How do you come to that conclusion? I didn't think the Russian Ice Hockey Federatiom was all that humane and empathetic

Because if he was expected to make a full recovery and actually expected to play next year, it would have been reported and celebrated. The fact this signing hasn’t garnered any attention tells us this is unfortunately just a nice gesture.

For Leafs prospect Rodion Amirov, it's been an up and down battle. After being diagnosed with a brain tumour, his hockey career was put on hold and treatments began instead. What was originally a seemingly positive prognosis took a turn for the worse earlier this year, leaving his family, friends and his fans concerned for his health. Unfortunately, accurate updates are extremely difficult to come by given Amirov's geographical location. Today, the hockey world finally received some positive news.

Amirov signed a 1-year contract extension with Salavat in the KHL this week. While it's not clear whether he will play or if it is simply a symbolic gesture, the real encouragement comes in the form of a quote from his head coach Victor Kozlov, translated from Russian.

...

Salavat head coach Viktor Kozlov (translated): "He's glad Rodion Amirov remains with the team. He and the entire coaching staff are counting on him and hope for a speedy return to the ice."

I'll be curious to see who is in the Marlies lineup for this next round. I know they want to succeed, but it would also be a great development opportunity for some of the young guys - Tverberg, Hirvonen, Niemela, Villeneuve, Hildebrand.

Russian hockey teams are far more empathic than you think. They are not processed based at all
A lot of players play in a lot of teams simply because they were once part of the team, or partly because they need a contract
Part of it is nepotism and part of is actually caring for their people

They are defnitely not well polished league but still a lot of good people in that league

Dubas said when he was named Leafs GM that he wanted to prioritize prospect development with both the Marlies and Growlers. I would think that higher skilled/potential guys like Hirvonen and Voit would get opportunites over other guys who are AHL/ECHL lifers for a playoff run

A little bit of searching I found the following:

1. Kyle Kuric - Wikipedia - American professional basketball player in the Euroleague who was diagnosed with brain tumours in 2015 and returned to play at the same level and I believe is still active.

2. Heiko Herrlich - Wikipedia - German striker diagnosed in 2000 with a malignant brain tumour. He returned to play a little further before retiring due to injuries. He's been a football manager since retiring although not a very successful one.

I am not sure how much control Kyle has on that type of decision making at this point. Nor would it be the priority for him. All he can do is hire the right coach that holds that same value as him. Kyle would be overstepping not only the coach, but the GM of the Marlies by mandating the youth to play.

of course in the organizational hierarchy, Kyle's opinion carries more of a weight, but if his Marlies+Growlers GM and Coach are not executing the vision he has for those teams, his only play is really to replace them when it becomes convenient. Most likely in the offseason.

My guess, from what I have seen with Greg Moore, is he is trying to win games. Understandably so. It's not that he doesn't care about prospect development, but it is definitely secondary to winning games. My guess is Hirvonen may get in as he has played against men in a pro league, but I highly doubt Voit will get in.

Greg Moore was mainly known for his player development and it's why I thought we hired him. At the same time that was in the USHL where the league isn't as challenging so you can focus more on that unlike here in the AHL. I do hope we use more of our own picks next year since some might be graduating from the NCAA/CHL and a few of the ones from over seas came over hopefully to stay.

The 2020 draftees, which comprised quite a number of guys with some NHL potential, is now coming to fruition. It will be great to see Niemela, Hirvonen, Villeneuve, Tverberg, Ovchinnikov, plus Voit and Hildeby with the Marlies Should be fun.

the fact that Toronto has been having so much success drafting since 2018 is pretty astounding. Two top-four defenseman and a potential top 6 forward, as of now. The fact more are on the way, even as depth pieces is great drafting success.

Who are you referring to? I assume Sandin is one and he was shown the door because they didn't like him enough to play in the top 6.
