Player Discussion: Mark S Discussion

Well only 1 game in and I’ll be eating a shit ton of crow regarding Mark.
I didn’t want him back at all after last season because I doubted his attitude.
It’s a contract year and it seems like he is happy here, I think that speaks to a new dynamic likely within the roster.
Looks like I was wrong yet again

This is not Mark's contract year. He has 2 years to go.

This would be a big decision year for the org re: Mark's future with the team though.

You are too tough on yourself. That said, I hope he has a huge year for the Jets. :)

I wouldn't be unpacking that crow confit just yet. As you say, it is just one game. Plenty of time for him to revert to bad habits, especially if he thinks D play is diminishing his point totals and contract bargaining position. Mark Scheifele, every move you make, every check you fake...

Good on you for re-evaluating your stance. Not a popular thing to do in these parts.

That said, let's wait until we hit a skid before we really know what kind of dynamic is going on with this team. Winning fixes almost everything while losing magnifies all the little cracks and flaws

Just figured this thread needs a bump, given Mark Wheeler's start to the season. 5g, creating a ton, working incredibly hard and doing what he can on D -- and still capable of taking over shifts, as he did against STL and again last night with that apparently slo-mo breakaway beauty.

He's never challenging for a Selke, but can't think of a play he's given up on in any zone, and he's still trending to hit or surpass his usual PPG pace while driving an awkward line that's missing one of the league's best zone-entry machines and play drivers.

Chapeau à Marc, for what looks like a rejuvenated game.

i don't think there was ever much concern about scheifele's offensive game. he'll produce as a top-6er/pp1player with strong wingers. i do think there's a bit more of an individual effort defensively, although overall this team is still rating quite poor in their own zone.

I personally don't look at any advanced metrics tell game 20. Aggregate numbers are still subject to wild swings due to single game great or poor performances.

Scheifele is looking like a different player this year, and is giving a strong effort on both ends of the ice. A far cry from the player we saw last year; he looks completely rejuvenated. Certainly playing like one of the top centres in the game again.

Not sure what the deal last year was, and/or if Bowness is responsible for getting Scheif back on track, but it’s nice to have this Scheifele again. I’m glad we didn’t trade him.

I think he was the poster boy for "the message was no longer being received" so its time to move on from the coach.

He seems ro be back having fun and is rejuvenated with a new voice behind the bench. It's good to see.

It's because the Dude talked to Scheifele at a golf tournament this summer. :naughty: This is the #1 center i remember from a few years ago , i just think Maurice was here too long and a few players got too comfortable, Scheifele being 1 of them. All i know is i love watching him play again and he seems to be having fun again.

I seem to be repeating himself again but is it ever fantastic to see 55 playing like his 2017-18 playoff self in the regular season. He's opening up chances with his play in all three zones and creating on a level we haven't seen in years -- it's great to see.

Along with Helle and Nik arguably most the influential Jet when he's gone, a player who can turn a game on its head -- as we've seen a few times already this year.

And yeah, he's having some fun.

I suspect he had been unhappy under the previous regime for a while.

scheifele has been great to start to the year. this is just my view/feeling, but in from '16-'18 there was just a buzz when scheif was on the ice, he was creating a high quality scoring chance for us. some of that was gone for me from 19-'21 but i think that's starting to come back. i think defensively he's been ok. he seems to be trying at least which is better than years past. i dont think he will ever be stout defensively which is fine, but if he's around average that's helluva lot better than a liability.

This is why I was supporting 55 last season when many were saying 80 was going to supplant him as 1C. PLD isn't even close. The elite players in the league make putting up points look easy. Scheifele even in the past season when it looked like he was barely trying would end the night with 2 points. When you watch Kucherov, he looks just makes putting up points look easy where PLD is more like a guy like Ladd used to be or someone like Gallagher who are out there scratching and clawing for every single point and still end up with only 55-60 points at the end of the season.

If Connor and Appleton were scoring he'd be at 2PPG pace. The guys is basically singlehandedly doing all the scoring on his line. His offensive talent is beyond questioning.

I will say as a V young player: PLD was tracking pretty strongly in CBJ as a future sure fire 1C. But idk seem like his cap is 60ish pts and unless you're bringing in selke level 2-way play, that's not enough. He's more of the low end 1C-high end 2C border I'd say. Which is I think where he was categorized in CBJ. I don't think we've seen the growth in his production to comfortably usurp scheifele.

He's had elite linemates, used in pp1, and I don't think overall ice time has ever been an issue. I do agree some players just have innate ability to score, your kucherov example is dead on too. Used to joke around saying imagine how much he'd score if he tried lol.

I have to eat crow and agree with you. I thought Scheif was expendable and needed a change of scenery. He is lights out this year and it appears Coach Momo and his crew were the issue.I thought PLD could be the next Patrice Bergeron or Ryan o'Reilly but he may just end up being a top 15 c2 , which would not be bad. If he stayed. The only issue I now have with Scheif is that he pouted his way through last season. It does not show great character but working for a boss you cannot stand does do strange things to a person.

100% that’s how I feel and felt about Schiefele as well.
PLD is still valuable, he’s a completely different skill set.

Mark is playing well & even seems to be enjoying it.

Mark is having a great year. It starts with effort and consistency, and being accountable to all of your teammates. Thank you Rick Bowness. And thank you Paul, for firing yourself.
all true!
Hope Paul finds success in Florida
