Not surprising, this being 21 year old season he'd still have a 3 year ELC- next summer it drops to 2, effectively burning an elc year while staying home and making KHL money instead of likely AHL
It’s his 20 year old season I believe. Not sure if that changes anything about what you said in regards to his ELC though.

Seeing how these kids are doing and seeing what Carolina was able to do getting Guentzel. I hope we can stack our farm like they have down the road. Keep the picks, draft. People said yesterday ohh why didn’t we get this guy? Because we don’t have any 2nd and 3rd rounders. Carolina didn’t even have to touch their top prospects because they were able to draft a ton of talent.

Whatever happens from today until 2026 it is what it is. But 2026 onwards I really hope we get back to drafting more and getting more young talent into the system
Exactly. Carolina's prospect pool wasn't top 10 and they didn't give up one of their top 5 prospects. You only dream of giving a haircut like this to a trading partner. Those are the types of prospects you accumulate with 2-3-4 picks.. Its a catch 22 though because these are the kind of deals that put clubs over the top and if you are in that mode every year you are going to be depleted after a while.

I think if KD of 2018 had last years experience, never mind the Tavares thing, he would have moved young offensive talent like Mango and Kapy for young D early on rather than hanging onto them in hopes of creating a dangling blitzkreig. Late Dubas had a much better understanding of a balanced lineup but his stubborn attachment to a big 4 prevented him from ever correcting it.

I hope you are right about 2026 but it wasn't just trades, it was getting raped at the negotiation table on big deals that cost them high value to work around. And after seeing Tre serve his keester up to Willie's agent this year I am not sure if that will change because I think he will be around longer than Shanahan. Of course its likely to be years before they develop elite internal talent again so maybe they won't have the opportunity to get squeezed like that.

Really he didn't do a lot. Same age as Tverberg and Niemela who are B prospects and a mile behind them. They come and go and he didn't light it up. I think next season the difference between him and these other two would have just gotten greater.
He's a khl lifer lol 8

Know that we know we're keeping the pick, who do people like in our area?

I've seen Henry Mews a bunch living in Ottawa and he looks like a good pick. Pretty average sized at 6 feet but he's a RHD with very good offensive tools, pretty good mobility and seemed to do well defensively. I read some are not as high on him because of his consistency but he's slated to go late 1st or early 2nd. Almost a PPG and 2nd in scoring for the 67s as a defenseman. Very impressive to me.

Another one would be Cole Hutson. Some say he's more impressive than his brother in terms of overall ability and more physical/aggressive. He's lightweight (bigger than his older brother) but the kind of high end playmaker that screams high reward late in the first round.

The Elick talk reminds me of this board's consensus on Schneider. Both an organizational need and a likely BPA in our range.

I'd be more comfortable walking away with Elick in the mid 20s than Schneider in the teens. I personally think Elick projects as a better puck mover, too.

Should be a plethora of defensemen available in the mid-late 1st.

Elick is my desired target as well.

Looks like he’d check off a lot of boxes.

Not to be that guy but since we still have our 1st (and 6 others) could we get a stickied draft thread like we used to have and keep this one for guys in the system?
It is pretty wild that for a forum the size of the Leafs we basically just don't have any thread dedicated to the draft at the top. I get that there is some supposed limit on the pinned threads....but other team forums seem to get away with having like double what we have here lol

Yeah, we just have so much going on! We try to not have it so cluttered as other board haha We'll definitely pin it closer to, though

Wouldn't the draft thread be more of a relevant thread on this board to pin than the visiting Toronto thread? That thread has barely had any posts since December

It is great that we still have our 1st, makes the lead up to the draft that much more interesting. The lottery tickets we have with the 4th and three 5ths will give us a chance to build out our organizational depth.

In an alternate universe somewhere the Leafs signed Durzi and Dewar to ELC’s out of development camp.

And Holy Cowboy Batman. What a season.

Looks like we’re heading for another night where our division rival treats this game like the Stanley cup final and we treat it like just another regular season game.
