I remember him being among the hidden gems of the 2018 draft. He went in the 2nd to the Sens but never really developed as hoped.

This kid was a stud back in minor hockey. Remember watching him in AAA in Alberta as an underage and he was dominant. Interesting to see how players develop (Nobody even knew who Cale Makar was at that time).

Interesting story. His first year at Omaha interrupted, he had Covid and long Covid symptoms for the rest of the year, then 21/22 a lower body injury that put him out after two games for a month… so maybe two years where circumstances didn’t allow him to shine and then this year. So he did well this year, and has the opportunity to make something of himself. These are good signings, and some will work out, or at least help out the farm clubs.

That's some interesting context .. really like this kind of signing

It's good, but maybe not incredible.

For example, he's fifth on his team in scoring.

Macklin Celebrini is a 2006 born kid
Harvey 2003
Perron 2005
Emerson 2003
Moldenhauer 2004
5th in scoring but he's 2nd in PPG behind only Celebrini, who's in contention to go 1st overall next year.

So he's got a pretty good, high scoring team... but, his PPG is 24th all time, for an 18 yo in the USHL... in some pretty good company.... so, maybe if he can replicate this scoring, at the College level, with less talent around.. then he certainly looks like a future NHL player.

Yeah when you look at that range of U19 production recently you see some very legitimate B prospects - Brisson, Doan, Farrell. But in terms of guys that made it, other than Maccelli you have to go back 10 years plus to the likes of Guentzel, Dzingel, Haula, Backes, Hinostroza, Kuraly. Not a common path, but he's on track.

Seems like a classic Dubas signing. Somewhat obscure prospect, but seems to have real upside. A lomgshot, but when you don't have many picks available, you've got to dig deeper to restock your prospect pool.

Tl;dr
Fast and good skater. Gets outmuscled.

Reading between the lines:
Some tools with excellent skating, but needs more refinement in positioning, iq. Offensive passing dman, which is odd considering he put small numbers in ncaa. Will need more video time.

How is Lisowky's wheels?

Also because of Moldenhaur's league, is the production exciting or expected?
Average.

Small plus not elite skating is something I don't typically go for.

Ah.. you meant Lisowky... that wasn't clear, from that post alone. Most scouting reports call his skating a strength... maybe not elite... but still a strength.

Overall, he’s a good skater. Strong on his edges in tight spots, he has good hips and utilizes stick-led turns for a quality weight balance transfer. He has really good speed at the top end — breakaway speed, even. The first step quickness isn’t there, though, especially in a change of direction, out-of-start-and-stop situation.

Speed can't really be taught, but acceleration can... so with some work, perhaps he can improve... his major strength is his shot.

That kid has no quit in him. He really just keeps trying harder and harder.
Among Nick's many talents, this is the clear standout that separates him from most of his peers. I think we as a fanbase, including myself, have experienced a bit of prospect fatigue as it relates to Nick. I personally find myself having to remind myself that the kid is still 21 going on 22 years old and that the one aspect of his profile that you just cannot teach is work ethic and determination. I actually think this time outside of the limelight will be really good for him. There has always been unfair expectation, as well as this overwhelming sense of urgency for Nick to not only be in the lineup, but be an impact player. When in reality he just wasn't ready.

I have always had question marks about how he plays the game, and how he needs to adapt to be successful at the highest level. The talent and skillset is there in spades, it's always been about adapting his game to best compliment that skillset.

really happy to see him putting in the work and getting back on the ice, but was there any doubt that he would be on the ice as soon as he was physically cleared lol. The kid is an absolute dog. Still very much pulling for robbo

Good to see him back on the ice! Sucks there’s no chance he’ll be able to return even for a Marlies playoff run but I expect him to arrive at camp next year ready to go!

I posted the list out of interest. I don't think we are of any interest, to any of the better names. We can't even offer a NHL contract at this point, for this year anyway. A PTO and NHL for next year... but that isn't as attractive as burning a year off.

Like @TheDoldrums suggests, there are easier paths elsewhere.

The Leafs haven't really been very active on the top NCAA free agent prospects in awhile for that reason. They still find some fairly good value, which has been very impressive since Dubas took over.

I'd expect more of the same from the NCAA and Europe. Mainly lesser known/scouted free agents that they can add without having to burn an ELC, or sometimes even straight AHL contracts (McKay for example).

The Marlies signed five guys last year.

How long do you consider "awhile", because Alex Steeves signed two years ago and he was arguably the top NCAA Free Agent that year.

We can't offer him much short term opportunity tbh.
He's a right shot D with Holl on his way out and Brodie aging out. He is Canadian which at least shouldn't make him adverse to signing north of the border. A BC boy but not from Vancouver and the Canucks aren't coming off a very shiny season so he won't automatically have them in his sights. I don't know that he would concede his prospect status to Niemela as they are not similar players and he has his man strength so isn't a player that needs to percolate much. I could see him giving the Leafs a good look if Dubas pitches.

He was definitely not among the top free agents that year as far as I remember. The point is that they typically don't sign top free agents because of the reasons above, not that they never have.
