on more weight and becoming less agile is the answer.

I wouldn't say that it doesn't work. Guys like Thomas, Fleury, Quick, Kiprusoff, etc. have made it work in the NHL. Just means it might take them longer to adjust and learn what they can get away with. I'm more concerned with tools, and things like rebound control. If you play an erratic style, you better have the ability to make up for it and be able to limit your rebounds.

A good defense can help insulate a goalie like that too.

He was kicking out some wild rebounds in that highlight pack

Kalligren will start 25 games for Carolina next yr if you let him go. 😉
We seem to butcher young goalies since the days of Felix.

Some of those, there isn't much you can do but he looked to have good foot work and was generally keeping himself in position. As he climbs up the ranks, he will learn to slow down. Woll use to swim with the Marlies in his first 2 years. Look at him now.

He is big enough, but does need weight and strength.

Somewhat off topic, but I always find it funny how people point to Saros as an example of how a small goalie can make it to the NHL, but Saros is literally the only sub 6'0" goalie who is anything in the NHL these days... Now that guys like Khudobin and Halak are on the verge of retirement. Stalock had a bit of a resurgence himself but he too is getting up there in age and will retire soon.

Levi and Wolf are the next wave of smaller goalies but we will see if they can even make it full time. Otherwise, a "small" goalie is 6'1".
