Player Discussion: Mark S Discussion

Good point. I have been at work all day and I assume there has not been a media scrum update today on him, Ehlers, or Perfetti?
bones said scheif said he feels better today and listed him as d2d which might not be a good thing, ehlers will practice tomorrow

I think had scheifele had any major damage to his shoulder is would be in a sling right now but he is without one
Good to hear. I also think if it was a broken collar bone or separated shoulder or something. You know right away and are not coming back in the game, even with the adrenaline rush.

Man bones throwing a smoke grenade.
I really think it’s .1% chance Scheifele plays tomorrow.

But Scheifele at 50% is probably better than anyone that would come into the line to replace him (excluding Ehlers I guess)

They've got to play Scheif with the right players this year and not some of the lower line players he played with last year.
I'd like to see him on a line with Perfetti and one of Vialrdi/Nino/Ehlers.

Jesus H, this has nothing to do with being "clutch". Let's review what exactly a GWG is...

The game winning goal is determined as the goal by the winning team that allows it to be one more than the opponent. So yes, this could be a dramatic OT winner but it could also be just the "lucky winner" in an 8-1 romp. It's a meaningless statistic without a deep dive into each game to determine the actual impact.

Of course, the NHL won't track GWG's against to see which player f***ed up the most to allow it. I'll bet 55 would do well in those stats, too.

Agreed, but that was a bit affected by the lack of forward depth the Jets have last year. If Perfetti-Scheifele-Ehlers is a line, they are going to put up big points.

Agreed,

As long as KC is away from scheifele I think you'll have a making of a good line in net-offense.

I wouldn't mind Nino up there with either either one of the two wingers you listed @Weezeric . I think size+physicality+defensive play mixed with the fact he can finish his chances would add a unique skillset compared to the other winger.

of players w/ similar mins played to scheifele - he had among the worst finishing from his linemates. i think he will have his best offensive year with a better linemate mix vs last year as both of you suggested.

I don’t think there are too many bad ways to mix up the top 9. The days of Appleton playing in the top 6 are over I think, barring huge injury trouble.

None of the four belong anywhere near the top 6 or top 9 for that matter!

apples okay 4th liner

gagner done

Barron 4th line but has potential

Kulman AHL

kuHLmAn -- it's in the name.

Yep. Apples on the 4th means someone better on the 3rd. It's the all-new 2023-24 Jets Reverse Trickle Effect!

I wonder where Kups and The Red Barron slot in here -- gonna be a dogfight for those hopefuls who are looking to play as wingmen for Permanent 3rd line C Lowry.

Just checking the numbers and - you're never going to believe this - the guys who score the most goals, also score the most GWGs! :sarcasm:

Top 5 goalscorers on the Jets for the past 5 seasons, in descending order:
Connor, Scheifele, Ehlers, Wheeler, Laine

Top 5 GWG on the Jets for the past 5 seasons, in descending order:
Connor, Scheifele, Ehlers, Wheeler, Laine

Aside: It's impressive that Ehlers managed that without much time on PP1 and getting only 16:30 TOI per game (as opposed to Scheifele who averages 21:11 TOI and being a shooter on PP1 the entire 5 year period).

Thanks for the numbers.

You may have missed the memo that Ehlers is a soft, broken diva of a player who fails to show up in important games and lacks clutchiness like no other Jet.

It would def be interesting to look further into "clutchiness" -- it's a longstanding narrative in sports, and I wonder if its borne out by facts ("important" games grather than Tuesday night in January specials) and how it lines up with the larger patterns you ID (those who score the most goals also score the most GWGS) and those ID by fans and media (the Tkachuk Factor). Looks like the Jets are now drafting for clutchiness in Rutger Mac and Barlow, etc. Should they just be drafting for scoriness?

can't even post something remotely positive about scheifele with out people getting upset it's actually pretty sad... wonder whose going to be the next whipping boy when he's gone

Who hasn’t been a whipping boy on the Jets. Ehlers gets shit on all the time, Wheeler did, PLD did, Pionk yup, Connor use to be oddly immune until fans have woke up to the fact he can’t defend. Everyone gets buried in Winnipeg by its insecure fan base. Same goes for almost every other player playing for a Canadian team when they are struggling and they all are struggling. Seriously, Canadian hockey fans on balance are way too intense (psycho) and love to eat their own.

from what i calculated

when tied or down-1 (regular season/all-strengths) scheifele has 21 goals. the league leader is McDavid at 31, then Pasta at 30. 6 goals separate Point at #3 to Scheifele/Karlsson/Tkahuck/Crosby at a tie starting at 17th

A reminder that Scheifele has been the Jets' most consistent goal-scorer in the playoffs, and one of the top per-minute playoff scorers since 2018. The Jets have been a mess in the playoffs (1-8 record) when Scheifele has been out of the Jets' line-up.

Scheifele might need to be moved for various reasons (personal and team-level), but I think his impact has been under-estimated by many.

Oh we are going to miss Scheifele whether he goes or stays. At some point he ages out and we are searching for a #1 centre again. PLD would have helped but he never wanted to stay. I imagine Mark wants out now so we are faced with both Mark and PLD being gone and we didn’t build a back up plan so we have no true replacements in the pipe line yet that we know of.

Chipman and Chevy decided to go for it these past two seasons so this is the downstream effect. That being said I am not scared of change with this team. Even with Vezna buyck and 55 we weren’t a contender so I have way less fear to fail forward than Chipman does.
