I would definitely like an ELC for Rifai. Steady defensive defenseman with a good blend of physicality. He's kind of old but so was McMann.

I'd probably give one to Hoefenmayer as well. I'd prefer Hoefenmayer on an ELC over RFA's Mete or Kral if it came to that.

The numbers agree, but its all circumstantial and entirely dependent on who is left. I think the Leafs would have picked in the 1st round last year if Öhgren was still available. Quality > quantity, but if you have 15 guys ranked essentially the same at your spot, there's really no reason not to move back 15 spots.
Yep, I functionally agree, I just think the odds of you thinking one guy is so much more superior versus 10-15 guys being similar enough is much lower to the point I bet they functionally identify a very short list of "if this guy who reasonably shouldn't be there but is there" type guys they will move back. Saw it with K'Andre Miller in the Sandin draft and Ohgren in last year's draft.

Kral and Mete are better, although we may decide to move on from Mete.

Kral has more NHL upside. Hoefenmayer is all offense and just offense dried up. May be a good career AHLer but his skating and defense still need major leaps to get on an NHL radar.

I remember a time Kral was doing very well offensively and then it dried up and it hasn't really returned. I like the high offense and physicality package better of Hoefenmayer more than Kral who doesn't really excel that way. Kral is defintely a better skater and more stable defensively.

They could just drop Mete and keep both. Speaking of Mete, does he have the season off because of his grandfather's shooting? The Marlies have too many defenseman already, they don't really need him right now. But, there was never really an update on his status.

Hollowell was injured January 14th and has a 3 month recovery time, which would leave him potentially available for one of the final two Marlies games of the season.

The Marlies playoff defense core will look pretty nice when Hollowell returns.

Dahlstrom - Benn
Kral - Niemela
Rifai - Hollowell
ex. Hoefenmayer - Villeneuve

They might have to run 11 forwards 7 defenseman. But, getting Hirvonen, like the Leafs getting Knies should change that plan.

We have Niemala, Kokkonen and Villeneuve signed to contracts for next year.
Kral and Hollowell are RFA's, so chances are retained.
Mete and Benn are NHL contracts... so I'd assume the Leafs will do something similar next year as well. Maybe the names change, maybe they don't, but there will be a couple of veteran guys in the org... It wouldn't shock me to see Benn back to be honest, Mete maybe thinks he can still play in the NHL somewhere.
I think it's probable that Rifai gets an ELC.
Miller and Hellickson are on one year AHL contracts, so I doubt they'll be back.
Will Koster go back for his senior year, if the rest of the talent bolts from Minnesota?
Dahlstrom's NHL dreams are likely done.. so he probably heads back to the SHL.
Pietroniro won't be back.

Show some Mete love.....250 NHL games and still 24.

Does Hildeby have any chance of playing over Kallgren or Petruzzelli if it came to it in the playoffs?

I might suggest that depends on how Hildeby looks when he gets here. The coaches will make that decision. This is an opportunity to judge where he is, and whether he will be with the Marlies or the SHL next year. The rest of this year isn’t as important.

Hi Leafs fans. Minnesota Gopher season ticket holder here. I’ve been reading this board the past couple years and finally decided to register. I love your excitement for Knies and it is absolutely warranted. Simply put, he’s a beast with the puck. He’s a unique blend of size, speed, and hands and a great shot. I will never understand how you found him in the 2nd round but it was an absolute steal for your organization. I can’t wait yo watch his long career in Toronto!

Welcome to HF boards! Always nice for a new poster with extra knowledge on players and prospects around here.

But also be ready for hf to assume youre a leafs fan because of your name and tell you how overrated Knies is

Anyone calling Knies overrated hasn’t watched much hockey. Some of the Twitter comments I read today are comical.

No game was safe with 5 mins to go at that time..... between him and toskala i still cant believe how bad it was

Yeah, well hopefully Hildeby is a different beast...

Does anyone know how he stacks up against Wallstedt? Obviously Wallstedt is the bluechip first rounder but they're only a year apart in age and Hildeby's numbers are stellar.
