Player Discussion: Mark S Discussion

The Jets are only a good team if Scheifele is scoring and Helle is elite. The lack of goals has been....disturbing. I'll reserve judgement until the playoffs are over but it's not looking good.
Its interesting that Hellebuyck isn't being talked about more. The malaise that had inflicted this team has spread to him and not that our losing streak is his fault but we are going to need much better from him if we are to make any noise at all in the playoffs.

As for Schiefele, I really don't know what the truth is with him. If it was just him that was playing like shit then I'd be carrying a pitchfork just like everyone else.

However, it's hard to find any of our top talent outside of Morrissey that is playing up to their standards and that's more worrisome.

What a fall from grace for Scheif. He went from being my favourite player, a beloved symbol of the Jets return who looked poised to spend his entire career here as a Jets 2.0 icon, to someone that I, and many others, are ready to drive to the airport ourselves.

I don’t know what happened with him. I didn’t watch last night’s game and haven’t watched for the past five or six games, due mostly to the lack of effort players like Scheif have given as of late, but reading the PGT and it seems Scheif stuck out in a negative way, just like he did during the games I watched before I took that break.

His give-a-shit level is insultingly low, and it almost feels like he’s throwing games on purpose. For most players, that’s unacceptable, but he has a letter on his jersey … beyond unacceptable. It’s sad, I don’t know what happened, but I think it’s time for him to go.

I’ll still remember the happy times … like when he scored four points in our first pre-season game back against Columbus, or when he broke out in the back half of 2015-16, or when he played like a man possessed in the 2017-18 playoffs…

It’s a shame how it’s going to end, and it’s sad to think about what could’ve been.

The tail of two seasons (first half and second half) is interesting.

Need Scheifele to be way better but i'm just as concerned about Connor . As bad as Scheifele has been Connor has been just as bad, Connor has to be scoring or else he's a huge liability on the ice. Very frustrating. Don't have any issues with Helly, you aren't going to win many games if all you can do is score 1 frigging goal a game, don't care who you have in net .

Sure looked like Scheif played most of the game at C rather than RW and his lack of drive down the middle/lack of back checking really hurts the team.

Would be great to see the stats of how many times we lined up at wing for the games we won and how many times he was C for the Calgary game...

The more i think about Scheifele, the more i get f'ing angry. You cant be bothered to give a shit about your team mates, city, and organization, who drafted you earlier than expected and gave you every chance to succeed. They brought you along slowly when you weren't yet ready, and helped you morph into a star. Atleast give it your all on the ice and quietly ask behind closed doors to be moved in the offseason. Dale Hawerchuk would be ashamed of you. F this guy already. F'ing quitter. Bench his ass for the rest of the season.
This.........................

Both Scheifele and Dubois took 11 draws each in the Calgary game, Scheif was 55%, Dubois 27%.

The Jets could have very easily got the 1st goal of the game on their 1st PP, on a clearly won Scheifele draw, where he goes to the front of the net and lifts the Calgary defender's stick in time to give PLD the easy back door tip in, from Morrissey, that he missed. That's on the highlight package for everyone to see.

I'd say that Scheifele played more wing than centre against Calgary, judging by the way he played the boards. But with Dubois not very good on the draw he did get a few more of those, in important situations.

The Flames 1st goal, which was another tap in, from Scheifele himself, missed by Dubois, Connor is the 4th guy on a 3-2 for the Jets that gets in the play and turns over the puck, with Scheifele behind the net, where Connor skates to, that leads to a 2-1. Maybe Scheifele should have been backchecking earlier, Pionk got picked by Andersson to stop him from getting back, but damn that's a real tough one to pin on Scheif. That's not an odd man rush if Connor doesn't turn over the puck...in the position Scheifele was already in...

Scheifele again finds himself in a good scoring position on a pass from Connor on a well played zone entry at the end of the 2nd that he ripped, and left a tap in rebound for Morrissey, who doesn't handle it clean.

2nd Flames goal Scheif loses the draw, and can't get the puck back off the boards, which leads to the Jets giving up a 2 vs. 4 down low goal, not sure Scheif should have backchecked there.

