Player Discussion: Mark S Discussion

I wonder if the narrative shifts from "trade" to "re-sign". There's no question he's one of the games elite players when in the right frame of mind.
as long as the Jets are competing and he's playing at this level i dont think they'd trade him. i think it was paramount to see him under a different coach prior to trading him. it should have happened way sooner though but it is what it is. i think most of the trade talks on here was based on the off-season talk, dreger etc.

re-sign..... he's probably going to command 10M+? mid-to-long term. will he regress back to the last few years during that time-frame if the coach is a problem?

He is for sure, certainly one of the elite generators of chances and pure scorers -- when 55 is on his game he must be very difficult to contain.

FWIW, I thought some of his best plays against FLA were in his own zone, backchecking to break up a play, and then again on the PK, coming back and slowing things down to hand over to PP2 IIRC.

He's also a big guy who tends to spin off a fair few hits -- not as elite in that category as KFC, but few are -- and should be a good bet to adapt his game and perform well through the end of a reasonable next contract, a la newborn Wheeler, if he decides he really wants to be here.

So IDK. He might work out well, or he might want to test the market. He'll definitely have the opportunity if he keeps this up.

If he wants to leave and we have to trade him at next year’s deadline should bring back a pretty penny. Him and Helly as I imagine if he goes we are going to go through a bit of a rebuild after losing such a core piece.

Shuffles

Hawerchuck trained Shuffles with the southern Ontario club (Barrie Colts). Scheif listened to Ducky's message in their brief recruiting meeting where there was no hard sell by the coach (could have signed elsewhere), and perhaps when he is at his best, he may recall his early training.

Ergo

Shuffles is a part of Hawerchuck's legacy.

Ergo

I would like to see him sign a fat contract with the Jets.

Logical? Not really.

The optimal outcome (in my opinion)? Absolutely.

Was that supposed to be a fair as optimal solution is a fair contract not a fat one.

Good point. That line was written with some facetiousness on my part. I am almost certain that recency bias will flex and alter the perceptions of some attracted GMs. Thus it may be that Shuffles will get offers which one might percieve as fat per se. Naturally, I would ALSO love to see a team-friendly, slimmed down variant contract for Shuffles going forward, so as to keep our cap out of trouble.

If he pops 40-45 goals and nets 90-95 points this year things could get gnarly.:)

Having said that his yearly average under PoMo was not that high... but this year *seems* to be panning out differently.

I feel bad about being ready to move on from 55 last year. This is the Schiefele I know and ❤️

Well, it was a big club...

Thought this was interesting from a recent Murat article. I noted the play discussed in the second para when I saw the game yesterday and mentioned it in the PGT -- actually shook my head when I saw it was 55:

Mark Scheifele scored Winnipeg’s first and fourth goals, looking as dangerous as ever in his second-to-last season before needing a new contract. More impressively, considering the degree to which he frustrated previous Jets coaches with his often dismal 200-foot game, Scheifele was not just good defensively — he was exemplary.

Defenceman needed an outlet? Scheifele was there. Winger need someone to drop to? Scheifele was there. He made several plays below his own goal line that helped Winnipeg negotiate its way out of Panthers pressure. On one play early in the first period, with Brenden Dillon under a forecheck, Scheifele made the read to drop low in the zone, picked the puck up, made a highly skilled puckhandling play and found a safer outlet on the far side of the ice.

The sight of Scheifele doing great work low in the Jets zone was uncommon compared to other top centres last season. This season, he’s the example Rick Bowness uses in puck support video sessions.

“Against an aggressive team like these guys, you can’t rely strictly on your D. You have to go back there,” Bowness said when I asked about Scheifele’s effectiveness below Winnipeg’s goal line. “They’re coming hard, you need that third guy low … Mark’s very good at making that read. And when we show a lot of video, it’s usually Mark down low. Showing those breakouts you’re talking about, it’s usually Mark in the video.”

just wondering b/c i don't follow other team's post-games and whatnot closely....

how often do players turn down speaking with the media? what's the reaction if matthews or mcdavid for instance do this?

Since I promised to keep my opinions to myself until after the season is over, I will simply present sans comment this excerpt from Paul Friesen's article a couple of days ago.

Which brings us to our first missive, from Jack, a Jets season-ticket holder in the lower bowl.

Well if there was ANY doubt as to one of the major problems if not THE MAJOR problem with the Winnipeg Jets, Mark Scheifele clearly answered that question yesterday, Jack’s Friday morning email began. When asked why he didn’t come out and talk with the media about him being benched for 12 minutes in the Hurricanes game he said, and I quote, “I didn’t want to”.

At this point, Jack inserted an expletive, with a few exclamation marks for emphasis.

He wasn’t done.

So a 30 year old man with 10 years of NHL experience playing at the highest levels and wearing an ‘A’ on his uniform decided to play the TODDLER CARD and refuse to answer a few questions from the media and instead let a guy who has only been with the Jets for two weeks do his job for him because, “I didn’t want to”.

Jack had obviously been paying attention.

When Scheifele and linemate Kyle Connor refused to take questions after their benching in that Carolina game, recent trade acquisition Nino Niederreiter, the third member of their line, agreed to face the music.

Jack says he could only imagine how this played out in the dressing room, particularly with the other alternate captains, Josh Morrissey and Adam Lowry, who would never pull such a post-game Houdini.

He ended with this: And Wheeler… has to be chuckling inside thinking, “Strip me of the captaincy eh? Now you have a child running the show”.

I get the impression Jack doesn’t wear a No. 55 sweater to games.

If it helps any, at this point I'd rather wear my Pavelec jersey instead of my Scheifele jersey to games!

That whole situation hasn’t set right with me from the get go. Regardless of reasoning or whatever, Scheif or Connor should not have let Nino go out and face the music. Especially Scheif who wears an “A”.

For a while the Jets were searching for a 2C.....We actually always had a 2C in Scheifele and were lacking a 1C

We needed a 1C and 2C - it looks like Scheif is more of a 2RW with his less than stellar decensive play :sarcasm:

Just wait for all the complaining constantly next year when our top two centers are Perfetti and Lowry :)
and that's the crux of it eh

if pld is dealt, and scheifele isn't re-signed you're left with what at top-6C? the UFA market is no-bueno and who is available in the trade market?
