Player Discussion: Mark S Discussion

He’s turned into a prima donna diva. If I didn’t already re-up for my season tickets, which I’ve had since day 1, I’d cancel them based on him alone.
I spent quite a bit of time defending Scheifele in the past, now I’d be the first one to volunteer driving him to the airport.
Yup, and what a shame. He was drafted, in part, for 'character', but I just don't think he had the mental capacity to endure fame, money, then not as much money as he thought he deserved, loss, rejection, vilification on social media, and all the shit that comes along with being a hockey star.

PS-I did not renew my personal season ticket share, but I get to see many games through work. Point is--the level of indifference this guy has generated in the fan base, because of his indifference, is a significant threat to the club.

What a fall from grace...

It’s impossible to know what’s up. But what are the options that are most likely ?

He’s hurt ?

Bones is attempting to button down and change the game up a bit before playoffs and sheif isn’t buying it ?

Is this a consequence of true North basically having no accountability throughout the entire time here ? He’s a spoiled brat ?

Has he asked for a trade for a long time now behind closed doors and he was told he wasn’t being traded before the deadline and he’s punishing Chevy in his mind ?

Is there some in room politics going on . A huge divide and it’s affecting him ?

Jealous of PLD ?

Not happy with the deadline ? Feels like he’s wasted his career here with Chevy doing the bare minimum to win?

It’s nothing and he’s just slumping ?

If im missing anything feel free to add I would love to hear it .

What’s everyone’s opinion on what’s going on ?

So frustrating that he can show top 5 talent and then disappear. Scheifele is definitely not easy to figure out and I don't think you can point to one thing. It's combination of a few things...

- lacks self awarness - Maurice, maybe Lowry and Bones for sure have explained to him in detail how he needs to play a full 100 foot game. But does he even recognize when he isn't? Does he realize he can't glide around with an extended stick and call that back checking? Does he see when watching tape that he could take a stride, actually make contact and prevent a goal? Does he not care or does he not have the ability to recognize these things or look at himself in a critical way and correct it?

- entitlement - over the course of his career he has been allowed to continue largely with no consequences. So he is a product of his environment. He thinks he is a star, he thinks he is playing well and for the majority of the time he has gotten away with it. Bring in a dinosaur like Bones to harp on Scheif and he eventually tunes it out. Bottom 6 guys play hard all the time because they know they have no entitlement to ice time or evern their spot on the team.

- lacks character - or work ethic - seems like a good person but a person of character doesn't put himself before the team or quit like he appears to have done this second half.

- self preservation - I really don't buy this theory that Adam Oates is advising him to play to avoid injury but maybe a little of this has crept into his game.

At the end of the day, he has the ability to flip the switch and be a dominant 1C without even over-achieving his ability, just play up to it. So come playoffs if he "decides" to flip and if PLD is healthy in beast mode and Helly is Helly, we have a great chance to go deep. I don't think it's time to bring out our dead yet.

Maybe he never really had those traits, or as prominent as they were made out to be? I would not put it past this local media hyping him up or just fibbing.

In all honesty I started turning the page on him last year. His body language was atrocious and ever since that end of year press conference I 2019 were he just stewed and didn't say anything his attitude has been off.

This year he seemed to have bought in and inwas happy with his play but he's reverted back to that I don't give a f*** player.

I also renewed my tickets but I'm completely happy my share of tickets was largely in the first half this year. The teams play, mostly Mark's has really turned me off the team lately.

I agree with @Ducky10 it's time for him to go. I don't want his attitude and lack of give a shit around this group anymore. It's a shame as he was once my favorite player on the team.

Some talk lately about Chef not getting shots on goal in the last few games.

Was just curious, so these are the number of games he played in where he got no shots on goal over last 5 seasons...

2018-19 : 3
2019-20 : 9
2020-21 : 4
2021-22 : 1
2022-23 : 5

Someone posted saying jets tried trading him, but no one wanted him.
Could be just a rumor

Yeah I have a hard time believing that. The guy has scored a PPG for 6 straight seasons and while he's off that pace this year he's 2 away from 40 goals. If someone like Tony DeAngelo, who alienated his teammates on two different teams, can find a new team, I'm sure Scheifele would have suitors lined up.

Yeah, I'm sure the Jets would have no problem moving him for a good return. Especially with one year left at a bargain amount of 6 million aav.

Talent wise and based on past history of play, there isn't a team that wouldn't want Scheifele on their team, so I think if the Jets put out the word, they would have no issue moving him for a decent return.

I think Scheifele is a good player for what you get and I don't mind him staying long term with the Jets, BUT the thing the Jets need to realize, if they haven't already, is that Scheifele will never be your teams #1C.

And I don't mean a #1C because of his salary or because there just is no one better, I mean he will never have the ability to consistently lift and carry the team on his back when you need it. Not like some of the great centers in this league. He has his moments where you think he can be that good, but then it always falls off. On any Stanley Cup winning team that he would play on, he would be your #2C.

Yep.

A consistent PPG centre with size and speed who does nothing but create chances for linemates when he's on his game, can snipe from pretty much anywhere and who is still in his prime. Some reclamation project.

He's also durable, marketable and Canadian.

Would take about 5 minutes to have teams on the speed-dial, IMO.

Scheifele is a V good offensive player. Legitimate questions on his intangibles, leadership etc I beleive.

Idk i think he could use a change of scenery. I think of it as Kessel from Toronto to PIT. Like I am not sure if he can be counted in on to lead the group intangibly if that makes sense? He'll still score, put up points etc. But I think a less-pressure environment would be ideal for him to really thrive now.

Last summer I thought PIT or BOS would be good spots for him. Vet laden locker rooms where he can just concentrate on playing hockey. Clear leaders in place too. You're probably looking at PO team or cup contenders vying for him aggressively, especially at his cap hit. He doesn't have to lead. Like mentioned before, Kessel didn't have to be a leader, and Taylor Hall in Boston to a lesser extent.

Carolina I think would be another good spot for him as well.

Hate to say it but I'm starting to wonder if his hot start was to bank some points so he can half ass it on the 2nd half He doesn't want be here but is worried totally tanking would scare off other teams from wanting him.

My only fear is that after being traded he plays like the player we all think he can be. Basically dragging his ass on purpose while here. Then performing to his potential once gone. What a slap in the face to Winnipeg fans that would be.

At the end of the day what does it matter if that is what happens. It's not happening for us so might as well get what we can and reset the room.

Interesting that people are talking about him being salty bc of his contract.

I do understand his frustration.... years of being on the best-contract (for the team) or underpaid lists. The feeling of leaving money on the table can beat you up no matter how much you make imo.

However he got an AAV of what young centers with similar career highs got at the time ie: McKinnon, Monahan, Barkov. He has no one but himself to really blame for that or the 8 year length. To take out on the team and tank your play bc of it, imo that's a f***ed up move

I do remember he did change his agent within the last couple years too.

Yup i think its time to part ways and blow it up. Back to Back coaches now that cant get any consistency or long-term buy in from Scheifele. He either doesnt want to be here or doesnt give a shit about whats best for the team, either way its time to say bye bye. Hand the C over to Morrissey, trade Scheifele, PLD, and Wheeler. Re-set the locker room, get a top 6 center out of one of those trades, hopefully sign another top 6 FA center, and pray that you can re-sign Hellebuyck. Time for a rebuild.

I mean you don't see Helle tanking because he's criminally underpaid...
