If Knies signs - and just like Abruzzese - he would not be eligible to play in the AHL this season. You had to be on the AHL roster at the time of the roster freeze.
Not even regular season?

So what's the "In legitimate contention for a day 1 roster spot" list up to now?

Robertson
Steeves
Anderson
Holmberg
Abruzzese
Knies* (If he signs)
Malgin** (Long shot he comes back over before UFA)

Just a huge influx of U23 talent that we either signed or drafted that's now ready to challenge for an NHL role. Awesome to see this wave of young talent come in, finally remedying Hunter's egregious failure in the 16 and 17 drafts.

Kral isn't ready either, and there isn't a spot for him.

He has another year of waiver exemption and I would run with Dahlstrom, Kral, and Rubins as our main LD depth on the Marlies. We would already be in a good spot for depth next year.

Nope.....it's basically meant to keep teams from stacking their AHL team if their NHL team isn't going make the playoffs. If a player is not on the AHL roster at 3 pm on freeze day, they are ineligible to play in the AHL for the rest of the season.

That's why there is so many paper transactions of sending young guys down to be there for the roster freeze. And it's also why teams burn up the 4 callup rule at the same time.

How did it work with Andreas Johnsson joining the Marlies for the playoffs a few years back? Was he already signed to an ELC and loaned out to his Swedish team?

I thought that there used to be a carveout for new signings and PTO's, players coming directly from amateur and Euro hockey. Rielly for example played after Moose Jaw got didn't make the playoffs. Could just be that season end dates are all messed up from Covid, I think the OHL is around a month behind normal

Bingo. He signed in June 2015, and played in the 2016 AHL playoffs after his Swedish season had concluded.

Douglas up front for sure. I think one of Rubins or Hollowell will be given long looks as cheap depth... maybe both.

It doesn't feel like the Leafs will need to go out and sign anybody with all these good prospects knocking at the door.

The window is wide open.

EDIT: I forgot about Niemela as well. Could be someone that really blows competition away if he does get signed.

Honestly, I leave Niemela in Finland for at least another year. Or sign him and loan him back, leaving the door open to recall him to the Marlies mid-season or something.

Rielly had signed his ELC the summer prior. I believe this rule applies to NHL players who were not on the AHL roster on freeze day, and players who signed post AHL freeze deadline. Callups from lower leagues can still happen.

It's convoluted, but it's to avoid stacking an AHL team with NHL players for the playoffs..

i really want knies to play with the leafs this year, he hasnt been around this team so i doubt he will feel the same pressure alot of these guys will feel when the playoffs roll around, just send him out and let him do his thing, maybe he scores a big goal for us..i can see it happening! hes like the rookie u send up in the 9th inning to face the legend pitcher throwing a no hitter, hes too young and excited to care about the "moment" hes in.

It wasn't just Hunter, our drafting record during the early part of that decade was pathetic.

I don't think it was solely Hunder's Drafting, though it didn't help, but the development that is so much improved. Heck we are taking undrafted players and developing them into players now with pretty good results and regularity. Even a player every couple of years of that ilk is very much above the average NHL team.

What’s Niemela’s projection?
Top-4, little bit of top pair upside, he's a monster in transition defense and loves to activate. Scored a ton this year too so we've seen his creativity bear fruit. Not very physical but won't shy away from action, just doesn't defend well along the boards (shutting down cycles), but the stick work is always effective. Great first pass, deceptive skating and handling too. I've taken a liking to him as the most skilled/reliable dman on Karpat this year on a consistent basis. Other defenseman on their team had me anxious at times while watching (including other Leafs prospect Rindell), so I'd say I've come to trust this guy on the ice.

Best attributes: 4-way skating and displays illusiveness/deceptiveness, smart player, transition defense (great stick through the NZ).
Needs work: Strength, speed (sometimes evident when beaten wide, good stick work usually makes up for this at Liiga level though), physical play (wish he'd be more like a Sandin as an undersized D, step into guys sometimes). Get him in with Dicky in the offseason in Toronto pretty much ;)

Not a lot screams elite, so I see a #3/#4 dman here but there is certainly a chance he is our best RHD in a few years. Has all of the tools to be a PP QB, second-pair guy eating 18:00-20:00 a night on a good team.

He also averages 7 helmet adjustments a game. hehe. love the player though. Should be in Toronto this fall or next spring around this time. Hope this helps in some way :)
