Gogolev, Kressler, Ovchinnikov, Fusco, Rindell, Peksa would be next at their positions.

Some observations:
- Our D prospects are very old for prospects, not many that look like legitimate NHL threats, it's worse than I thought there
- G depth is better than I thought (because it's my list I get to include Petruzelli), likely to get at least one NHL G from there IMO
- RW is kind of shallow as far as ceiling goes, but I like their floors
- LW is stacked
- C isn't that bad since Voit/Tverberg/Steeves could all potentially move to the middle
- LD looks like somewhere we will definitely get a bottom pair D from

Good job prepping this. I would have put Rubins higher, given he's already played for us in the NHL this year, and looked pretty good doing it. Minor quibble.

As far as future comments, LW is indeed stacked.

Needs from there, really depend on what you see happening with this team going forward. If you project that this team will find playoff, and maybe SC success, you assume that the top four are here for quite some time. Tavares is signed to the end of 24/25, and you'd think Matthews/Marner/Nylander would sign again. If so, the questions become... what is Tavares at that stage of his career? Is he still a 2C, or is that a need? Clearly, the top C, and top two RW would be filled for some time.

"If" you use these assumptions, the needs become bottom six C's, bottom six wingers, and bottom pairing D.... plus maybe a C to develop if Tavares trends down, towards a 3C. Clearly you target a guy like McBain, and Marc McLaughlin (more likely to go to Boston), as future C's as potential NCAA UFA's this coming year.

It's great to see us drafting a guy like Knies, who has both skill, and size.. but I do hope that we look for size, as we could use that in our future needs... not useless size though... but balance in the prospects is always good.

Abruzzese is leading the NCAA in PPG?

We need to move some guys out for 2nd and 3rd rounders this year. We need to draft centers and rd. thanks for doing this.

Not much to argue with on this list TBH

I think I only have a couple swaps I'd make. I have Holmberg ahead of Abramov at the moment, although that gap is slowly starting to shrink with Abramov's improved production with his increased role. I see both players as having similar upsides, I just think Holmberg might have a slight edge on adaptability.

It's odd to think of Malgin being our top RW prospect, but he seems to be making waves in the swiss league. Would not be surprised to see him on the Leafs next year. We now know Kyle was trying to make that happen for this year, I imagine he will do the same next year. I personally think we have some higher upside prospects in that RW slot, but when you factor in the likelihood of playing with the Leafs I think you have to lean Malgin. As much as I love Tverberg and what he has done thus far, he still represents a bit of a longer shot. Same goes for Miettenen and Ovchinikov. I am probably more bullish on those 2 players than your average Leaf fan. I think they can be impact players if they hit that ceiling, but their floors just aren't good enough to justify putting them higher on that list.

I'd probably swap Rubins for Koster as well, and maybe even Kokkonen. For the same reasons as Malgin. It really just seems like a matter of time before this guy plays regular minutes for the Leafs. Was quite impressed with his play during his call up. He has all of the raw tools to be an everyday bottom pairing guy in the NHL.

Lastly I'd also have Peksa as the 5 Goalie, Ahktyamov as 4, and Scott not ranked. Just not confident Scott will ever rebound. Would be a fantastic story, but I just don't think I see it happening at this point. From a goaltending standpoint he is still relatively young, but he has one nothing but regress since his final junior year. with our log jam in the crease at the AHL/ECHL level I just don't see him getting that opportunity to grow his game anymore. Not with us at least. I'd still cheer for him if we released/moved him. Poor kid had a lot of promise before injuries derailed his career. Truly a shame.

no matter how you shake it though, that is a very impressive list of prospects for a team that has been "competing" for the last 5.5 years. Not to mention we have 2 young guns on our active roster as it stands. Future is bright for the buds!

Great work with the chart. Nice and clean.

The shallow defense is likely exaggerated cause Sandin + Liljegren just graduated. Otherwise, Sandin + Lily + Niemala + Kral is a decent pool of young defensive prospects.

LW is unquestionably brilliant. Crazy depth.

C is decent but no anchor prospect. RW + G are weak points.

you'd like to trade for a worse defenseman?

I get wanting to add that type of player but there should be depth guys available that fit that mold at the deadline that won't cost you one of those guys.
I think he means a defenceman that brings some other weapons to the fight we have enough puck movers need some guys who can box out and fight in the corners doesn’t have the be a massive slow brute but someone with some edge

Our next 4C? I recognize he has played LW as well.
I think he has enough smarts to play up and down the lineup but ideally, a middle 6 W or bottom 6 C is his spot. Would love to see him play alongside Willy someday.

