Thats a veteran group they are going with. I'm not saying they are right or wrong. Point is his ability isn't why he isn't there. Young team? I'm sure he is going. Unless you think those mediocre names they chose are somehow better then Niemela.

His ability is 100% why he isn't going. This isn't some boy scout summer camp. It's the biggest event in Finnish sporting. The coach, the players, all of them are facing the biggest event of their lifetimes. The Olympics, even without the NHL, are THE event in the Finnish sporting consciousness. They're not going there to play around. They want to win, and they pick the best team available. Literally millions of Finns will be watching them - the only event in their lives where this happens.

What surprises me more than anything is that they only took two guys out of the Liiga... I guess that explains why next to no one comes straight out of there and into the NHL anymore.

But our boy Pontus Holmberg made it.

We have Knies, Abruzzesse, Holmberg as legitimate prospective Leafs/ current prospects. And we have the likes of Malgin and Herzog there as well.

Herzog must be great in his own end, because he rarely puts up points yet always finds ways to make these teams.

It's been this way for more than a decade, the rise of the KHL being the main culprit. The best Finnish players outside of the NHL play in the KHL, and then the rest are spread between the SHL, the Finnish league and the NLA. I'm quite proud to say that the "best defender in the Finnish League" I was hyping up in earlier posts was picked to the Olympic team - I'm not completely ignorant after all. ;)

Follow the money. Fairly sure Liiga pays less than the other leagues.

I would still argue that the top scoring defenseman in the Liiga deserves legitimate consideration, but it is not like they took a similar guy who was just worse. They just took different guys... And guys who have more a lot more experience. Nothing wrong with that. It's not like the guys they took are scrubs either. They have a lot of former NHLers on the back end, and then a couple of guys in their 30's I guess they see as leadership.

Not to take away from him as a player as I think he's actually a pretty decent 2 way forward from the games I've watched. But he does play for Swiss and the country isn't exactly loaded with high-end players. I think Herzog could've cut it as an NHL player had he been more patient with his transition to the NA game but I guess our incompetent management team at the time really dropped the ball.

Looking at that defense group they took, Niemela would've been as good as most of them.

Which LD prospect is the closest to becoming an NHL player in the leafs system? Rubins? Kral?

Appears as though Joey Anderson is going to get a well deserved look on the fourth line tmw. I am not sure if they'd have him take line rushes in practice if he wasn't going to check in.

Hopefully that is the case, I think he could really help give us a much needed shot in the arm down the lineup. If so, hopefully he makes good on his opportunity.

I hope Dahlstrom is better than Biega.

Dahlstrom has looked better recently in the AHL, and he is more of a defensive defenseman than Biega. Also much larger, but not really physical.

I am okay with giving him a chance at this point. He can't be any worse than Biega and he gives Dermott the freedom to move the puck and take chances offensively, which is something that maybe he needs to finally gain some comfort back in his game.

Engvall may have made more sense on the 4th line since he can cover Spezza at center and allow Simmonds to stay at RW, but at the same time, he worked well on the 3rd line.

Anderson is much better than Clifford at least so hopefully we can finally have a 4th line that demands respect. We have been a 3 line team for far too long, and while those three lines have been damn good, it would be nice to have a 4th line which can at least help shut things down and contribute some energy.

He has come up a few times and got 4th line minutes, has not impressed me once.
Maybe 4th line type minutes/expectations are not for him, maybe we need to see him on a 3rd line. But so far, id move him for a 3rd or 4th if we could get it.

If he's the sweetener to move on from a Ritchie or Mrazek, I am okay with it.

How exactly would they define a "racial gesture"? Racial epithet sure but gesture?

AHL player gets 30-game ban for racist gesture

The American Hockey League on Friday suspended San Jose Barracuda forward Krystof Hrabik for 30 games after he made a racist gesture toward Boko Imama of the Tucson Roadrunners in a Jan. 12 game.
A source told ESPN that Hrabik, 22, imitated the movements of a monkey in a taunt that targeted Imama, who is Black

Man how much shit does this guy have to deal with??? I am sure this is just par for the course for hockey players of color, but f*** me.

I know the last time this shit happened the league only gave Brendon Manning a 5 game suspension, which led to Boko having to set him straight the next time they played. I am sure Boko wanted his pound of flesh whether it was a 5 or 40 game suspension, and rightfully so, but when the league gives out next to no punishment for shit like this it puts the spotlight back on the victim (Boko) to get that retribution. Wherein the entire hockey world had that next meeting circled on their calendars waiting to see Boko take Manning to the woodshed. Which is totally f***ed up if you ask me.

As shitty as it is to keep hearing these stories, this is the only way this nonsense will get out of the game. 30 games definitely packs a punch, but I honestly don't even know if that's enough TBH. I am a firm believer of allowing people who make mistakes to learn and grow, but I am also not a POC so I really don't have any idea on what would constitute as fair punishment for shit like this TBH.

All I know is they are at least trending in the right direction going from a 5 game suspension to 30

Douglas scraps former Leaf prospect Jamie Devane and edges him out. Devane is a legitimate super heavyweight.

And shocker, former Leaf prospect Hallander scores.

I thought there was a Marlie game day thread? Anyways whose the Marlies goalie tonight. He looks brutal. Hope he isn’t a prospect.
Kallgren. 3 goals on 21 shots isn't horrible for Marlie standards and he's been a stud the entire season.

Devane ate a few in that one, the refs had to come in as Devane turned away. You could see Douglas let up and ask if he was alright. Devane went to the dressing room and he hasn't returned yet.

Douglas kind of reminded me of Chara here. With that extra bit of size he can land big shots at will. I know how tough to handle Devane usually is too. Pretty impressive.
