Not sure how I feel about Knies coming out early. Do we really need him right now? I don’t see where he’d slot in our lineup right now. He’d probably be playing with the Marlies if anything, no?

he would be a better option than anyone on that 4th line. he is already a better option than abruz who clearly isnt ready and isnt worth keeping as the 13th/14th forward

I actually thought Abruzzese was quite solid today. Had a few chances and didn't make any noticeable mistakes.

beh i wasnt impressed , yes i do realize that its only been 2 games but id rather player knies or any of the other 5 marlies that have played for the leafs this year. Each of those guy IMO have shown more in their short stints.

If Knies signs - and just like Abruzzese - he would not be eligible to play in the AHL this season. You had to be on the AHL roster at the time of the roster freeze.

Yeah I agree. He's definitely a better player than all of Spezza, Simmonds and Clifford.

He may be a better player than them, but not the player 4th line needs
Simmonds and Cliff actually has been really good last few games

They do need to be limited. You can't have Kuch line against their line like today's game

The 2nd and 4th lines are still in flux. There's a spot to be had but it won't be easy. Excited to see him get a few games in before the playoffs.

He's a lot more likely to be a Dylan Holloway than a Cole Caufield this season, but developmentally it seems like its his time. If something big happens thats great but I wouldn't count on him to be better than someone like Steeves right now. I think you bring him up because he may be pro ready rather than for an immediate need but he ends up a Marlie for the playoffs rather than a Leaf.

I am really looking forward top seeing Abruzzese against AHL competition. Bringing him up to a veteran AHL lineup in a playoff run isn't his best chance to shine.

I actually thought Abruzzese was quite solid today. Had a few chances and didn't make any noticeable mistakes.
You can tell Nick's first 4.5 periods in the NHL were very tentative. He was clearly playing to not make mistakes rather than playing to make plays. He almost didn't even want to touch the puck, and he was always the first guy on his line to make a change. He didn't move the needle in either direction. It was the personification of neutrality TBH. Which is completely understandable when you consider nerves of your first pro game, and that his 1st game he was stapled to the 4th line in a hostile environment and his 2nd game was against the B2B champs.

But somewhere in that 2nd period I saw Nick starting to get more active in the corners, extending his shifts a bit more, and it really looked like he was finally playing the game that got him to the NHL. He looked a lot more loose, and he was actually reading the play instead of just trying to survive. I think if we give him a couple more games we will actually start to see what he is capable of. I actually really liked how that 3rd line played last night with Nick on the line.

Rindell has been playing in U20 recently - definitely looks like a non-prospect at this point, if he wasn't already.

Also, just given the fact that the Marlies have signed five NCAA players recently, three of which are D, it seems doubtful that Ryan O'Connell is joining the org in any capacity leading up to the expiration of his rights expiring Aug 15th.

There is still room for O'Connell, but it would just be to replace some of the ECHL guys mostly.

So far, only Joyeux/Miller looks like a guy who could factor into the Marlies next year, and that is mostly as a #9 and insurance for Villeneuve.

Although I guess Slaggert could also be a potential depth guy. Walker and Rifai are almost certainly Growlers bound.

So what's the "In legitimate contention for a day 1 roster spot" list up to now?

Robertson
Steeves
Anderson
Holmberg
Abruzzese
Knies* (If he signs)
Malgin** (Long shot he comes back over before UFA)

Douglas up front for sure. I think one of Rubins or Hollowell will be given long looks as cheap depth... maybe both.

It doesn't feel like the Leafs will need to go out and sign anybody with all these good prospects knocking at the door.

The window is wide open.

EDIT: I forgot about Niemela as well. Could be someone that really blows competition away if he does get signed.

Douglas, Rubins, and Hollowell need more time in the AHL. They may be depth options, but they are not fighting for everyday jobs like the guys on that list can.
