Wheeler :
The Leafs’ pool breaks down into three tiers, including a wide middle tier which is a sign of their decent depth and also the lack of top-end talents to divide the top of the pool into smaller tiers. Those tiers are: 1-4, 5-13, 14+.

Nice to see 2 Goalies in the top 5.
Is a Wheeler ranking legit?

A list with Greb at 7 seems incredibly suspect to me. He's very clearly in our top tier, and debatably #1.

What he did as a 19YO in the KHL would have been enough to get him into the top tier. But after taking another big step this year he is putting himself into blue chip territory.

If you're on Twitty and don't follow either of these guys yet, I can't recommend them enough for prospect info;

I think its better for us. We the hardcores know exactly who we hope the kid is and why we hope he is that way, most casuals have never heard of him so if he skyrockets up to "top 3 prospect" or something else that is "unexpected" it would probably make a bunch of the dumb dumbs think hes Kaprizov and be pissed when he isnt.

I've been calling him our Kaprizov since last season, too late lol.

I don't love his or the other Athletic prospect writer, Corey Pronmans, rankings very much but that doesn't matter it's just their opinion. I just have never thought they were very good or projected all that well.

We should be near the bottom. We've been good for quite a while now, we've traded a ton of picks, our most impactful pick since the big 3 unfortunately tragically passed away. But, we don't need top of the lineup lottery tickets, we need guys to come through and supplement the roster and we seem to have a few guys that might be able to do that in the years to come.

As for Greb, I'm as excited for him, we all are, but I'm not going to get my hope up too much until he does it in the AHL/NHL. I've personally never seen him play but I'd imagine his transition to NA hockey could be difficult for him.

Hoping for Kaprizov and expecting Kaprizov are two different things. If youre expecting him to be Kaprizov then I hope you dont turn on him when he gets here.

Yeah, I figure he needs a bit of seasoning when he gets here, hoping for a good 2nd-3rd line guy, nice tools.

What I've liked about the highlights, is his willingness to get physical.

Plus:

Passing
Skating

No idea about his defensive play.

The read on him is he seems willing to learn but has a ways to go.

That might be what a year in the AHL can go towards.

I can't tell from that wording. If the rules were changed can a player play his 16/17 aged years in the CHL and then leave to the NCAA or is it only after CHL eligibility runs out. Could hurt the USHL, BCHL, etc if players can play in the CHL pre draft and then go to college once they turn 18.

Unless the tweeter is horrible at English, the key words for me is "after your CHL career is done." So once a prospect reaches 21-22, they can go play in the NCAA. The NCAA has already started allowing its athletes to gain sponsorships and income outside of school.

If a player decides to leave the CHL at 18 and not come back then his CHL career is also over. If it was meant only as a thing for 20 year olds(or 21 in the case of overagers) they probably would have worded it "when your CHL eligibility runs out". It would seems strange to me for a 18 year CHLer to not be eligible but a 20 year old one would be. The reason they aren't now is because NCAA considered the CHL a pro league under the dumb NCAA being paid rules. Once changed they'd either not consider it that or specific pro league to NCAA being allowed under new restrictions. Either way it would be allowed for both.

I asked because I found the wording weird and vague. Perhaps worded that way to demonstrate that flipping back and forth multiple times not allowed? Once you leave the CHL to go to NCAA your CHL career is now over, you can't come back. Perhaps vice versa(NCAA to CHL back to NCAA) also won't be allowed. Or maybe it is the way you say. Seems like a reasonable conclusion as well, I just wasn't sure because it didn't seem specific to me. I myself read 2 different possibilities into it.

It makes sense from a development standpoint tbh. Wright would've been better off in the NCAA than the O his last year. Next year Cowan may be in a similar position where playing for BU for example would be more beneficial than a year in London.