3rd goal, Dubois is 2 stick lengths from Zadorov after he comes around the net. He never makes up that stick length, perhaps Scheifele should have skated hard across the rink hard to cover a guy who wasn't his man, but he didn't and the coach didn't bench him next shift, he benched Dubois and put Lowry out instead. So what does that mean?

I know it's the most acceptable thing on these boards to blame Mark Scheifele and his effort for every loss. Even if he plays well, he's the reason why the Jets lose.

Scheifele is so on and off... game to game. When he is on you so much want him on the team, but when he is off, you definitely want him somewhere else. And because of his ice time and usage, he is a factor every game. Every game he plays he is either helping you or hurting you... there is no middle road.

He didn't play the last game. Is it possible he has some type of an injury that he is playing through?
They didn't sit KC?

Probably had to sit Dubois already, and didn’t want to slot Scheif back to C, so scratched him too. :sarcasm:

That game was optional for the core group. KC and Lowry elected to play because that would mean they completed a full 82 game season. Lowry said it’s rare to accomplish that so wanted to do it.

Only thing more entertaining than Scheif's heel turn these past couple seasons would be redemption in the playoffs...

I would settle for him to just not get injured or suspended

The Bret Hart heel turn has been epic though. I am fine with a face or heel but whatever your lane please commit. EK9 was a world class heel but the guy never cheated me as a fan with his effort once. He was a blue collar player on the ice and a train wreck off the ice. The brooding, self entitled, half assed, I only try when I get my way and am on the attack heel or baby face is equally annoying to me.

To be fair, EK9 put as much effort into the chirping the refs between plays as he did playing... huge part of our high penalty rate imo

I'm just hoping that scheif identifies himself as a playoff performer now. This was the case last time around....until the incident. And I still contend that it looked a lot worse than it was.

Yup………..and 55‘s animated diaper baby routine with the refs has to have some sort of negative effect one would think.

it bears repeating. he has 40 goals?

I'd like to think I'm a Jets fan that pays attention, and, I watch the games. If you would have asked me yesterday to guess the # of goals he has I'd peg it at 25.
42 goals which is more than 1/6 of the team's goals this year. A team that just barely made it to 3 goals per game, which is below league average.

But an 8 game stretch is all anyone seems to remember. Because it looked a lot like Scheifele's disinterested play last year.

When Kyle Connor puts up 1g 1a and is a -13 in the same stretch as Scheifele not much is said about him. No one is clamouring for him to get out of town. I wonder why that is...

Maybe it's the A that Scheif wears. Maybe he's just not handsome enough for Winnipeg fans. Or maybe it's the expectations that come when you are the only guy in Jets history to score 14 playoff goals, and the team implodes without you.

I can't wait to hear fans complain when we get lunch bucket guys replacing our superstars, and all of sudden scoring is hard again. I just don't think this market can handle superstars. Maybe Buff, but bad Buff who didn't skate, was overweight, got his fair share of criticism too.

Even with 42 goals its his worst offensive season since his second season! (on ppg basis) And then you look at the defensive numbers and fancy stats.....it's horrendous, there's just no sugar coating it.

It's ok this site is good for disagreements, I think you are right more often than you are wrong. But I can't think of any fan base that holds a hostility towards a guy who finished top 10 in goal scoring this year, more than ours...

What if I said that Mark Scheifele has more career goals in one playoff as a Jet than Connor, Ehlers and Dubois have combined over their time here?

I just don't get some of what you and others say about him...

When he complains to the refs it's usually because he is trying so hard and gets screwed. Showing signs he cares...who else had the balls to say that the NHL doesn't want the Jets to win after he got suspended?

Criticism which is often followed up my he doesn't care about the team, but his body language whenever he gets scored on would indicate otherwise. He's a fierce competitor.

He's terrible defensively...can someone post the stats Perfetti-Scheifele-Wheeler had as a line?

I love watching our very first playoff game where young Mark had to matchup against Getzlaf and Kesler in their primes. He wasn't quite there yet, but you could see we had a player.

8 years later and the luster has completely worn off this player.

I understand and I don't understand.
