Not sure I saw this but ...
Random aside. I cant stand how a lot of people assume if a player is sent back to junior, or somewhere that isnt directly tied with the Leafs organization (this isnt just about the Leafs but prospects in general) that the Leafs somehow have no more control over that players development when theyre gone.

Couldnt be further from the truth. Guys will constantly be checking in on them and giving them advice on what to work on.

Big reason why I cant stand the whole "he cant learn anything else in junior!" crowd. Of course a player can, and the franchise that owns the rights to that player can directly tell them what to work on and then consistently check up on them throughout the season to see how that is progressing.

This is just a good reminder that just because a prospect isnt directly with the organization doesn't mean that the Leafs arent actively involved in trying to help and develop their game.

Or, player X can't be developed in the AHL because ...
Hi Luke!

That kid has no quit in him. He really just keeps trying harder and harder.

If he can keep himself healthy and evolve his game to compensate for his lack of size, that drive that he has can really take him places, along with this skill.

Pulling hard for the kid to put it together and legitimately challenge for a spot next season.

He has the kind of drive other professional athletes dream of.... right after they dream about having so much talent they never have to try.

But really, nobody will ever be able to say he doesn't earn every chance he gets with his hard work and what I assume is an amazing support system both with our team and in his personal life.

I really hope he gets his chance to shine.

Just catching up on this thread finally but yup agreed. Seems like a great kid. Really rooting for him. I use to catch the odd ohl game and he's always had a bullet of a shot and a great work ethic. Hopefully he'll get his time in a Leaf uniform soon enough. It's all about just staying healthy. He's had some really bad luck.

Don't have to really discuss it, the results speak for themselves.
It wasn't a good pick.
If you want to rewrite history go ahead if it fits your story.
I'm not rewriting anything. I agree that it wasn't a good pick. Just noting that developing Schenn in the AHL wasn't really an option due to the agreement between the NHL and CHL.

There was no rule that said he had to go the NHL before he was ready.
He should have stayed in junior, and then if he still needed development against men, the AHL.
Agreed, he could not go to the AHL if he was underage/didn't meet years in junior requirement.
Drafted 1988, 20 years old 1989.

There was no rule that said he had to go to the NHL before he was ready, but there was a rule that said if he was being sent down, it had to be to the WHL.
Debatable what should have been done. He needed a league like the AHL. He was probably just going to pick up bad habits in the WHL; excelling by being bigger than everyone.
The right choice is really just not picking a low ceiling defensive defenseman in a lottery position in a league moving the opposite direction just because he's big and a good kid.

What worse ... Leafs Trade Up, Take Schenn 5th Overall

"They gave up a second- and third-round pick along with their first-round selection to get it done."

My meaning about going to the AHL, was that he goes back to junior, then he meets the AHL requirement after his 1 year back at Kelowna, he'd have been 20, and have 4 years of CHL experience.

20 years old

Players drafted and playing for CHL teams are ineligible to play in the professional minor leagues (AHL, ECHL) until they are 20 years old (by December 31st of that year) or have completed four years in major juniors.

Marlies depth chart has a fair number of guys unless we are not bringing multiple guys back.

Koster is likely 1LD for Minnesota next year. He is not that for the Marlies. Unless you are worried about him not signing next year for some reason, then there is no real reason to rush it. Same with Miettinen...
Fair enough, unless they wanna get going with better training and coaching resources.

Crazy overtime.. steeves stopped on a penalty shot he looked like he couldnt be bothered to take lol.. cleveland scores on a rush afterwards

Pretty tame first round. One major upset in Cornell winning, and a bit surprising Harvard not only lost but got stomped in the process. The rest went pretty much as expected. No more Miller, but we still have Koster, Knies, and Veeti to keep it interesting. Too bad at least 1 is definitely getting eliminated tomorrow.

I had Minny, BU, Michigan, and Quinnipiac as my final 4, let's see if I'm right.

I keep wanting to temper my expectations on Knies, but then I read stuff like this from the Hockey News…

“A scout from a different NHL team recently and here's what he volunteered:

"Matthew Knies is an NHL player playing college hockey," he said. "He should be in Toronto the day after Minnesota's season is done."

Knies plays today. I hope he goes all the way and experiences a championship level intensity. It will help him adjust to the NHL. Coming in on a high like that is much better than trying to adjust after disappointing early exit from the Frozen 4.

Who knows, maybe he can be a modern day power forward version of rookie Claude Lemieux in 86 (different era version) who came in at 20 years of age with only 10 games NHL experience that season and scored 10 goals in his first playoffs.

(My tempered expectations thrown out the window)

Knies will get the 4th line starts and then sprinkled into playing with the stars on the top 6.

People need to temper their expectations, Knies is a really good complimentary player, I don't think he's ever been the star player on his line, but he does an excellent job at creating space for his linemates.. which is precisely what we are looking for. If he can bring a mean streak into his game he would be perfect.

Vladislav Kara? He's had a late bloomer season at age 24. Has his skating improved significantly? I remember his skating was ugly when he was originally drafted. I also remember that he comes from a place roughly equivalent to Whitehorse or Yellowknife.
Seems like Vityaz collects reclamation players so his numbers can be taken with a grain of salt.

The team leaders - Jeremy Roy, Stepan Starkov, Alexander Yaremchuk, etc. are or were highly-regarded juniors that couldn't move up in bigger clubs (or in Roy's case the NHL).
