What kind of expectations do you have for Niemela? He has looked good this year in my opinion.
Hoping he takes over full time #1D for the Marlies next season and gets a few call ups to give him a taste but this isnt a team or coach that will let him develop in the NHL, just look at how shitty they treat Liljegren.

It makes sense from a development standpoint tbh. Wright would've been better off in the NCAA than the O his last year. Next year Cowan may be in a similar position where playing for BU for example would be more beneficial than a year in London.

Perhaps the NHL-CHL agreement might be tweaked?

I believe there has been some discussions about allowing certain under 20's (without the 5 years) in the AHL.

Dermott, Sandin and now Liljjegren can't develop into top 4. Might have to look at the organization. They can't develop d man

All of these defensemen kind of tweeners. Mid sized defensemen not big and strong enough to be physical shutdown defensemen at the NHL level and not enough dynamic offensive ability to produce. I have a sneaky feeling Neimela will be another in the list but obviously hope I am wrong. Will add I do think Liljegren is better then Sandin and Dermott and not writing him off.

But sandin and lily were really nsync it was fun to watch I think they would be better together

Really peel things back.
Haven't developed a centre or goalie other than the obvious Matthews and Kadri.

Shocking that there really isn't a 3rd-4th line centre drafted and developed. Every team has them.
Seems like an easy thing to do.

Rielly is the only Dman too haha.

But again, I still have faith in Liljegren. High ankle sprain with bottom pairing minutes playing with broken down Gio (he isnt the same as he was when he first got here, obviously. they were killing it together then), tough to play high level in the circumstances.

I'm not willing to give up on him and watch him become Stralman for the lightning.

Maybe getting Muzzin and Giordano next year to work with our defenseman would be ideal, they're pros that have just finished playing.

Or steal a Jr team's coaches that develop elite defenseman somewhat consistently.

I don't really see a development issue. Drafting just hasn't been good enough. Hunter took a bunch of Dmen when he was running the draft and it was comically bad. He took guys who couldn't even Crack the AHL.

Once Hunter left they just didn't have many picks and they took very, very few dmen with the picks they did have. I think most would say our drafting has been better lately but with the lack of dmen picked you'll be hard pressed to find an impact Dmen.

Go back further and we're just not a well run organization. Drafting, development and pretty much everything was garbage for 30+ years before that.

I don't disagree.

It feels like Hunter was taking bigger guys hoping something would hit.

Dubas opted for smaller guys and I think you can maybe have 1 of those guys who is smaller that produces a ton of offense but they better be fast as hell. Most championship defenses are larger in size for the grind of the playoffs.

I like our work since the Knies draft, we've done well with what we have.

Last decade hasn't been great for draft Defenders.

Wonder if they'll offer an ELC to Albin Sundin. I was seeing his name on twitter alot as an inivte that caught the Leafa brass attention. I think even Modenhaur was quoted as saying he was tough to play against. I doubt he'd sign a minor league deal with us vs. playing in Sweden, but definitely someone to keep an eye on.

Does anyone know if he can be invited to rookie camp? maybe get 1 more look at him before tendering him an ELC? I'd like to see how he competes in the traverse city tournament.
Sundin wasn't picked to play for Sweden's U20 team and has only played a handful of games for the Frolunda men's team; playing some in the Swedish third league and spending most of the year with the Frolunda U20 team.

He is eligible for the 2024 Draft but it isn't looking likely.

We've got a bunch if idiots in the Prospect forum downplaying Cowan's season because Canada struggled at the world juniors

He's only got a 17 or 18 game point streak going..
How many underage kids have excelled for Canada? It's a U20 tournament, he's still eligible next year. There shouldn't be an expectation that he was going to excel.

We suck at developing defenders but equally suck at evaluating them.

We either draft extremely low IQ fridges in Middleton, Nielsen, Greenway, Rasasnen, Gordeev or smaller vanilla transition defenders that don't excel at anything in Sandin, Dermott, Kokkonen, Hollowell, Rindell, and Koster (who I actually like).

Would like to see us start looking at defenders that actually project well like the Fehervary's, Siegenthaler's, Carlo's, Luneau's, Korczak's, etc. Size, skating and defensive IQ. Generate less hype post-draft in junior leagues but actually provide value to a contender as finished products.

If you're going smaller, bet on obvious elite traits (Zellweger, Hutson, Gulyayev, Girard).

Chadwick seems to have come out of nowhere.

Cowan was a very interesting pick in that the minute he was drafted, tons of people said it was an absolutely horrific pick and a bigtime reach.

Then he instantly crushes it in the prospects camp, shows very well at the main camp, makes team Canada and now leads the OHL in PTS/G.

I would say there's actually many non Leafs fan's that are hoping this pick busts so they can say they were right all along because at the current pace this is trending to be a phenominal pick when such a large group thought it was horrible.

It's even surprising that we have a first round pick that is lighting up the OHL while playing a good all around game and the main thread discussing him is only like 10 pages.
