Since the frozen four is in Tampa. It’s pretty much all but guaranteed Knies will only be able to get in 2 games before playoffs(if he signs)

Marlies playing well right now?

3-5-1-1

What's up?

I mean compared to what they've been on paper all year, they've been excellent.

Their top 6 defensemen by GP this year are Rifai, Hoefenmayer, Miller, Villeneuve, Kokkonen, and Pietroniro. Only 2 of those guys are on SPC's, 4 of them are rookies (including both SPC's), and the last 2 were full time ECHLers last year. 7th in GP is Hellickson, who is also an AHL contract and ECHL quality. Rifai and Miller have been really good stay-at-home guys. Hoefenmayer went from a guy who didn't look like he was worth another AHL contract last year to being a top-notch AHL offensive defenseman who should at least have a nice career in Europe. Kokkonen has had a solid but unspectacular year. Villeneuve, though, has looked really good.

Up front, they have been forced to use Solow, Centazzo, Badini, Chyzowski, and a bunch of other ECHL caliber forwards recently because we traded away Abramov, Gaudette, and Anderson and we have injuries. We can't score. I don't think they expected to use Johnstone and Slaggert as regulars but they have been all year (and surprisingly they haven't been awful, even though Slaggert isn't bringing much offense to the table).

Kallgren has sucked all year. Petruzzelli has been inconsistent but he has time and looks promising. Woll, of course, has dominated.

The redeeming factor is that we should get some help from our prospects and we are starting to get healthy. We will be fine defensively. Even if Mete and Hollowell do not return, we will have Dahlstrom, Villeneuve, Rifai, Kral, Kokkonen, Miller, Benn, (hopefully) Niemela, and Hoefenmayer available to ensure we don't need to use Pietroniro or Hellickson in the playoffs. Goaltending is fine if we have Woll. If we don't have Woll, then it gets iffy... If he comes over, Hildeby may end up being a better choice than Petruzzelli and especially Kallgren. Forward will be the main concern. McMann may be out with an injury. Fortunately, SDA should at least be back to add a bit more firepower and maybe Hirvonen will also join the team.

Steeves - Shaw - Blandisi
Abruzzese - Holmberg - SDA
Hirvonen - Zohorna - Ellis
Clifford - Johnstone - Tverberg
Slaggert/Ovchinnikov/Chyzowski

Rifai - Villeneuve
Dahlstrom - Hoefenmayer
Kral - Niemela
Benn/Kokkonen/Miller/Hellickson/Pietroniro

Woll - Petruzzelli
Kallgren

What’s the take on CHL OA FA’s.

There was a piece on 32 thoughts last night; of the four highlighted players, one guy has the same first name and last name. Which I endorse.

It is a fairly underwhelming group this year. I don't think I am giving any ELCs.

For OHLers: Sunday Top 10 - Overagers Worth Signing (2023)

Vierling may get an ELC but he is not that impressive. He is the best on that list by far (now that #2 Burke and #4 McDonald have signed), but he didn't eclipse the 40 goal nor the 100 point mark. Fringe ELC. The rest are AHL contracts at best. Hardie, Morrison, and Hayes would be the most interesting of the bunch, and could challenge for AHL depth jobs but most likely end up as the next wave of quality Growlers to keep their offense dangerous.

Ivan may be a bottom 6er, but not a special one. I wouldn't give him an ELC personally, but some team likely will. Lawrence and Rochette are the other two main guys out of the QMJHL, and again, I am probably not giving either an ELC. Lawrence may be worth an AHL contract, and Rochette will probably go to Switzerland if he doesn't get an ELC. Rochette easily would have been one of the best AHL contract options if he does stay, but I am not sure he is worth an ELC either.

WHL is probably the best place to look right now. Riley Fiddler-Schultz won't get much attention but he probably should. Probably only going to be a 4th liner, like his father Vern Fiddler, but a gritty, skilled defensive 4th liner who can put up 25-30 points a year even though his WHL production is mediocre. Sissons may be a more recent example of that kind of player. De la Gorgondiere was mentioned in 32 Thoughts. Good option for an offensive defenseman type, but much like Hoefenmayer, may only top out as an AHL offensive specialist so probably not a guy I am giving an ELC. Zloty of Winnipeg is similar, but his production is likely inflated by his team. Same with McClennon and Pederson . McClennon is a smaller scorer who was drafted by Philly but went unsigned. Pederson has size but is very raw and doesn't score enough for a guy without much defensive value. Dowhaniuk was also mentioned on 32 Thoughts but he hasn't been all that impressive to me.

This is not the exhaustive list, but for the most part, we are looking at guys who are hopefully some decent AHL contract projects that can be seasoned on the Growlers and upgrade some underwhelming AHL depth options.

NCAA and especially Europe have the best ELC candidates. Those crops are not amazing either, but if you want to spend an ELC on anyone, that is where you look. I would be totally fine if the Leafs just added a good crop of AHL contracts this year though, because we will be adding a fair number of our own guys to the mix this year.

Morrison, Hardie, and Rochette are the three most interesting to me, but I'm on the train of starting them with an AHL deal and graduating them if it makes sense