Our next 4C? I recognize he has played LW as well.

He's trending better than that right now. .84 PPG in the 3rd best league in the world playing as a 1C on a playoff team dominating shot shares.

Engvall is objectively decent 3rd line player and he never came close to this type of dominance in the SHL (granted he came over at the end of his 21 year old season and Holmberg will at the end of his 22)

Yeah that playoff run last year was eye opening. Legit elite production for age.

Only question was whether he could keep it up. And yup.

Dark horse for a roster spot next season?

SDA is my dark horse. Seems unlikely but he's been very good for the Marlies and I think he'd do very well in a depth role + 2nd PP specialist.

Steeves seems like a shoe in to make it. Robertson and Amirov are good bets but not guaranteed right away. Niemela is a 50/50 but more likely the following year.

I thought Holmberg seems like he could break in on the 4th line LW okay, good 2-way instincts.

Robertson was a good bet I think if he didn't get injured, I guess it'll depends how he plays in his return to the AHL and what kind of training camp he has. Amirov I am just hoping they can convince to play in the AHL next year.

Niemela I figure is the year after next, either AHL or NHL. I was surprised he extended in LIGA, figured he outgrew the league but there might be some Olympic motivations behind the extension.

I would prefer Niemela spend 1 year with the Marlies before making the big club. Give him a year to get acclimated to NA and fill out. Would prefer he comes in at around 185lbs.

SDA seems like long odds, but I appreciate your optimism.
I’d love to see some of the advanced stats on him, actually….but I’m not sure who’s gathering those for the Marlies.
Steeves seems like a lock, Joey Anderson is a motivated guy right now, Holmberg looks like a mix-n-match fit, Rubins as an extra D. Robertson if he gets healthy.

I think he'll surprise. He looked solid in pre-season. A full season with the Marlies and next training camp he might be that dark horse for a spot. He's not the new shiny guy, but his production has been pretty good and always stands out in a good way when I watch. His skating speed might be the one thing holding him back.

Leafs could have an influx of young players take over in the next season or two. I'm hoping the Leafs give them a chance. I don't want more Ritchies or Cliffords added.

SDA would probably be the first guy (besides Hollowell) I would move if I needed to give up a solid but unspectacular prospect in a trade. The only value he really has to us is being a center (and a RH one at that), but I am not sure he sticks there in the NHL and he would be fairly low down on the list as a winger (relative to the other guys we have). He has a lot to work on and he will be turning 22 this year. He is not doing poorly but relative to Abramov/Steeves and even Douglas, I am not sure he has done all that well. Curtis Douglas is nearly a foot taller, is not known as an "offensive" guy, and is on an AHL deal at the same age as SDA and he only has 2 less points (1 less goal) than SDA in a mostly bottom 6 role vs. SDA's top 6 role with PP time.

I think that can be a possibility if Sandin can excel in the 2nd half in the top 4. Then going into next season we can have a cost control Defence.

Rielly - Brodie
Sandin - ?
Kral - Liljegren/Holl

We would trade Muzzin sign a veteran that can potentially sub with Kral and incase of injures. The ? Becomes who’s in the top 4. Do they go Lilejgren? Holll? Or sign/trade for someone else.

One thing about that is if we can replace Muzzin with somebody far cheaper we would free up enough cash to do something about the right side

yeah that’s possible but depends what Campbell gets. I’m assuming some of the money would go to him. There’s also Mrazek on the books too.

Mrazek and Ritchie plus Muzzin would be worth about 11M so even after you replace them and give soup a pay rise you're looking at a nice chunk of change to go spend

Kral is not going to be ready next year, and since he is waiver exempt, it does not really make sense to rush him either.

I do not see the issue of just using the same mix of defensemen we currently have and just taking some of the tough minutes from Muzzin/Holl and giving them to Sandin/Liljegren/Dermott.

Then after next year, when Muzzin only has one year left, Holl is a UFA, and Sandin/Liljegren are hopefully ready for full time top 4 duty, you can have something like:

Rielly - Brodie
Sandin - Liljegren
Kral/Rubins - Vet UFA
Vet LD #7
---
Kral/Rubins - Niemela
Kokkonen - Villeneuve
Vet UFA - Vet UFA
